William "Bill" Overstreet died in Roanoke, VA on Dec 29th, 2013

I had the honor of meeting him last February:

He was a very humble man who lived a rather extraordinary life. The veterans of WWII have been dubbed, "America's Greatest Generation", Men like Mr. Overstreet prove that to be correct.

His most famous exploit was chasing a German ME109 underneath the Eiffel Tower during a Dogfight.

While he greatly downplayed it when I met him last February, he did say that when the German went underneath the Tower he knew that he had him. He stated that by flying underneath the Eiffel Tower the German pilot had severely limited the direction that he could fly in and had become a sitting duck.

His exploits during WWII would've made a great movie. Many people tried to get him to completely tell his story, but his sense of humility wouldn't allow it. He would just say that he wasn't the hero, he would say that the men who never made it back were the real heroes.

Hopefully, his story will now be told.

Whether it is or isn't, He was a HERO, and I'm glad to have had the Honor of meeting him.

Rest in Peace William Overstreet, You earned it.

Time marches on and we keep losing those of the greatest generation. Those that lived thru both the depression and WWII knew about life and I miss the ones that I knew. We could sure put to good use their wisdom today.

If they were 16 or 17 in 1941 they are now 89-90 years old now. Out Korean War Vets are in their late 70s early 80s. Out Nam Vets late 50s early 60s. Somebody and I've heard this before because it applies to both sides-TIME is doing what the enemy couldn't. William "Bill" Overstreet. May he forever REST IN PEACE. I've mentioned this before but when I go on a P G R mission for a WWII Vet-there are not a lot of folks around that are the WWII Vets age. Thanks for posting about this True AMERICAN WWII HERO. RIDE SAFE.
Today is the tommorow you worried about yesterday. If at first you don't succeed screw it-save it for nite check.  1964  1968 U S Navy. Two cruises off Nam.
