Thanksgiving dinner report.....

we have ride reports might as well give a food report 

we have new neighbors and they are great, the husband had a family emergency and had go back to Mass so we invited the missus to have dinner with us. we split cooking duties. she made stuffing, green beans, cranberries and brought the sangria. we cooked a 6lbs turkey breast and sweet potatoes with pineapple chunks, dinner rolls and I baked a pumpkin pie.

it all turned out pretty good considering I had never cooked sweet potatoes and pinapple before.

after dinner I got a text from my buddy in Tampa that I went to truck driving school with wishing me a happy Thanksgiving. I wished him the same and hoped he got lots of turkey. he said he will if Denny's has turkey. I got on him and said if he wasn't heading up to his family for holiday dinner he should give us a call

  Mother-in-law is in assisted living(95 in December) so the wife , granddaughter and great granddaughter (yeah,me too) went there for Thanksgiving . It was a good visit.
  On Saturday , my daughters family will be over for turkey and all the fixins'.
I still do the turkeys on the grill (breast side down , real moist white meat) over charcoal and stuffed with my sage dressing. I make a fantistic gravey to go with the bird and fresh mashed potatoes. Also sweet poratoes (naked,not sweetened) greenbean casserol,acorn squash,broccoli and cauliflower steamed with buttersauce. My wife got into warp speed and made 6(yes,six) pies and a birthday cake for the grandson. Pumpkin,cherry,mincemeat and my favorite ,fried apple pie.

Had two thanksgivings this year, Veterans day had the Seniors from our church in for an early thanksgiving, 48 of them showed up and left well fed.  I did two turkeys on the rotissary for this one.  For the real one, family and a couple of frinds, had 15, and only did one turkey.  Was a great enjoyable day and we had much to be thankful for.  Hope all you folks had a goodun too.

I'm still stuffed from yesterday I think I had more desserts than turkey and fixings:  pumpkin and apple pie,  cheesecake, snickers apple salad, and a few more enough to cause me to kick the bucket way too early on.  I had a hard time not sleeping in line at walmart afterwards yesterday afternoon late in the day to not pass out from being stuffed.  When I got home at 8:30 p.m.,  I was exhausted.

My mom I think ate more than me.  She literally had 7 huge scoops of that snickers apple salad made with cool whip and vanilla pudding - YUM, YUM.  VERY tasty and easy to make.   I think you all can figure out the ingredients:  cut up small chunks of snickers, vanilla pudding, cool whip, and small chunks of apples.

Save me a piece of that fried apple pie.     My last one of those was in 1991 when my mom was still living.    Grandma taught mom how and it went back several generations on how to do it.    The oldest one I heard of in my Family Tree software was born in Germany, in 1795, she married a dude from Wales, so I'm a 57 Heinz Variety.   I think my software says

I was going to pardon my turkey. I really was. I mean Presidents from both sides of the isle have been doing it for as long as I can remember, so it just seemed like that right thing to do. I brought him into the living room, fixed him some corn casserole, and turned on the game. Then, Oakland returned a fumble on the opening kick off to Dallas to score in the first 12 seconds of the game. That bird brain started flapping his wings and gobbling like he was happy about it. If I'd known we were going to win anyway, I might have cut him some slack. Oh well, he tasted pretty good.

You guys may or may not realize what a big deal this is and as important as the bird is my grandmother's cornbread-chestnut stuffing. I followed her directions to a "T" on both and the results were magnificent.

I followed her directions to a "T" on both and the results were magnificent.

I have. It's AWESOME. But for Thanksgiving the family is expecting traditional so I went that route. I might deep fry a small one on Christmas to go with the ham.

FYI, If you cook the turkey breast side down , the white meat is so moist you may think the turkey drowned. It is not the prettiest for presentation , but I am here for the flavour. I have even been in cooking contests with my turkeys . I love the taste of deep fried , but charcoal cooking is still the best in my opinion. Fall apart tender.

    The fried apple pie is now a necessary tradition.

Turkey number 2. I used to do one big bird. Now I do a couple in the 14 lbs. range. I'll do one for Thanksgiving, or Christmas, then do the other one a couple of days later as we're finishing up bird number 1.
