I/S and reserve, has anyone with a I/S ever ran totally through reserve and if so how many miles did you go in reserve before the tank went dry???

Grandpot

When I go to reserve, I have exactly 1 gallon left in the tank.  I measured this in a bucket last winter while doing annual maintenance.
:crazy2: Experience is recognizing the same mistake every time you make it.:crazy2:

No, but when I have to turn to reserve I figure I have 30-35 miles left and slow to the speed limit and at 25 miles I will pull over to check for closest gas no matter what direction.  I have been to 29 miles on reserve and have never put more than 5.8 gallons in the bike.  That 1 gallon number sounds pretty close to correct for me.

2001 i/S......Last Sunday at 157 miles the reserve icon was flashing, at 167 miles had to switch to reserve on the petcock.  Slowed down and at 203 miles hit a station.....took 6.77 gallons in a 6.8 gallon tank.    Figured I had 4 ounces of fuel left before fill up....

Stock configuration I thought was just about exactly a gallon as mentioned. Although I thought the total tank capacity was just about 6.9ish? I know we are talking at most ounces but 1 ounce of fuel will get you a bit farther than 0 ounce's will.

Don't worry about it too much just install the belly tank and extend your main tank 90+miles. Pricy but worth the cost and effort.
After the belly tank install your reserve volume is cut in about half without modifying the petcock pick tube but when my fuel gauge starts flashing I just start looking for fuel station and I know I still have at least 3+ gallons for safety... Plus the couple other benefits of the belly tank like a fuel pump and filters.
I have installed 3 so far and no big issues, one I had to modify the tank a bit for exhaust clearance installing on a bike with exhaust that had never been tested by belly tank maker. A big rubber hammer fixed that issue,,, right Mike4Sho.

At about 200 miles just past reserve, I was always looking to get off the bike even for the 5 minutes to refuel.

I figured, I could go another 50 miles to empty after switching to reserve, based upon the MPG I got before reserve. IS tank is rated at 6.9 gals.

It used to be a gallon but I dont know how much now after the pinglel fuel valve. When I get to a quarter tank I start looking for gas. Where do you go to get the added tank? Would like to extend the range on the fat girl for two up traveling.

My pinglel  valve has a 2 1/2 quart reserve and I have put 7.055 gallons in the  tank, engine was sputtering when I pulled in the station, bike on the kick stand, filled to the top of the neck.

For the most part I have physical limits more than bike fuel volume, I need to stop and move around after about 150-200 miles most of the time the very few long rides I have taken. But those are 2-up and pushing the throttle well past 3,500rpm so my fuel mileage is usually low compared to most especially the Victory and Harley guys I ride with they get in the 50ish mpg or so.

That RMWORKSINC belly tank is one hell of a good product,,, but that's my opinion and we all know that joke.

I just dont like filling every other day when commuting even if it just makes it every 3rd day that is fine with me. Plus I'm planning a Montana trip in the late spring and have every thing covered except I want more fuel on board that isnt taking up luggage space.

Well then the R&M belly tank is a viable option or you.
It will put you right at 9.9+ gallons onboard fuel capacity and takes up no previously used space.
I am not sure it makes enough difference to notice but the fuel is used from the main stock tank first so this gives you a 3 gallon (not sure of the actual total weight) weight below centerline thus potentially lowering your center of gravity.... and possibly better handling.

I would make a great salesman for these tanks,,, sure wish I would have been the one that thought of them first.  I drive right at 30miles each way to work so I can in theory get about 300 miles (I don't)with that much fuel but I don't ever use up the fuel down that far. I get about 3 days from a fillup. I see the low level start flashing on the display and I start paying attention where I am and go get some fuel at my next best location. I like to leave enough fuel in the system to get to work at least once at any given moment just incase the truck fails me.

Yep  :cooldude:  the best investment was the belly tank. I can easily go 200 miles without stopping.  It's great.  That rubber hammer seemed to work.  Although I will say I was afraid the belly tank was going to blow up since it was so close to the exhaust.  Not anymore!
