On November 22nd, American Motorcyclist Organization Vice President for Government Relations Wayne Allard sent a letter to Center for Disease Control Director Tom Frieden asking, "Is it the goal or strategy of the CDC to reduce the use of motorcycle – a legal mode of transportation – by recommending and pursuing a federal helmet law?"

The AMA is not alone in questioning both the knowledge and mandate of the CDC and it's Community Preventive Services Task Force to rule over motorcycling safety. Since riding motorcycles is a legal means of transportation – and not an illness requiring a cure – U.S. Rep. Tim Walberg (R-Mich.) sent a letter with the same overriding concern the day prior to the AMA letter.

These concerns raised by Allard and Walberg arose from the October meeting of the task force in which a slide in a presentation "link[ed] the adoption of universal helmet-use laws to a potential reduction in motorcycle riding, which would help meet the CDC's goal to reduce injuries and fatalities."

Allerd's letter stated, "With the safety of motorcyclists the utmost priority of the AMA, we are willing to work with all stakeholders, including the CDC, to promote rider education and training, as well as motorist awareness programs. These are effective strategies to reduce motorcycle crashes from ever occurring. Whereas, universal motorcycle helmet laws do nothing to prevent crashes."

The AMA has a long history of advocating helmet use and rider education over government intervention in the decision by adults as to whether they should or should not wear a helmet. The AMA believes the effort to increase motorcycle safety should come in the form of "voluntary rider education, improved licensing and testing, and expanded motorist awareness programs." Unlike educational programs, mandatory helmet laws do not prevent motorcycle accidents but, rather, try to minimize the effects of those crashes.

A FAQ about the question of whether the CDC wants to reduce motorcycle ridership was prepared by the AMA and posted on its website.

people need to understand that with the passing of "obummer care" there WILL be a national manditory helmet law.  think of it; if the government is going to provide health care, then they're going to dictate what you can do with your life.  if you partake in "dangerous" activities, then you'll be penalized.  and EVERYBODY knows riding a motor cycle is dangerous!!
Promote world peace, ban all religion.

Alph,

I hate to disagree with you on this, but it is a part of a far larger conspiracy.

This past weekend we attended a seminar that featured as keynote speakers, Imre Sautre of the AMA and Jay Johnson of the MRF. The CDC in conspiricy with NHTSA has stated that the Ferderal Government must have a mandatory national helmet law within two years of face loss of statewide Federal Highway Funding. And by 2025 all highway driven motorcycles will be banned from all public roads.

They have the support of most major Insurance Companies, the American Medical Association, and many State Police Agencies.

It is time to contact your state and federal ledgeslators on the Transportation and Insurance commitees. Do not get argumentive or mention Constitutional rights (the Constitution makes no provisions for any type of transportation)

And get involved with the AMA, ABATE/MRF, CoC, MSF and any other motorcycle rights organization or bid your bike 'bye bye'.

This man speaks the truth... Look at countries with communist healthcare systems, they've all got mandatory helmet laws... The two things go hand in hand.

I can't help about the shape I'm in
I can't sing, I ain't pretty and my legs are thin
But don't ask me what I think of you
I might not give the answer that you want me to

The Federal Government would not have to worry about facing the loss of "statewide Federal Highway Funding" because the Federal Government is the source of that funding through general revenue.

The Feds dole out Highway funds only if the states comply.

The bigger issue is the future banning of all street motorcycles!!!

do you have any links to the potential 2025 ban in america?  all I can find so far via google is that veitnam is considering banning them in major cities sometime around 2025 IF they can get the public transportion infrastructure in place by then.

why would insurance companies want to ban motorcycles?  are the insurance companies really paying out more in covered losses than they are taking in from the high premium prices we pay for coverage?

Although i agree with the AMA totally on their aim of educating riders and motorists alike, with a goal of fewer motorcycle accidents, I fear they are beating a dead horse. The government long ago gave up on educating drivers as far as safety goes. Instead they mandated that automobile companies build their cars in a way as to protect the inhabitants when an accident occurs. What this policy has gotten us is a nation full of folks who don't take their driving seriously. I see no reason for them to treat motorcyclists any differently. A shitstorm of protest is the only way to stop the "we know better than you" juggarnaut.
Everything is political. Whoever wins the minds of the sheep gets his way. Its the essence of democracy.
Freedom loving, responsible people have not been winning as of late. Say since the eighties.

Self driving cars will be here sooner than most people realize. Every car going the same speed, in controlled lanes in the name of safety. It is coming, but, think about it. The computer controlled traffic system will not operate properly if folks are still allowed to operate their vehicle as we do now. There will be a time when both types of locomotion share the road, until only the pre-programmed pods are allowed. Enjoy your knees in the breeze now, while you still can.
Motorcycles will become illegal to operate on highways about the same time as these new self-guided cars become the norm. It's all in the name of safety!  :police:

I program a lot of control panels for work. I have seen these computer programs take on a mind of their own several times. Had one the other day switch the direction the motor was running. I turned everything off and restarted the system and it was fine. If these problems occur in simple PLC programs I can only imagine what a computer programmed car could do. Oh you want to go straight at 60 mph, then a sudden right turn into a telephone pole.
