Wolo Air Horn

Looking for your experiences with the Wolo Bad Boy air horn.
I have personally had a quick failure with a Stebel and have read where too many others have also had "premature" failures with a Stebel so am looking to replace with a Wolo if it has a better track record.

I have a wolo on my bike.  It is giving me problems now, but it has been installed for about 7 years now.   One of the tones/horns is not working.   

Junky thing doesn't want to work because it has been under water, full of grasshoppers and dirt.  I can't imagine why they can't build a better product!   

I will replace it with one just like it if I can't fix it.

Is there a difference between the Stebel and the Wolo?

About 60 dollars.  Stebel is the high priced one.  Not much otherwise.   Hoser

So are you saying the two horns are one and the same? Just marketed by two different companies?

You can get the Wolo at Harbor Freight.  It's cheaper, like everything else at Harbor Freight.  Made in China.  The Stiebel is made in Italy, I think.  The Wolo appears to be a knock off of the Stiebel.

What I should have said was, "Is there really a difference between the Stebel and the Wolo?"  My understanding, like Hoser's and RainMaker's, is that they are very similar, if not the same.  Considering I went through 2 Stebels in 2 years, if I had to choose one over the other it would be based on price. 

I wound up choosing the BigBF Quad Horn setup and recommend it highly.

I have a Wolo and mounted it up high by the gas shutoff valve and have had not issues in two + years.

My chrome wolo, had it for several years, it's protected here from road grime and such.  Got rid of the pos oem petcock, and replaced it with a pingle to make room.  Hoser

Been having my Stebel  mounted on my lift adapter for almost a couple of years now.. No worries.

Checked out Harbor Freight in Irving . They do have the plain Wolo for $39.95 but I would want chrome.
Found one on Amazon for $56 including tax and shipping.

I think my chrome tranny cover is in the way for mounting here.

If I get a Wolo, maybe I'll be able to clean out the Stebel and have a spare if that was the problem.

Don't know what happened to my Stebel but I checked it by wiring directly to battery and it worked fine so that left only a wiring problem as the cause of horn not working.
I then hooked up my old factory horn and it worked so wiring must be OK.
I then re-hooked my Stebel and I'll be darned if it doesn't work. Why it quit I guess I'll never know.
I had already purchased a new Wolo so I now have a spare.

Not my permanent lift adapter, but I'm not sure about finagling one of the wooden or Spoonland adapters in there.  Not saying it won't work - just that I haven't tried it.

You're probably tired of reading about my off and on air horn problem but I am still stumped.
Horn was back working fine in my garage.
I was out last night on bike on way home and tried horn. Nothing. Hit button several times and one last time after I shut down in garage. Dead.
This morning I tried it and it is honking again sitting in garage.
I will try to get the bike inspected, hopefully, before it quits again.

When you say nothing, you don't hear anything at all?  Any relays clicking, or any noise at all from the horn?  Kinda sounds like a bad connection somewhere.

Yea, that's what it sounds like to me. The relay always clicks.
Since it has decided to honk this morning, I crawled on her and eased up to a close by inspection station to see if I could get a new sticker and when he asked me to honk my horn, it decided to oblige.
If I have future problems, I may have to get some help at next wrench party.

The Wolo seems to be too #$%@! fragile in my experience with a sample size of one.  Nice and loud, but the darned thing decided to quit one fine day: sounded like someone trying to strangle a goose.  Checked the tech forums, and one guy resurrected his dead horn by dumping a bunch of air tool oil in the pump inlet, then running the horn until it turned freely.  Dunno about the Stebel, but the Wolo bearings are sh*t.  The oil helped with that issue, but I think most of the black gook that blew out the pump outlet (you definitely want to remove the plastic trumpet / horn shell first) was a disintegrating impeller (the attached rubber flaps that move the air).  Anyway, after reassembling everything, the horn worked for about another two months before the goose strangler returned.  I repeated the Frankenstein procedure, but took the disassembly several steps deeper because I noticed things not quite lining up properly, i.e., the bent tabs that hold the air pump assembly to the pump motor weren't bent far enough to keep the pump from going off-axis relative to the motor.  Seemed to help, but I didn't wait for the horn to quit again: bought a $9.95 ah-oooga horn from Harbor Freight  .  Gets people's attention, because they can't immediately locate where the unexpected sound is coming from.

Got the them installed this evening.  I kept them in the factory position, pointed down.  Probably a 15 minute install.  Other than blowing a fuse, it went smoothly.  They are a LOT louder than the factory horn.
