I have been thinking about getting a tank bib. I like the look and I need a place to put the cell phone.
How do they install? Do you have to remove the fuel cap ring? Do they use the front and rear tank mounting bolts?

With regards to your question, Yes on both. I just recently put a bib on and I had to remove the Tank cap ring, and the tank mounting bolts, took a total of 10 minutes to install.
Just be careful with the cap ring screws they can fall into the tank, I was able to unscrew and remount them without them falling, but its easily done.

a good friend of mine loaned me a tank bib to use on a trip out east.  it was actually a nice bib, but I personally don't like 'em.  mainly 'cause no matter how clean you keep it, it will scratch your paint from little grains of sand that get blown up under it.

the one I used tied up front with leather straps, and was bolted to the one bolt under the seat, this raised the front of the seat just enough to make it hard for the seat release latch to release.  I didn't have to do anything to the fuel tank filler, it had an opening around that area.

if you want one, get it, for me I didn't find it useful.  my jackets have plenty of pockets to put things in, plus I usually don't answer my cell phone while riding.  you will leave your phone in that pocket when you get off, trust me.

I got my bib from one of the club sponsors...  'Talisman' ( http://www.saddlebagsbytalisman.com/ ) does great work, and offers many options.  It uses both the front and rear tank mounting bolts, and fits under the gas cap ring, by removing two screws.

Mine is large enough for a pair of sunglasses, a pack of smokes, and a Bersa .380  ;)

I like a tank bib.  I use the pocket for toll tickets and other items to which I might want quick and easy access.  The looks are important to me.  I don't find ant scratching of the tank from a properly made and fitting tank bib.

A good quality bib should be held in place by two screws, one at front and one at back of the tank, and should require you to place it under the gas cap ring for installation.

Be certain to check out one of our vendors, Talisman, who shows up in the rotating ads at the top of the page.

Really like my iron horse tank bib has 2 pockets, one for change and the bigger one for mp3 player and garage door remote but could fit more in top pouch.  Mounts on upper and lower tank bolts with the top having a leather strap that you tie down under the top tank bolt.  Just be careful when re-installing the tank bib to make sure you got the leather strap secured down far enough TIGHT under the top tank bolt.  This spring had the entire tank bib come at me down the hwy. doing 60 mph hit me in the chest, was an eye opener for sure.

No scratches at all and actually paint is less scratched under the bib vs. all around the rest of the tank w/o the bib.  I too was thinking the bibs would wear and chaf the paint but it does not.

I have a Talisman tank bib also.  I have a big check book wallet that I keep in it.

I have a tank bib on MGM, and please don't ask who made it.    I got it 1998 for Christmas from the wife.

I do know it came out of Florida.

It has been so long since it was last off I couldn't tell ya if it rubbed the paint.

This one does not fasten under the gas cap.

Had mine since I brought the Valk home last year. Fits fine, does its job for storage, hasn't scratched any paint underneath, and I still have my cell phone.

You don't need to look any further than Talisman Bibs. He's a VRCC sponsor and his bibs look nice and are of high quality.

Had mine on for about 3 years and it looks as good as when I put it on.

As others have said, 2 screws and it goes under the filler cap as well.
