To keep the poster girl for gun control in the news, Gifford is skydiving on the anniversary of her gundown.  Kinda pathetic to me the lengths the liberals are willing to go to keep their agenda newsworthy.   I have great empathy for what happened to her, but to keep on letting herself be used like this to me is deplorable.  Guess it just goes along with the "Never let a crisis go to waste." even years after it happened.

Gun controll is not about guns, its about CONTROLL.

Don't really agree with your perspective. Maybe a very small part. But not really.

This gal suffered a traumatic brain injury. She has fought back and did extraordinarily well.
She is an inspiration to others who have similar injuries, whatever the cause.

On the other hand she did jump out of a perfectly good airplane... But I digress.

That her injuries came from a gunshot is part of the story. Can't get away from that.
That doesn't mean that she is absolutely right about her political views on guns and gun laws or anything else.

I think the fact that she is taking on such challenges is incredible and uplifting.

And I'll be glad to argue with her on the merits of her political views on anything including gun control.

I'll have to give a look. I thought she and her husband were still pro gun.

Patrick, having guns, yes. Wanting to let you have guns, no.
I think her cognizance level is more than reduced. They parade her around in, what I would consider an inappropriate manner. Skydive?? Really? She should have been at one of the memorials in her and the other's honor. That would have been more sincere, by far.
How much juice did they pump into her so they could get a photo op.
The big line at the end of the story is "Landed without injury"..
Travesty on that poor soul.
They = Mark Kelly. Ring master and puppeteer trying to establish some political chops.

I agree.  I have thought the same thing.  They are exploiting her for political gain.

Gabby Giffords suffered a devastating injury and seems to me to be trying to find common sense ways to reduce gun violence without infringing on the right of law-abiding Americans to keep and bear arms. That's a lot different than trying to rid society of all firearms and a long way away from any perceived philosophy of "guns are fine for me but not for you" that is being suggested.

There will always be those who believe any attempt to reign in the violence is merely a smokescreen to hide a more sinister agenda. There will always be those who believe any attempt to head off any and all legislation pertaining to firearms is also a smokescreen to hide a more sinister agenda. Both sides of the question seem to be far more interested in questioning the sincerity and intelligence of those with whom they disagree rather than understanding why they disagree.

Such insulting rhetoric on both sides seems to be more pandering to one's own hallelujah section than a serious attempt to bridge the divide using rational debate but it also seems to be more and more common in an age when people are more apt to talk at each other rather than to each other. It's really too bad that such a tendency seems to be the one common characteristic which so many conservatives and liberals share as that is the one characteristic that pretty well guarantees conflict.

I seem to remember that right after his wife was shot he bought one of those scary bad black AR15's. However, I don't doubt that there some that would try to exploit her.
I may be a moderate on the subject and I disagree with some friends and probably some here. If a person wants a gun or a bazooka I feel he should be able to do so as long as he 'seems' to be mentally stable and able to pass a background check. NYS has some strict hand gun laws and permitting/licensing system. I don't have much of a problem with such laws as long as they used with some good reasoning. There are some issues here in this state that I do have a problem with in that some judges that are anti-gun are not signing handgun permit apps or stonewalling the issuance of permits because of their personal views. But, I digress as usual. I don't have a problem with registration or thorough initial background checks.

I live in Tucson and remember that day.  This one too;
Mark Kelly tried to buy a scary black gun and stated he was going to turn it over to someone for destruction, just to show how easy it is to get one. He has a CCW, as does/did she. There is no background check if you have a CCW because that Requirement has already been satisfied. They snuck a camera into Diamondback Police Supply so they could "document" the transaction.
When exposed as a STRAW buyer the sale was terminated.
He did however get, and keep the pistol he bought that day.
This affected the store's credibility in the community in that they would do biz with someone so vehemently anti gun and yet, has an extensive collection. They were pro 2nd before the incident.
If sincerity was the goal, they should have had her at one of the vigils accross town and let her get the adoration she warrents from her adoring fans.
Instead, tossing her out of a plane, though inpressive, was pretty selfish.

Seems to me that with her diminished mental abilities perhaps she should be barred from access and ownership of any guns.  Isn't this what the gun control crowd has been wanting?

I would also question the availability of his guns to a mentally deficient person...perhaps their gun ownership days should be behind them.

+1
Jim Brady is getting a little long in the tooth to be the left's poster child for gun control.  Gifford will be his replacement for years to come.

Those trying to implement the plan might be pure as the driven snow, but the schemes they put in place WILL eventually be used for evil, maybe not by those who have the best intentions in place while implementing them, but at some point, those schemes will be used against good people.

In light of the intractability between those who see government evil in every proposal and those who cannot be convinced that individual gun owners are responsible simply by virtue of the demographic group they belong to, here's another idea on the table.

Maybe everyone who says anything in a public forum, newspaper, tv, internet, radio, etc needs speech insurance.  You know, in case you say something false and get sued.  Or someone posts a video of doing something stupid and someone imitates it and gets killed.  The 1st Amendment needs to be seriously reigned in.  I mean, if a video can cause a consulate to get attacked, who knows what can happen with all of this unrestricted free speech.
Maybe we need to license anyone who says things in a public forum, so we know who to hold accountable.  (don't bring up fcc licensing, since you are paying for the frequency use, not the right to speak).
