I need advice on removing the protective coating and polishing the windshield. The coating is gone in a few places and I don't want to spend lots of cash to replace the shield. I would just buy a sheet of coated lexan  and make a new shield but cannot get the curve in it like the stock shield.

You could try cutting the shield down so you don't have to look through it. I
bought a shorter-than-OEM Clearview just so I wasn't looking through my OEM.

Plus... my OEM shield (bought new in 2007) has many optical imperfections in it... others
have mentioned the same...

Polishing that stuff off the OEM shield is probably pretty hard, people talk about
trying it...

Art, go up to the search box, center page right, enter    polishing windshield     .  Too many posts for me to copy and paste. Good luck.

I didn't bookmark my post, so I will summarize...

I bought a used factory shield that had some coating missing where a for sale sign had been taped to it (found in the sun after installation  >:( ). So I used some clear packing tape on the shield to finish stripping off the coating. Just lay it on good and then rip it off... Gave my shield a good "waxing".

Now the softer layer under the coating will need regular polishing since it scratches very easy, but will hold you over quite a while before you need to replace it.

Cut enough off the top you can easily see over it.

Spray paint the whole wretched thing flat black with some plastic-loving paint.

Put an oval y Ddraig Goch sticker in the middle.

Windshield sorted.
