From a Aussie viewpoint it is hard to comprehend what is going on in the USA now with Government shutdown because there isn't a resolution of the budget so people can get paid.
Is it just the Politicians playing games & flexing their muscles & stuff everyone else.
What's it got to do with Obama care ?.
I thought Obama care was law & being implemented.
So the opposition ? doesn't like it but it was bought in by the Government elected by the people.
To say now if you don't change it we wont support the budget resolution unless you do it our way.
What would be their next thing to object to.
It just sounds like old fashion blackmail.
But then I am from a country that has a different system based on the Westminster system that came from England.
May be old fashioned but most of the time it works.
Maybe someone could explain.
All this is reflecting badly on the USA around the world.

Not going to try to explain the situation, not sure I fully understand everything that's going on either. But I would like to ask why, from your point of view, that it makes the USA look bad?

blastedbugler

The wrangling makes the USA look like it's internal politics are out of control.
The free world looks at the USA for stability & this is the message that is not being sent out.
Seems to be " Do it my way or else ".
Reading the forums there seems to be a lot of bad vibes towards the President & what he is trying ? to do.
I don't know how the citizens react to their politicians in the USA.
In Aussie politicians are elected to do the job that they promoted to get elected.
Every 3 years we tell them whether they have done that job.
Much more casual here & the Prime Minister could be just another person in the street.
Just after he was elected Tony Abbott went bike riding with friends.
Security not visible ( would probably be there in their riding leotards ), or needed.

Unlike most parliamentary systems the US elects an independent chief executive.  Imagine if your prime minister had to come from the minority party and he had to approve all legislation.  That's it in a nutshell. I know the executive power in Australia is a little more nuanced than that.

In reality we have two sides who have backed themselves into a corner talking about things they won't do, agree to, or negotiate about.  Now they just want to blame each other and try to convince the most people that it's not their fault.

As a libertarian I do love divided government because they will usually agree on important stuff and we will not be subjected to all of their "good ideas".

understand your concerns.  I am embarrassed for our country.  a few radicals with no concern for either our future or the world economy.   I apologize for the dysfunction.  I also hope it does not affect your country though if debt ceiling is not resolved I am sure it will.

The legislative process that gave us the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, was an incredibly volatile process. The Congress with a Democrat majority in both houses of government, passed this legislation with out a single Republican vote. Having the Majority at the time, the Democrats pushed this through with uncommon limits on debate and restrictions on the legislative process. Well within the prescribed powers, but still unusually partisan.

Even so, the Congressional vote was split and reflective of the country's view. This wasn't a slam dunk. The country was and is still very much split on the concept.

The President signed it into law.

A case was brought before the Supreme Court.

A controversial ruling was the result.
Though, in the end, it was found to be Constitutional, the vote was 5-4. Again, not a slam dunk and while the ruling is definitive, against the controversies, in many quarters, remains suspect.

As we run up to the current events, flaws, problems, and issues begin to plague the implementation of the Affordable Care Act.

Institutions like the Labor Unions, a bastion of support for the Democrat Party, begin to demand changes in the law.

As a result the President has issued Executive Orders delaying aspects of the law's implementation, particularly as it relates to mandates for businesses which have been now delayed by a year.

There is no question that the Republican Party and affiliates wish to torpedo this law in it's entirety.

One reason for the desire to undo this is the fact that, historically, in this country, a government program once started can never be undone, so the Republicans are willing to take this to extraordinary ends because they believe that the law and what it attempts is just unworkable and counter productive by factors of magnitude they cannot accept.

At the present time the House offer on the table, or was on it, was that the budget would include these provisions:

1. Language that would require Congress and staff to use the provisions in the Affordable Care Act. It would strip out the language in the Act that would exempt Congress from it.

2. Language that would delay the individual mandate provisions for a year. Like the delay President Obama afforded the business community.

I believe these provisions have been rejected by the Democrat led Senate and the President.

While there are differences in what should be changed in this law, it is clear, changes need to be made before this should go forward as what was advertised is not happening.

The President and most Democrats believe this can be done on the run.

The Republicans believe otherwise.

I think I understand, but then maybe I am not sure or if I thought I did I am now sure I dont.
At least we can all laugh at ourselves.

In Aussie public hospitals & Doctors are free ( generally ).
If you want higher standard of private service you take out you own insurance ( some do some don't ).
My privates insurance covers me for remedial ( yes remedial ) massage, dentist, eye glasses etc.
There are many private insurers & you just pick the one that gives you best coverage for your own medical problem.

it was 'do it my way or else' that lead us to this place. obamacare was passed through both houses and signed by the prez without a single repub voting for it. the more people that check this turd out and see their premiums tripling and their deductibles skyrocking are going to be against it.

our government has a major spending problem and simply handing them the reins and saying "do what you think is best" will lead to a complete FUBAR in most folks view.

Free?????

The citizens of Australia DON'T contribute anything to your national health system (Medicare)???

That's the same misperception assumed by some here that Obamacare will be free.

Someone has to pay!!!!!

If the Aussie system is so good why are there private insurances etc available?

good catch, ain't nothing free!  :D and with government involvement in this country "affordable healthcare" is a giant oxymoron.

I think these  articles explain why we don't want O care
Already the theft starts and the lack of controls and spending, not to mention the furthering of Constitutional violations. So who is it that is standing for our way of life now?

IRS Watchdog: $67 Million Missing from Obamacare Slush Fund
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The IRS is unable to account for $67 million spent from a slush fund established for Obamacare implementation, according to a Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) report released today.

I Say, “Shut Down The Government!”

United States Constitution, Article One, Section 7:

“All bills for raising Revenue shall originate in the House of Representatives”

The reason our Founding Fathers wrote that was because the House of Representatives was viewed as the House of the common people.  They knew the people would be closer to their local Representative than to their Senators.

A few days ago, the House of Representatives passed a bill that approved spending for the government to continue – but cut spending for the Affordable Care Act (ObamaCare).

ObamaCare is an expansion of the government powers over the people.
ObamaCare will result in an additional one Trillion Dollars in debt.
The United States is 17 Trillion Dollars in debt!
Our debt is increasing at 1.9 Billion Dollars per day.
Social Security is paying out more than 50 Billion dollars a year than it is taking in, Medicare is deeply in the red, and Medicaid for the poor is in financial trouble.

The House bill that was sent to the Senate may be our only chance to stop the Congress and President from bankrupting America.
"Some people see things that are and ask, Why? Some people dream of things that never were and ask, Why not? Some people have to go to work and don't have time for all that."

It is all just grand-standing by the politicians.  My son-in-law is military and was off for a week and is now told he will be paid for that week and reported back to work this morning.  They certainly aren't doing this "shutdown" to save money.

Yes, I heard that many (not all) of furloughed workers will get their money.  So, we just gave them additional paid vacation.

Also, the money going into printing closure signs, barricading, and policing our open air memorials and parks is costing more than it would to have just kept the open.

Only our gov't could continue to overpay during a shutdown.  And, instead of us ALL rallying together to get the idiots out, 51% of the putrid voter turnout wanted to keep things the same.
