Brought home a new Springfield Armory 1911 Range Officer to add to my collection.  It is advertised as having the same quality as trophy match models without all the extras (and the cost).  Easily upgradable, but for my needs on the range I'm sure it will do as is!

Nice find :cooldude: I looked for one of those for over a year but never could find one, even online. I ended up buying a Ruger 1911. Haven't fired it yet, so nuthin' to report.

I snatched it up from Buds Gun Shop and it was the only one they had.  I must have gotten lucky.  I had a Mil-spec on reserve since February and got tired of waiting for it.  Glad I switched, this is better quality!

It wasn't cheap, $899  :-[,  but I already paid $700 to put the Mil-spec on reserve so it really only cost me $200  ;D

Excellent choice.   :cooldude:

It's amazing that John Browning's design just keeps on chugging.  Years ago, a 1911 needed custom work by a good smith to attain both accuracy and reliability; now with CNC and other tech, they come nearly perfect right out of the box.

Crappy thing is, even at today's higher gun prices, now ammo becomes the most expensive part of shooting (over time).  And where I live, ranges aren't cheap or plentiful either.

I have a Browning High Power as well, 1970's vintage.  Browning was well ahead of his time.

Great minds think alike.  I got two BHPs, a nice blue Belgian, and my favorite, an older parts gun with a Canadian Ingles frame (with the wood buttstock cutout in the backstrap... no buttstock), mated with an Argentine contract slide (w. lousy tiny sights) parkerized.  It is beat up and pitted some, but just shoots anything I run in it without a hickup.  Was my travel gun for many years since it is very reliable, but not a lot of money in it if it was stolen, taken for evidence or had to disappear.

If you don't know, removing the magazine disconnect is easy and gives a much nicer trigger pull.  Some say this could cause you trouble in litigation, don't listen to them.

I'm a single action auto fan.

Similar to this.

I wonder if they can't afford the ammo anymore, or are just trying to cash in on the higher prices?

Not selling mine.

Those are nice for a small caliber (and smaller bullet) handgun  :D

That is a nice pistol.  We think that every hard working, God fearing, tax paying, law abiding (pick any three) American should own at least copy of Mr. Browning's 1911A1.  It should be law.

We trudge on.

Notice they did not show the targets for the .50 and .45 rapid fire.

Here's one I really want (face to face in VA), but I'm resisting the temptation..... so far.

Notice we have our own gun trader site in VA, besides Armslist.

Really, a 2.5" .44 would only be marginally fun to shoot, very much.  5-7.5" bbl is much more realistic for the caliber.

While I am a big Smith fan, the Ruger Redhawk is a fine .44.  With a 2X Leupold it is a formidable hand cannon.

Rapid fire on the .500 is a no go.  The key is hit on the first round, I promise, whatever it is aint gettin up!

I'm certain of that.   :cooldude:  (put one finger in ear.... LOL)

The S&W 500 is actually known to go full auto for a 2 round burst, this happened to my dad. The recoil is so intense it can actually compress into your hand, reset the double action trigger, and bounce forward firing the second round. When my dad shot my 500 he didn't believe he'd shot it twice it happened so fast until I opened the cylinder and showed him the 2 spent casings.

Okay, one more video, slow motion of a S&W 500 being fired:

Very nice.   I am impressed with how Springfield comes complete like that.  They do it right, include the holster, mag holster and such..... the standard which all others should follow.   I don't own a Springfield, but have considered one over the years.

Nice addition.....

$899 is not bad at all. My USP's each go for about that much and while the quality and reliability are on par with the best 1911's (justifying the price) they have poly frames so the 1911 is far more intensive in production techniques and materials. I'd say $899 is a good deal actually.

What is really happening with this is that during the recoil the spring for the cylinder stop is getting compressed enough to allow the cylinder to rotate freely.  Since its a momentary compression the spring rebounds and the cylinder stop catches on the next round.  Then if you are slow to release the  trigger you can assist the gun to rapid fire that second round.

This was happening to mine, I sent it back to Smith and Wesson and they replaced the cylinder stop spring with a heftier one.  No more troubles.

Once you learn how to control the recoil this really is not an unpleasant gun to shoot.  Just dont get a thumb out next to the forcing cone...you will lose it.

My Super Blackhawk .44mag hogleg has been a favorite since I got it around 35 years ago.  Had it accurized, handloaded hunting and target loads for it, qualified for my NRA certification a perfect round of fire, which the instructor had claimed, had never happened before.  I used my Elmer Keith wadcutter competition handloads.  I made him sign the target.  Now he can't say that anymore w/o lying.  I bet he does anyway - if he's still with us, which I doubt.  He was around 70 then and that was 20 years ago and didn't look healthy.  (He had said his 1911 was gas operated, no one called him on it.  I said, neat piece, must be really valuable, my 1911's are recoil. What a blowhard.)  He asked what the hell I was doing in his class - I said I need the certification for my CCW, if they ever legalize it.  Which they did 9 years later.  He was going to require everyone to fire their handgun dbl action for the certification.  No wonder no one had a perfect target.  So I picked a single action for the class.   There were 3 guys in the class who were getting training that was required by their employer, as security guards.  Didn't know which was the business end of the Security Six .357/.38 they were sharing for the class - and presumably for their job, with 3 shifts.  Wow.  I'll bet any perps shake in their boots when they see what they're up against.  Mr Blowhard was slobbering all over their targets when they somehow got on the black of their FBI targets with 10 inch groups at 25 ft.  But not a word for me with 10 rounds in one hole, 10x.  So I started shooting smiley faces on the targets.  He yelled at me, threatened to throw me out of the class.  Ahole.

I have lusted after a 500S&W, though I don't have a use for it.  Just something for the collection, I suppose.  Way too big to carry, and if you actually use it on a perp, God help you in court.  Great for hunting, but the Super Blackhawk can take anything on the continent with the right loads.  I've even seen claims it will work for cape buffalo and elephant.  I'd have to think that's a stretch.  (Not that such big game hunting is PC anymore - I'm not expecting to do that anyway.)  Nice toy for the range, bragging rights, blowing up water bottles and the like.  A little spendy for a toy, but that wouldn't be the first time.  Shhhh, don't tell the wife.  She might remember the safe combination and look in there.

Really like the .45acp's and BHP 9mm's.  Not gonna list them here.  Though I'm sure I'm on NSA lists already.  Besides they fell overboard when I was crossing Lake Michigan in a rowboat and a big wave turned us over.

I hate to break it to you Mark, but gas-op 1911's do exist. It's a conversion that is still pretty rare but gaining popularity among competition shooters who compete in unlimited categories.

And if it was a defensive handgun course you SHOULD have to fire it DA. In a defensive situation you are not going to stop and rooster the hammer.
