Here is the inside view of the OEM Petcock

On the OEM Petcock view, it looks pretty simple. Is it the ball that gets stuck? Any cautions or concerns removing the petcock?
Also, I am now aware I need a new air filter. Anything special I should know about that? OEM or aftermarker. How much $$?

Cappy. I use stock Honda air filter. I ordered a tire from Ron Ayers and also got an air filter for $19.88. You might find them a couple of bucks cheaper but I got FREE shipping with the deal. I believe H D L has them cheaper but my order would not have been large enough for free shipping from H D L. Get some on line prices and see if yer stealer/dealer will price match. My dealer will price match on some items but not all. RIDE SAFE.

+1 on the Honda air filter.  I've used K&N in the past, and it is a PITA to clean it, dry it, and re-oil it.  It'd much rather just snap a new one in, and the price isn't bad either.

I've also read the K&N isn't as effective at filtering.

The filter might come out with it, it might get stuck in the tank. But you can still get it
out pretty easy. Just realize that it really is in there.

I get a new filter when I rebuild the petcock. They look like pretty good filters to me,
so make sure you know what it looks like yourself before you put an extra filter on there,
Valkyries like gas to flow like water under pressure coming out of a four inch pipe... especially
when you crank the throttle...

Here's a link with a test, I've looked at several petcocks... busted ones don't pass this test,
good ones do, it is a good test: http://www.valkyrieriders.com/shoptalk/petcock.htm

Daniel Meyer has a test: use a mighty vac to pull a vacuum on the petcock and if it
holds vacuum it is good.

I like the other test, because I don't have a mighty vac and also because I like seeing that little
valve close down in the fuel outlet... I suspect, though, that the test I like might miss a tiny
pinhole in the diaphragm...

Cappy now you can see how the ball goes into each port when you turn the selector lever. It's spring loaded and you can feel a click when it's in the correct position. Thought I was getting super gas mileage one tank the trip meter was into 170's. I headed for a gas station knowing I must have stopped turning the selector before/after I felt the click. What that does is allow gas to flow from the lowest opening in the petcock (reserve) and run the tank empty.
It happens gives you a sick feeling at fill-up when you put in 4.8 gallons in a 5 gallon tank :) you were close to walking.

Myself personnally, I like the K&N filter.

My truck has one, mom's Highlander has one and MGM has had one for 15 years of it's life.

Cleaning one should not be a pain in the rear.      We have a big part cleaner in the shop.    Blow the excess dirt out of it, drop it in the tank and run solution all over it.    Let it drip dry, and apply the K&N cleaner, blow dry, apply oil, sparingly, reinstall, then I give it one more light spray of oil and button it up.

I know, this is my opinion and everyone has their own opinion.

Ride safe and keep the BRIGHT side up.    :cooldude: :cooldude:

the Honda "cover set" rebuild kit doesn't cover that side of the petcock at all.

I think, unless  you're handy, if something on that side goes out, you have to get a whole
new petcock... about $130 for OEM I think...

What all wears out on that side? The spring quits being springy? The ball goes square?

-Mike "real question, phrased kind of silly..."

That side of the petcock is held closed by rivets. Some have drilled them out, and then used a nut/bolt to hold it together. Some have also had leaks after opening that side, and replaced the petcock late on.

So, if the O rings wear out and the ball doesn't seat properly what happens?

Will the bike runs in any position then?

Simple answer is YES.

It can cause some difficulty finding "off".

Mike - from South Carolina:
Thanks for the link to the petcock info. & picture. That's what mine looked like. I didn't see the ball thing actually. I got brave and followed the instructions for cleaning the petcock, but here is my experience: The diaphram in the middle part curled up, but remained attached at the center through the hole in the middle section. I carefully fished the diaphram through the hole and it remained stubbornly attached to some component on the other side, like it was vulcanized. I sprayed carb cleaner on all components and gently fished the diaphram back through the middle housing again, and tried to reseat it onto the edges and reassembled it. I was cautious not to pull too hard, but attempted to break the suction from any vaccumn, which the instructions refer too. The center of the diaphram never released from whatever it was attached to, and I had a sense it was designed that way. So I just put it back together. I am feeling I was not successful,as yet.

Here is the curled up diaphragm that was in my buddy Gary's bike... there's no way a
diaphragm like this will ever do right again... ignore the nipple on the weep hole, the
PO of the bike tried some creative methods to stop the leak

Here's the distinct parts you're working with... they definitely seem stuck together,
but are separate parts... there's better pictures on the tech board if you search around...

It sounds like you need at least a cover set...

This diaphram rolled up like a burrito, and i had difficulty getting it to lay flat, but eventually seemed to get it seated (wishful thinking). Is that what I order some where, a "cover set"? Was the diaphram supposed to easily & completely separate from all componets, and be fully removable?

Hey Mike, Do you have a Honda part number for that fancy part holding thingy in your picture?  :uglystupid2:

This is the part number.   It is about $40.  But beats the $130 price of the whole petcock.
004   SCREEN SET 16952-MBY-003 I suggest the screen also.  About $15.

All the diaphragms I've taken apart didn't come apart easily... more often than not, they tear up...

This is the stuff I'd get to rebuild a petcock... won't help if "the other side" is messed up,
but I've fooled with five or six petcocks, a cover set fixed them all... don't be careless
installing the cover set, or you'll tear up your new stuff... a little alcohol (rubbing alcohol
on the diaphragms  :coolsmiley: ) can help... search the tech board for some of those
good pictures and know what you're trying to do before you get started...
