Actually I get it.  With one of my best friends being a parrot, who astounded me so much with his intelligence that I quit bird hunting - I used to take him not everywhere but many places on my shoulder.  He loved it.  I quit because he got so pissed at having his flight feathers trimmed that I told him, "OK you can fly but you aren't going outside anymore."  They are FAR smarter than other pets and better companions - and they live 4 times as long as dogs.

I was talking with a driver about his bird that always primps and poses for the pictures people take. he said his cockatoo is about as smart as a 6 year old, but has the temperment of a 2 year old.  that's not a good combo

We have cockatiels.  The wife and I would love to have an African Grey, but with their 80 year lift span, we are afraid of what happens when we pass away since we are in our 40's.

       I don't guess I'll ever have one of them as a pet.  My dogs are already smarter than me, and I can't imagine having a pet smarter than them.

Goffin Cockatoo here.. He's only good for 50 isn years....

He has his own room and TV.....

Hes about 20 now.

He and the cat don't get along... but its not the Bird I'm worried about.

He also used to go with me a lot, but I don't clip him since the cat came in the house.

The renaissance faire I spend my spring at has a falconry demonstration and show. After the show they let people come up and get a close look at the birds. During this period I came up and was making funny faces at one of the falcons, sticking my tongue out at it, going "Nyah nyah nyah!" to it...

The royal falconer came over and asked what the *($#$#@ I was doing.

I told him I was doing research for my new novel I was working on.

1970. The locak K-mart impersionator had a rockin pet department.
They had a big red military macaw that would let everyone touch it and would climb up on your arm. I tried and it spread its wings and hissed. I backed right up. A few weeks later I tried it again while Mom was grocery shopping. The bastard bit me good in the web between thumb and forefinger. Without even missing a beat I wrung its neck. My brothers were surprised, to say the least, and the dept. manager was freaking out. They paged Mom to the pet departmend. I was crying and bleeding real good. The first thing outta Mom's mouth was, " Do I have to pay for that"?
( That too, is a true story, better in person, btw.)
