On the way home to get icecream without getting out of the car. I ordered a half gallon of caramel crunch and a quart of vanilla. With the old people discount it was $9.61. We looked in the bag and there was two quarts. I politely told the kid (I am being nice ) I wanted a half gallon and a quart. He calls over the assistant manager ( teenie bopper) and she says we don't have half gallons. What do I really want. I said that two quarts make a half gallon , and I would like T W O quarts of the crunch. As she walked away , "whatever". Then the kid said that it would be $6.51 for the quart.
How can two quarts be $9.61 and one be $6.51? He called t b over and she explained that is the price of one and the second is $2.99. I already bought two. But you did not buy two now. I asked for the manager (by name) and she came over and I briefed her on what was going on. The first one is $5.99 and all others are $2.99 no matter how many you buy after it on a visit. With the discount I paid $2.90 for the additional one. She ( manager)did not want me to pay for it , but I did not feel right about it.
W T H are they teaching or not teaching in school. They don't kmow two quarts make a half gallon.

My sophomore daughter and I were discussing change given out when she is asked to work the concession stand in high school.  She said she is the best one to ask for change and the other girls always ask her what the change would be.  Although,  tonight I asked her what 1.75 x 4 is and she had no clue.  She came up with 6.25 off the top of her head.  I best be going to more high school BB games for I'd really get a good deal on food bought there.  ;D

I'm with you all on this.  Basic three R's are NO longer being taught any longer in school which is so wrong and not saying much for the next generation when us older farts get old.  Even our dinky school system of about 25 kids per class all have laptops from 6th grade on up to use for homework no longer need pencils and paper, well almost none anyways.

Couple of weeks ago I had a brainiac at Dollar General and the encounter went something like this. Rang up $11.58. I hand Ms. brainiac A Twenty A Single and 58 cents. Now I already have a mess of singles BUT not eleven of them. So the first thing Ms. Brainiac says to me is I gave her too much money.  :-\ And I ask politely for her to just ring it up.  :crazy2: So-Thank GOD-she entered the equation correctly cause the register showed change returned-$10.00. One would think at this point in time one would be on the proper track!!-one would be wrong.  :-X She started to count out 10 singles but I stopped her with-princess-I REALLY do not need 10 singles would much prefer a 10 Dollar bill or 2  5 Dollar bills.  After a look that-yes-I did determine she is brain dead-she gave me a 10 Dollar bill but had I not insisted she take back the 3 singles she had already counted out her register would have been short at shift change. And the really GOOD part of all this-these ARE the folks that will not ONLY be picking our nursing homes-they will ALSO be staffing said nursing home!!  :cooldude: Is ya askeered yet??  :2funny: RIDE SAFE.

I stopped a McDonalds last fall and asked for 1/2 dozen chicken fingers.

She said we don't sell them that way.   They are 3, 6, 9 or 12.    I asked her what grade she was in, she said I have graduated High School and going to AIB.

I said okay give me a 1/2 dozen then, we don't sell them that way, I said okay give me 6 then, that is a 1/2 dozen, she looked at me and said since when.   I just paid for my fingers and went on about my business.

Another time out in Wyoming, I'd placed my order and she told me how much.   I handed her a $20.00, and about that time a streak of lighting hit the top of the store knocking all the juice out.

She couldn't figure out how much change I had coming even with a calculator.  I tried to tell her how to figure it out, but she couldn't follow me.   Finally she handed me my $20.00 back and said this is on the house.    I said thank you and left.

All of my kids could make change by the time they were 4 years old.

in defense of the server that day I'd like to think that it was a school night, and maybe that kid was in class since 8 am, possibly up at 6 am getting ready for everything, maybe taking care of other siblings, taking AP (advance placement) classes, maybe she's a club president, maybe she was at sports practice till late the previous night, maybe she was just tired.

my daughter is a very smart kid, but she burns the wick at both ends, usually with a flame thrower, and being as smart as she is, she'll make some really stupid "no brainer" mistakes.  it's not that the kids now a days are "stupid" they're just doing a hell of a lot more than they sometimes should be.

here's an example;

my daughter had a "blonde" moment the other day......

while making Ice Tea, there was a 1/3 cup scooper in the container, and the mix calls for 2/3 cup of powder per 1/2 gallon.  so, she figured that the 1/3 cup wasn't enough, but used ebonics math and came up with 1/3 + 1/3 = 2/6th (which she knew wasn't the same as 2/3)......  needless to say the tea tasted bland since it only ended up with about 1/2 cup of powder mix.

normally she's really good with her math, but she had just worked a full 10 hour day dealing with stupid people, and I'm pretty sure that wore off on her.

(yes, I did have a little cooking class with her, she did learn from her mistake)

Yep and they all want a raise ???

here in Wisconsin the wacco democrats want a $10 minimum wage....  can you imagine a 17 year old kid flipping burgers, making as much as a factory worker today?  all that raising the minimum wage is going to do is increase the number of illegal aliens coming to this country.

I understand and agree with most of the comments below but...............

There are other contributing reasons many folks can't make change or use basic math.
We no longer have to work our brains.   Cash registers now tell us how much change we need, we use calculators to do simple math, our skills are being diminished by these tools.   You lose what you don't use.   I'm not suggesting schools and parents don't own some responsibility but, these tools don't help us maintain our basic brain functions.

Think about this, I used to be able to dial every friend's phone number I knew, I could recite phone numbers of businesses and others I needed to call every now and then.    Now, I might be able to recite my wife's phone number but, only because it a single digit off of my own.   How often have you asked someone their phone number for whatever reason and you get the response of, I don't know, I don't ever call myself.   I'm telling you, these tools are making us stupid.

isn't that the truth!!  I use to be able to just LOOK at a 7 decimal number and have it memorized!!  now I've got to say it four, even five times!!

now, I use my cell phone camera and take pictures of what ever I need to remember.  you know, pictures of the wife, kids, and they usually are holding cards with their names written on them!  ;D

I wholeheartedly agree. As much as I love technology, I have to admit it is diminishing our capacity to make on the fly calculations in our heads. This along with what is it doing to our memory. Often my wife and I are sitting watching t.v. or doing something and a question arises as to who is that ?, what's their name or any number of trivia type questions. It seems it's real easy to go to the smart phone or tablet and Google. That's a great tool, but I question what the net effect on our memory recall and critical thinking. Fortunately, my job exercises my brain quite a bit, but can't help imagining that we ,as a society, might be dumbing down due to our access to technology. If there ever is a major power grid failure, what will come of us? :D

I was a in a book store years ago buying the new issue of a Pontiac Magazine when the power went out right before I got to the register. The mag was like $1.95. The girl behind the register could not figure 5% sale tax. I had to figure it up in my head for her.

My wife is mathematically challenged. Not as bad as her being Directionally Challenged but right up there.  If I ask her what is 10% of something is she cant tell me. She didn't know how many quarts are in a gallon. Oh and forget about decimals or reading a tape measure. BUT I still lover her.

Now me I cant spell worth a crap so it all works out in the end. If it wasn't for spellcheck I would be screwed........

Growing up I had all my friends phone #s in my head. Somebody wanted my ex B I L # the other day and I said-6-which is what it is-on my speed dial.  :2funny: I've mentioned this before but try it you might get a laugh-or arrested.  :uglystupid2: Next time yer at micky Ds or B/K and they ring up your bill hand them the 20 Dollars or 30Dollars for the bill and if you have change coming back-cover up the readout on the cashier's side and see if they can get you the correct change.  My 2nd ex ole lady still knows the first phone # we ever had together.  ;) RIDE SAFE.

Mark, I sincerely hope that is not determined by either your spelling skill or her mathematical abilities.   ;)

We already have the illegal aliens by the bus loads and our companies are dumb enough to readily hire them over U.S. citizens.  I should know, I work for one of them dumb companies.  :tickedoff:

WE like going to Culver's though but the prices are getting so crazy high all we get is the 4.79 kids meal or snack pak for 4 bucks.  Everything else on the menu is 7 bucks on up way too rich for my blood having to shell out nearly 30 bucks for a family of 4.  Just a few years ago the snak pak was 3 bucks and kids meals 3.79.  I really can't see the justification for the 1 dollar price increase in a few short years but then again, like everyone has said,  these kids are nearly getting paid in high school working at these fast food places what some of us factory/office workers are getting paid after working for 10-15 long years.

Bighead

Yep and the more minimum wage goes up they less you will have because prices increase and you won't get  a raise to offset it. They are trying to put everyone at the same level.

So the kid has trouble giving you what you wanted. Prolly 16 years old and new to the job. It least these kids are working unlike many kids.
