one day I'll push my luck over a cliff    I pet strange dogs and run with scissors

do yourself a favor, cut that tire in half, across the tread, then look at how much material is left.  with the cords showing the way they are, there's only a thin rubber membrane left, now, do you feel luck punk? do you?

I'm sure some will argue and say that I am in the same boat. Never ran one to the cords but close. Two years ago I had ridden about 20 miles and had noticed that my Valk was hard to turn on curves and at intersections. Discovered that the valve stem was leaking like a sieve and no air in front tire. Was somewhat low looking but went down the hiway fine except on curves. Aired it up and rode another 20 miles home. No problem except on turning. This was on an Elite 3 and the sidewalls are very stout.

Lots of folks' extreme ideas of how to remain safe should limit them to cages rather than two wheeled vehicles.

Yah, once cords/threads start showing, time for a replacement.  Previous bike rear tire showed a few cords and time to put on a some new rubber.

  I really do not understand riding a tire to the limits. I like to change when I hit the wear marks.  could I go another 1000 or 2000 miles and really get down to the limits of the tire, sure I could.  but, for the cost of a new tire, I like good, new tires.  I like the way they handle and I just like being safe and with the best possible equipment I can have.

  I will never ride on tires like the ones shown here.  it surprises me that anyone would.

If you wrap some duct tape around it you should be good for another 1000 miles or so.

you only have two, in the event of a blow out safety goes out the window. I agree you should get your moneys worth out of a tire but don't be reckless.

As I've posted several times, once a tire gets to where you are saying .... well, it's not good, but I can probably get one thousand more miles if I take it easy..... in actuality you probably only have one or two hundred more miles of safe riding.  Once it's near the end, whats left wears incredibly fast.

The last time I did this (OK, this is absolutely my last short ride),  I had to nail it to merge on a really short ramp into 60MPH traffic, the back end let loose (on a motorcycle rear tire), the tire spun and the bike went sideways, I planted my leg to stop a fall, and smacked my calf with the bag guard rail HARD (and it left a mark). 

I think it's a good practice to try and have a new front and rear tire on hand at all times; with two bikes I always do this.  That way when one is close to finished, the replacement is ready to go, no procrastinating on changing it.   As soon as a spare is on the bike, order a new one within a month to fill your supply line. (Right now I have no rear backup, but my 35K car tires are both at about 5-6K).

This tire was on a friend of mine's bike (Yamaha , I believe). He was very lucky as he was riding back to Texas from Florida.

Why would a nearly bald tire let go?

If bald, more surface area contact with the road. No pesky grooves.

That's either bad tire manufaturing or long term bad tire air pressure maintenance.
