these CF light bulbs that they say are supposed to last 10,000hrs......they don't.....I've had to replace 3-4 in my 4 socket bathroom vanity and then the one in the ceiling fixture went out today....it's only a year old.....and I know it's not been used all that often......and when it's quiet, you can hear the "buzz/hum" of these CF bulbs.....the old incandescent ones were quiet.......guess it's just another bill of goods we've been sold...... >:( >:( :tickedoff:

The ones I have have lasted fine. My only complaint is that they take a minute to get usefully bright.  Because the incandescent globe light bulbs in my bathroom vanity are very difficult to find, I've been replacing them with halogens. So far I've replaced two of four incandescents with halogens, but I've had to replace both of those halogens since.

Patrick

With the history of some of your posts, I really wasn't sure about this one considering the title.  ;D

I hate florescent bulbs ! With me they don't last either and they don't put out any light even you replace a 60w with equivalent of a 75w. I got rid of them and went with LEDs. They ain't all they are cracked to be either and have had to replace them.
That said, sometimes I've found problems with the light fixture itself and have had to re-crimp and then solder all the connections.

I've had some that last and ones that don't usually the cheap ones crap out early. I just really don't like the light they put out. I also don't like that you need a special dimmer for them so I have a few spots in the house where I use incans and have hoarded some for that purpose.

Yep, true and I kinda forgot about that.  What no one bothered to tell the public was that these lights contain mercury and when broken, by law, have to be handled correctly since they are hazard  waste. I didn't originally believe that and had to look up the law. I don't know anyone that does that, or would.

I learned about the CFL mercury problem early. I won't buy one. I have gotten several dimmable LEDs and love them. You can use a regular dimmer switch.

We had CFL's in our elevator at work. i never take the elevator. The owner does. he is only in Fl in the winter, but when he does show up there is always a bulb out in the elevator. I gave up on them and put LED in.

vranasaurus

LEDs are clearly the future.

I have CFLs that I have been using for 5 years.  I started using them before they were mandated.

All fluorescent bulbs contain mercury.  BTW, Mercury gets released into the environment by the burning of coal. (which concerns me far more than CO2 emmissions)

Some people just sound opposed to new technology because its different.  Now I'm not saying CFL bulbs are the greatest thing since sliced bread  but they are a compromise just like anything else.  I like them because they seem to last me a long time.

I think we've all heard the old guy who cusses fuel injection because "I ain't never had trouble with no carburetor."  Or the guy who thinks you have to put 10W-40 in every vehicle because "that's what I've always used and 30 weight oil is just too light."

I'm not a huge fan of government regulation and telling people what to do.  But I think some of the resistance comes from the "I hate being told what to do" part of the brain.

Just like anything else the benefits are overstated by the proponents and the drawbacks are overstated by the opponents.

I hear yah on those new CF bulbs in the bathroom. One lasted only a month or less and went out.  I was so ticked since spent like 2 bucks per bulb or more that I called the company demanding they send me a direct replacement and they did believe it or not.

Doubt they will last years, but maybe I just got a bad bulb is all???

They do say to not mix in the bathroom incadescent with CF bulbs say if you have a row of 4-5 bulbs above the sink/mirror in the bathroom.  Not sure why, but they say not to.

I've replace about 60% of the bulbs in my house with LED's.

The other 40% are Florescent.      NO round bulbs in day house no more.

Prior to switching to the LED's I was replacing a bulb a week.

Then a buddy of mine who works for our power supplier happened to be in the neighbor hood and checked the power to the house.

It was way over the maximum.     He said it is a wonder it never blew out the TV, Computer, frig, garbage disposal, clocks and radios.

He lower it to what it was supposed to be and really haven't blown a bulb now for about a year.

Couldn't see any difference in the electric bill, but I don't track them, that well.

The bulbs themselves probably do last 10,000 hours.  Unfortunately the power supplies in the base of the bulbs won't.  They use electrolytic capacitors which do not last long when in a hot environment.  The Canadian Football League should have never got in the light bulb business.

I've had good luck with the CFLs I have scattered about., only replaced one or two of the bunch I bought.

still have a few incans, just in case.

LEDs are a better product and will become more economical in the future, thay have already dropped in price.

mythbusters rigged an experiment where they turned off and on all different types of bulbs, they powered up and down every few seconds. after a month the only one still working was the LED  :cooldude:

I was sold when they started puttinhg them in trailer lights for big rigs, they will almost last the life of the vehicle.

I had one CFL, didn't like the light.  I'll never have another (especially since they are mandated/PC).

I just use regular light bubs.

Serk

The thing with CFLs (And regular light bulbs too for that matter) isn't how many hours they'll run, it's how many on/off cycles they'll survive...

If you turn one on and leave it on always they'll last many many years. It's the on/off/on/off cycle of a light bulbs in a real life scenario that kills 'em...

At least, that's been my experience...

Sitting here at my puter, I just realized... my reloading bench/desk lamp is a Tensor 18" florescent.  I have had it since the mid-late 70s.  Shipped it all over and overseas and back.  It has sat in it's current spot for 21 years.  Gets daily use.  The 18" tube is the original.

On the other hand, I have had bad luck with 3 and 4 foot shop lights, if it isn't the bulb, it's the unit itself (like those spendy cloud units).

old2soon

My old desk lamp-well the exes old desk lamp just fell apart so I bought a new one last year. Got one of dem dere C F L things in it. Come out in the morning turn it on and go back and fix my coffee. Haven't timed it but takes a bit for it for the durned thing to get to full brightness and the light has a bluish tinge/tint to it. I stocked up on a bunch of incandescents when these c f l things came out. Got a c f l in an outside light and cold weather seems to affect the light output. RIDE SAFE.

Our Wally World has a crap load of incandescents.  They are stacked in the isles.  I thought they were outlawed, but a week or two ago they appeared.   About 4 years ago I moved into my new to me house, and spent about 400 bux replacing all the bulbs here, have had mostly good luck, but also have had a few quit.  This is a large place, and I did the change to try to save on the utility bill.  I think it did help, but they do have their drawbacks.

Mixed results here.  CFL"s I understand, are mainly made in China, nuff said.

On the other hand I have halogens in the kitchen floodlights.  I bought the new socalled more efficient halogens and shopped online for the best. Two out of six NEW halogens that I ordered were DOA ( made in Mexico) got replacements under warrantee.  I use halogens there as all floodlights are on dimmers, can't use cfls.  I'll change to  standard switches later.

I'm now using globe cfls in the bathroom and have good luck with them but I leave the lights on there most of the time. CFL'S do not like constant on and off use, dimmers, or cold.

I'll wait awhile on LEDS as they are sensitive to heat when they have high output.  I'll wait awhile until they solve that.

Incandescents are still the best all around but the government doesn't think so.

hubcapsc

We have gone to both CFL and LED.

When the CFLs in the bathroom finally heat up, they throw off OK light.
I just leave them on at night.

I really like LED in theory, but I'm sitting UNDER the lamp, not on the ceiling  :tickedoff:

I am far from a tree hugger I can assure you.  I was just pointing out that not using CFLs because of Mercury is not the greatest reason considering that much more mercury gets released from burning the coal that powers us.

I am also very pro coal as we have enough of that crap to power us for a very long time.

WamegoRob

I turned on two CFL bulbs in a couple of lamps at home, and other than a couple of power outages in my neighborhood they haven't been shut off since.. just sort of wanted to see how long they'd last.

They've been on for 21,000+ hours now.

I would suppose that turning them on and off daily would significantly reduce their life.

The 10% is wreaking havoc on our small engine budget.....the mechanic has a big pile of carbs that have been ruined due to this stuff...I had to replace the carb on my weed eater a couple of years ago and fear my blower carb is starting to go bad now......

And the idiots that have done that now think that 15% is in order..wonder who's getting the "Corn kickbacks" from this program??.....Seems the Navy just had a major scandal with bribes/kickbacks/prostitution favors....it gets to be ridiculous with all the corruption and graft these days.....

Ya can't blame obama on the 10% ethanol, the blame there falls on gore. But, even though the EPA now knows how bad the 10% stuff is and that it shouldn't have been forced on us, the obama admin in its infinite wisdom is still insisting on mandating the 15% crap.

I don't remember Mr. Gore being around in 1984.  Bought a new Chevy truck that year, ran 10% in it for 306000 plus miles.  I have had three since then.  My current '03 Silverado has 304000.  Nothing wrong with 10%!!!   But lets not increase it to 15% please.   PS   my 2000 IS runs just fine on reg. Wont waste my  money on mid grade or premium.

Don't remember gore in '84 ? Hmm, he was around quite awhile before then.

Its well documented that 10% harms engines and I can certainly attest that. I continue to get carburetors that need to be fixed because of that crap. Its mostly harmful to older stuff. Its also well documented that it causes lower fuel mileage, power and increased pollution. Its not hard to find that info.
