Gear oil filler cap

I just changed out the fluids today. Been awhile since my last Valk and I thought the filler cap screwed in? But mine just pulled off and I didn't see any O ring unless it was still in the fill hole side? Is this the fill plug I should have? I re filled the gear oil and just lightly tapped the plug back down in the hole?

Looks like someone may have stripped the threads and replaced the cap with something fishy.  I have two valks and the cap screws in.

Are you talking about the filler cap on the engine or on the rear end?  Either way, they are either not stock or stripped.

I have a feeling that you think the vent is the fill plug. The vent does just pull out and can be used for for filling, but, thats not what its there for. I'm surprised you got it out, thats good, many folks break it.

Are you talking about the filler on the final drive, the "pumpkin"? If it is chrome and on top it is the vent, the fillcap is behind the exhaust pipe on  the side of the pumpkin.  If you filled it to the top through the vent, it is overfilled.  Got a picture?  Hoser  ???

Cleaner, both the drain and fill holes are on the side of the final drive. The drain is the lower one for obvious reasons, the fill is a bit higher and to the rear of the axle. As stated, if you pulled one off and tapped it back in...you were messing with the vent hole, not the fill hole.

#2 is the filler; #5 is the vent.

I always fill mine through the vent. Broke it last time and ordered 2 so ill have a spare. Easier to fill through the vent hole anyway.

Yep I filled thru the vent Well I drained it real good and it took all 5.1 ounces. I thought it went in real slow but it went...lol. I even took the hard bag off so I didn't have to struggle...lol

Am I good or do I have to re-do it again? It all goes into the same place right?

This is my 4th Valk and I always have done all my own maintenance. I can't believe I made that rookie mistake. As I was doing it something just didn't seem kosher, oh well that wont happen again.

If the vent cap just pulls straight up to take it off, how do many folks end up breaking it?

Don't know. Maybe They don't realize it is just pushed/pressed in and try to force it. Some folks are pretty heavy handed.

I actually put a piece of rubber around my channel locks and carefully tried to unscrew it but it came right off. That's when I realized something was wrong, because there were no threads?

But stupid me...instead of looking further, I seen a hole and filled it

i just worked on one the guy did that, filled it all the way up and rode it 3,000 miles !

took $400.00 worth of quarters to clean up the mess at the car wash !!

Well, there are easy ways and hard ways to learn how to work on these things.  I guess some people are destined to learn the hard way.  Like the chap a couple years ago that drained his oil for an oil change through the oil filter hole (once the filter is removed) Dont ask me, I cant imagine, but it did happen.

Removing the vent is so un-necessary, but I understand to service the final drive while its on the bike, the vent is a more accessible site.  The real answer is two parts.  1.  Use synthetic hypoid gear oil so it can last 10-20K miles.  2.  Change the oil while the final drive is OFF the bike during a tire change and while you are cleaning and regreasing the drive and drive shaft splines
