Yep,  that's right changing out the OEM tires.  I put a couple of thousand miles on them, my girl now has 10,850 miles. I figured I pushed my luck hard enough but I wanted to check her out well as she has obviously sat motionless most of her life.  The PO had the fuel system and carbs refurbished and the bike runs and drives like new.

I've been through some scary movies, scary camp fire stories and scary things going bump in the night but none of that... NONE of it, terrifies me nearly as much as thinking about riding on 10 year + old OEM Dunlops...  :o

That reminds me.

In 1999 I bought this 1973 CB175.  It didnt run but it was in like new condition.  Once I got it running and it wasnt hard, I rode it.  Then I started thinking, these are 26 year old factory Yokohama tires......

I changed them with only 1,000 miles on them...I figured they were due

Bought my 99I/S almost 5 yrs ago with 924 miles on it.  Checked out the origonal tires and proceeded to take her home, 385 miles down the interstate hwy at 80 mph.  Sure was surprised to find a strip of cord showing on the front tire that was about 1"X10" right in the center.  I know that it looked good when I left.  I am now positive that my guardian angel can fly 80+mph...Jim :crazy2:

I had a similar situation.  I bought my '97 Standard 2 years ago from a dealer.  It had 7,600 miles on it.  I rode the OEM tires until 11K miles and found a local guy with a set of Metzlers that he had installed, ridden 100 miles and didn't like 'em.  He went to Avon.

I LOVED the difference the Metzlers made!  Of course the OEM's were old, but looked great when I bought her.

           " 10 year + old OEM Dunlops...    :o "
sounds like a good set of tires to me ...
you can't beat what works ...
the new dunlops e3's are not the same tire as the oem tires ...
much better tire  and will get twice  the mileage  with proper inflation
do ... dump the ome valve stems           :cooldude:

I have a set of OEM Dunlops with less than 300 miles on them. I'd gladly donate them but you'd need to pay the $185.00 shipping charge. And I'll throw in a new set of "PatchBoy" chrome valve stems.

I have a red and white 1971 cb175 with the original tires on it at 7k on the clock... they are well past needing changed, but she does not see much road anymore.

I have a small cargo trailer that I bought maybe 8 years ago that I tow behind my car.  I think the trailer was built in 1973 and it wouldn't surprise me if the tires are original.  They are tubeless, 4.8 x 8, and don't have a load rating or PSI indicated on the side.  Shortly after I bought the trailer I bought a new rim and tire and mounted it to the tongue as a spare.  I just got back from a two week camping trip in BC which put about 2000-3000 km on the trailer, without problems.  I was considering replacing the tires before the trip, but simply ran out of time with everything else I had on my to-do list.  I think I'll replace the tires before my next big trip, just because I know I've pushed my luck with these tires.  It probably helps that the trailer is small enough that many of you would probably say you could tow it behind your Valkyries.  Fully loaded with camping gear, the weight on the axle was 640 pounds as measured at a truck scale.

Wow those tires are hard. I could see the weather checking so I should have known.  Left a couple of small marks on the rim getting the rear tire off the rim.  You will not see them but I know they are there.   :tickedoff: Seriously considered a car tire on the rear. Just because it looks cool, but not enough time to properly research and I want to ride a bike with this mod. I will look for volunteers at some point.  I ordered new valve stems, moly lube, o rings and hypoid gear oil.  I am down to avons or bridgestone tires.  I like the exedra g850 and g701 total price delivered $306.+-.

I would have trailered that bike with those tires.

In 1997 I flew out to California and took my Dad's 1984 Honda Magna away from him the week before his 80th birthday.  (He bought the bike new).  It had less than 8,000 miles on it and still had the original tires.  I rode it all the way back to Texas on those OEM's and more than half of it on US-50 (the Loneliest Highway in America).  Never had a problem.  I did replace the tires when I got back home.

I am pushing my luck on 6 year old tires on my 2008 honda scooter.  The tread is o.k. depth wise at 8700 miles on the scoot but are OEM tires made by Kenda and are 16" in size so not cheap to replace about 85 bucks each.  The sidewalls look fine but inside the treads you can see small creases/cracks all over.  Probably should consider replacing them.

My old dunlops 2nd set were about 6 years old but only had about 6,000 miles on them from previous owner and I road it one year before replacing.  Had some tread left could probably go another 3,000 miles but they were hard as a brick over bumps in the road so replaced 2nd season owned the I/S.
