My riding season ended early.

On Sunday August 25th, me & the phat lady did cartwheels together.

Hit some shoulder gravel, started to slide when the front wheel grabbed and snapped to the left.
Me and 99IS when flying.

I had a very dramatic day after that. It was a little like being in the middle of my own medical ER show. I was airlifted from the roadside to Vancouver General Hospital.

Long story short, I was very lucky. No back or head damage.
I do have multiple fractures in my left arm an hand.
As well as a lot of Black & Blue.
My daughter asked if this is what is meant by 'wearing your colors?'

I'm home now with the best family anyone could hope for.

Ouch, sounds really painful, heal up, it will for sure take more time guessing than you would like though.

Was the gravel on the shoulder of the road going to fast or was it like I see almost everyday going around corners where there is gravel sprayed all over the road in my lane while turning at hwy. speeds?  I sure hate those big gravel or even little gravel spots that throw the front tire into a quick slide but luckily the front hooks up fairly quickly with the gravel in the road itself not for very long stretches luckily so far. 

I take my corners on rural hwy. roads probably slower than most simply because of that reason - gravel actually ON the roads not on the right shoulder where it belongs.

Yes I will be taking the Doc's advice to heart. I start with the surgical follow-up this week.

I have hardware built-in now (plates & screws).
The Doc says the scares become like an ID badge at airports.
You show them first before the machine screams at you.

As far as what happened goes, I need to wait a little.
I am watching the Insurance company process at the moment.
The insurance company has not inspected the bike yet. It was well out of town and had to be towed back to Vancouver. They just got it last friday.

The Policeman said it happens with regularity in that section of road, but it is usually cars that end up off the road.

I'll share what I think happened once I hear what the insurance company has to say.

Again, I appreciate everyone's thoughts prayers and wishes.

The other good news was I was wearing a very heavy leather jacket, leather chaps , steel toed boots and full gauntlet style gloves (bad ass biker look, except for the full face helmet) 

The fire dept guys who got me on a backboard at the accident said I had gone some distance down the road from where I left the bike.

We have tons of gravel roads in this area and lots of rednecks that like to spin their tires where the gravel meets the road this has lead to many scarry situations and a couple of barely saved moments. This is also why I no longer power into corners.

Fortunately I was alone.
The extra helmet was in my trunk.

Having all the leather allowed me to keep my skin.
I have some bad bruising and a few abrasions, but my chaps and jacket are fairly chewed up.
A very good investment!

I got confirmation today that My baby has been written off.



The good news is that I had over insured her for 15K, plus gear.
Sounds like I'm going to see about $17,500 after the dust settles.


I also got a CD from the hospital with images of the new hardware.



Based on the pains I've been feeling, I don't think the holes were pre drilled  


To answer an earlier question about what happened......
I was in a hurry and was riding beyond my skill level.
(I was having good fun up till that moment)

Not sure what is next. I've stopped with the pain killers, they made me sick. I rather put up with the pain than the nausea. The pain killers did not handle the shooting pains anyway.

I have been finding that I have little bits of cartilage floating in my knees and right elbow. Not sure what will happen with that going forward. I keep hearing how lucky I was/am. Sure am feeling older just now.

I think I'll wait till next spring to decide on what and when I'll ride next. The arm and hand won't be ready till Christmas anyway.

I have been feeling very grateful for family and friends. Everyone has been wonderful.

Sorry to hear of your mishap, you're a lucky man to be telling the story.  Hope the healing process is 100% successful and with minimal pain.  Too much of this going on folks, we need to be careful.  Good testiment for ATGATT.

totally agree with too much of this bad stuff going on.  It seems like near daily locally you hear of a cycle getting hit or running off the road for whatever reason. 

15-17.5K great deal I wouldn't sweat it as far as replacement.  Even with those nice Mark T, I believe?, organ pipes that are so nice looking, you can buy nearly 2 Valk interstates to replace the one you left behind.  Wait till spring to decide and that will give you something to do over the long winter months - go shopping for a new ride!

Happy to hear that you are alive and on the mend.
I like the fact that these kind of ride reports are here for one reason and one only. So that we all are reminded to ride to the best of our ability and never let our guard down, not even for a second.
Heal up and stay on the board over the winter.......how else are we Floridians going to get pictures of snow!!
