Interesting.   While watching the very first time through, I spotted the tractor/trailer up ahead turning.   Yet the rider wasn't slowing down.   Laying it down may have saved his life but, there was no need to do it.    Speed kills sometimes, especially when combined with stupid.     I suspect, we will read about this rider again, in the obituaries.

Would have helped if he used his brakes. Maybe he should practice, practice, practice.

I believe he used his rear brake as he tried to move to his right and the rear locked and he went down.
No reason for it. Plenty of time to stop. Just screwed up.

When my youngest son that he was going to be a football star (8 years old), he got into the habit of everytime he caught the ball he threw himself on the ground. Even when he did not catch the ball. he just that that that was what football players do.

Evidently some people who ride bikes have that 'image' of what they are supposed to do to avoid an accident.

If the rider had used his brakes, he probably could have rode around the front of the truck to the right or have come to a complete stop before getting to the truck. He'll never know now.

How many times have we seen stunt men 'laying down' a bike on TV and in the movies.

Unfortunetly TV and movies are where many people learn how to go through life.

Didn't even look like he touched the brake before he went over.  Laying the bike down should be an absolute last ditch act of desperation.  It looked like it was the first thing he did.

I used to belong to a much busier bike board.  Every day there was a post from someone who "had no choice" but to lay the bike down.  I used to wonder how many really went down because they panicked and swerved with brakes locked up?

Exactly right.  Plenty of time to avoid the truck.  He was not paying attention, and when he finally saw the truck turning, he panicked, locked up brakes, and went down. I doubt he intended on going down.

I think most riders who "had to lay it down", just use that as an excuse as to WHY they went down.  Easier on the ego than to say " I screwed up, locked up the brakes, lost control, and went down"!
