Where do I get one? and how does it mount? Does it bolt down to the fender under the seat?

Denny47

The ones I have seen on ebay bolt to the fender under the pass. seat. Utopia makes a backrest for the Valk and they are probably the best but also more expensive, last time that I checked they were around $175-$200

Utopia is great, and be sure you do NOT remove the rear passenger seat if you use one...

(The rear seat acts as a brace, otherwise all the forces are transferred right into a section of your rear fender that weren't designed to take such forces and it will crumple. Thanks again Daniel for your help on that creative solution!)

If you can still get a Utopia you can't go wrong even if it is 175 or 200.  definitely the best out there

There are past posts on the Utopia backrest on this forum. Go to the search box at center right at top of this page and search.

I have a Utopia back rest on my I/S. If I upgrade to a different make(I have a stock seat)it WILL have a backrest.  :cooldude: One of those things that after you get used to it you DO NOT want to go with out one.   ;) RIDE SAFE.

I wonder about this... would it work to use a curved fender rack instead of a back seat to
act as the brace?... Even if it worked, it would probably look bad... could you hide the bad
with a leather fender bib?

If the bad you're talking about is the collapsed fender, it wasn't just cosmetic. When mine went out I was accelerating hard and next thing I knew I was looking straight up at the sky. The back rest had collapsed the fender badly enough that it bent the fender inwards and the backrest was nearly parallel to the fender.

And another note about Utopia - After nearly 100,000 miles of the Utopia backrest having my 300+ pound carcass slamming into it regularly, the upright bar of the backrest itself bent one day.

I sent Utopia an e-mail requesting information on purchasing a replacement (Since it'd been 10 years and a LOT of abuse I wasn't expecting a warranty replacement) but they insisted on replacing the broken part completely free (They even paid shipping). They earned a LOT of respect from me with that simple thing.

No, not that bad... I figured that since the rear seat acts as a structural brace that maybe a curved fender
rack would too, but that the rack wouldn't hide the "bad/ugly" part of the Utopia that goes under the seat...
If a rack would serve as the structural brace, would a leather fender bib serve to hide the part of the Utopia that
normally would be hidden under the passenger seat?

Ah gotcha... The support bar of the Utopia backrest hugs the back of the seat pretty well. This was with a Hartco Custom not an OEM seat, but pretty close. I found an old pic that kinda shows what it looked like with no passenger seat (The red thingies on the backrest were an experiment I was doing with extra brake lights. Getting rear ended by a semi makes one get a little OCD about things like brake lights... ;) )

cool... there's nothing really to hide. Hopefully there's someone who has used a fender rack
in place of the passenger seat along with a Utopia, seems like it would serve the same structural function...

If you get a Russell seat, it is probably best to have it built on a OEM seat pan, and
Utopia is probably the best way to get a backrest if you're using an OEM seat.

You mean like this?  It works just fine  :cooldude:  Although I have an Ultimate seat.  It should work the same with OEM.
