How cold is too cold for the hot tub IMPROVED WITH PICS

We just came back in from the outdoor hot tub which is between the house and the above ground pool

18 outside  no wind gusts
103 in the hot tub

When you come out the steam is just blowin off your body

The only thing better is when its snowing lightly without wind.  

How cold outside is too cold for you

We did not open the door last night when it was below zero and windy, just sat in front of the fireplace

Nope, I mean mine.  I grow it back all winter so folks gets their money's worth when I shave her off in the spring.

Haven't found a time too cold yet and in it almost every night. However ours sits in an screened patio. Actually the colder the nicer, but, there is only one way to go in or, more importantly, out of the tub when its really cold and thats with no clothes. They freeze really really fast.

As long as there's no wind, no limit for me.  Record so far is -22°.  Hot tub at 106° indicated.  Of course the hot tub is 5 ft from the door to warmth...

It's never too cold to be IN a hot tub.

However, upon departing a hot tub, the question is, how far can you travel before important parts  freeze and fall off?

What used to really get to me, was to be in only a moderately hot tub in summertime, then climb out and step into the house for another beer.  The icy indoor AC would give me worse shakes than any winter weather ever did.

Mine is out on the deck inoperable/winterized a couple years ago.  I just got tired of diddling with the water/ph/shock/cleaning/refilling and the electric bill.  

I am certain the family of cute little field mice that spent every winter under my on-ground deck/tub are entirely bummed out.

Same here,  just came back from the waterparks in WI Dells a few weeks ago it was near -30/-40 windchill and mgmt. was thinking of shutting down the outdoor hot tub since was hard keeping it running at around 110 degrees they said.  Sure is pretty with snow falling down with outdoor fireplace running sipping your favorite beverage of choice in an outdoor hot tub - for sure!  

I have been in one hot tub in SD indoor waterpark only and stated 'adult only'.  I could see why, it was for sure over 120 degrees and could only stay in there for 5-10 minutes tops since was darn near burning the skin.  I like hot, HOT tubs, but not scalding hot almost.

Been using our hot tub for over 6 years now, never too cold, only look out for the wind. That could do some serious damage. Also, I always use a toque (winter hat) on my head while in the tub...

Its about 15 steps to the hot tub from the door

Cant handle it over 104 so I set it at 103.   I give you fellas credit for 110 or higher

I like to keep the "boys" closer to my body temp     and dont want
to set Bonnies high blood pressure off by scalding her with high temp in the tub

I whole heartedly agree but, I have to suggest that Oss is missing an opportunity to conduct some interviews for that secretarial position.   Obviously a few pics from those interviews while being conducted in the hot tub could be of interest to those who wish to ensure Oss is able to hire only the best qualified candidate for the position.

I like to impress my neighbors ! [actually I really don't have close neighbors, they'd need a telescope].

Seems like 104º for only 15 minutes is the max thats recommended and the max setting is supposed to be only 104º. I don't know, Maybe things have changed. But, regardless, I've adjusted mine so I can raise the temp. I can only handle about 107º and usually wake up after 45-60 minutes.

Those are the temps I recall as well Patrick.  103-4 for no more than 20 minutes.

Had a couple small get togethers where someone with a couple drinks went completely to sleep (not passed out), and had to get them out before they maybe slipped below the surface and drowned.

Hey, that's not my belly button....... That's OK, that's not my finger either.    

And after grilling burgers and dogs with the beer, you'd think people would have the courtesy to get out of the tub before passing big bubbles.

I suppose.  Worth it to me though.  Effort - 10 min every 1-2 weeks to test and adjust.  Chemical cost negligable as the only chems I get at spa supplier is the bromide tabs, buy them online 3# for $25 every 2-3 years.  Also refresh test kit chems about as often. Other chems are all Costco or Home Depot sourced, almost nothing.  Yeah it impacts the electric bill quite a bit.  But I use it 3-4 times a week and house guests and visiting family really dig it (none have a spa) so it's worth it to me.

I gave the chem kit to a friend, I had it hanging around for only about 20 years. I just change the water at least once a month.
I quit using bromine probably 15 years ago and just use the 'Frog'.

Now they have 40 jets, massage, sound systems and pop up TV's and are $15,000-20,000

After almost 30 years you get used to higher temps, but, I can't take the heat that some say they they have theirs set at.
Mine is an old pretty basic model which I like, I seldom turn the air pump on. I like it quiet and peaceful.

BTW, I refill my "frog" cartridges myself with bromide tabs and sodium bicarb.  Change the water when it won't balance anymore, or when the chem smell gets noticable.  Which takes about 4 months.

I also rarely turn the jets on, though it has a lot of them.  And an LED light show, and a waterfall.  Nope, just sit in the dark, enjoy the hot water & quiet, and the stars - meteor showers - satellites - space station going over.  BTW, you can sign up for an email when the station will come over and be visible - always just after dark when it's still lit by the sun.

You could have informed the manager of this exciting new technology that is available at a reasonable price for monitoring such things. Tell him it is a thermometer and lets you know-without guess work-the temperature of things such as water in the hot tub. I used to like them, we had one here for a few years but it fell into disrepair with the underground plumbing which was part of the pool circulation system. After a couple estimates we decided to get rid of it.

Before I met my present wife I recall dating a gal that talked about her hot tub. She was always bugging me to come try it out with her, and finally jokingly added it was illegal to wear a swimming suit in a hot tub. Oh really? Short story....I never got in the hot tub with her. In fact I never went past her front door. Looking back...kinda glad now.
