So I've seen a bunch of photos posted of what I hope will be within day-trip distance of Asheville, but because I've never been in the area, It's hard to visualize the location just based on a highway number, and I really have no idea if what I'm seeing in the photos is what I can expect to see when I'm there for Inzane.

What I'd like all y'all (did I say that right?) to do is post your photos of interesting or spectacular roads and scenery that is within an easy distance for a half or full day trip from Asheville.  Please also give your best guess of the grid location on the map I'm providing below, and indicate which highway number or road name, even if this map is zoomed out too far to see it.  If you happen to have the GPS location of your photo, some of us might even be able to make use of that as well.

I really don't know anything about the area myself as I've only ever been on less than a handfull of roads up there.  19 west out of Asheville back towards Maggie Valley, then continue west on 19 to Cherokee.  From Cherokee, north on 441 over the top of the Smokies from N. Carolina on down the other side into Tenn, Gatlenburg and Pigeon Forge.

From that area, there's a couple roads you can take making a big circle back to Asheville.  The Insterstate 40 back to Asheville is pretty darn twisty for an Insterstate....at least for this flatlander from Florida.   ;D

The start of the Blue Ridge starts about half way between Cherokee and the Tenn/N. Carolina state lines at the top.

Going north down the other side heading towards Gatlenburg you get to do the corkscrew.

The only other road I've ever been on was from Cherokee west on 19/74/64 back to Cleveland, TN on our way to Chattanooga.
I can't help about the shape I'm in
I can't sing, I ain't pretty and my legs are thin
But don't ask me what I think of you
I might not give the answer that you want me to

Want to drag some pegs ? Hwy.209 " The Rattler " ( L -12 ) .... Check with the old country store at the " Y " they have cool Rattler t-shirts. The springs at Hot Springs are pretty cool to check out you will pass Hwy 63 while doing this ride from Lake Junaluska to Hot Springs... Hwy 63 is another fun road to scratch some pavement and it will take you back toward the Asheville area.... Nice loop ride here I'll add to this thread from time to time I know so many cool roads and things to see within a good day ride of Ground Zero.

I've seen alot of people that thought they were cool , but then again Lord I've seen alot of fools.

Blue Ridge Parkway.

One day go north

Nuther day go south.

Turn around and ride back cause the roads different in the other direction.

If you take a side road off the BRP and it goes to dirt DO NOT go any further cause you will end up nowhere. Bit like going on a dirt road near where you live.

DO NOT ride the BRP at dusk/dark. So many animals to try and kill you.

Without the safety of some of the cut back each side of the road you have in BC.

I was impressed with the cut back when I was riding there. Saved me a few times.

Linville viaduct on the Blue Ridge Parkway at m-10

Highest point on the BRP at r-15

The Blue Ridge Parkway runs right thru Asheville and is one of my favorite rides.  The scenery around Asheville to both the north and south along the parkway is the best IMO.  To the south is Mt Pisgah,  and the highest point, just to name a few.  To the north is Craggy Gardens,Mt Mitchell, Linville viaduct, little Switzerland, .  You can go online and look at the mileage on the parkway to get a better idea of distance. check out blueridgeparkway.org as a start But I promise you won't be dissapointed in the roads or the scenery.

If you are riding  and it is a must that you keep your eyes on the road, you are riding too fast.

Not trying to hijack the post, but I really like the way Reb's bike looks in the black and white photo. I think that would make a nice color combo.

Not to further hijack the post, but I think Honda really dropped the ball by not making a black and white

Here are some rides I take now and then. You will see most of the sites that are in the photos posted above.

A short ride I like to take people on is I-26 south to Airport road Hwy 280. Take it to Brevard. Then pick up Hwy 276 north. Hwy 276 follows a small river with water falls and lots of places to pull off. This will take you to the Blue Ridge Parkway. If you turn South on the parkway you will go to the heights point with tunnels along the way. If you turn North you will go back to Asheville with more tunnels along the way. The loop back to Asheville takes about three hours if you don't stop. But trust me everyone stops along the way. Plan on all day.

Hwy 9 east of Asheville is one of my favorites from Black Mountain.  Head south on Hwy 9 and Stop at 74A and detour east a little ways to Chimney Rock and Lake Lure. Then back west to Hwy 64 west to Hendersonville. Hwy 9 has sweepers and switch backs. Chimney Rock has lots of trials to hike. Hendersonville has a nice down town. 1/2 day ride with short stops.

River Road Hwy 251 along the side of the French Broad River. Head north on I-26 and exit the second exit after you turn off I-240. Turn left at bottom of ramp. Then just follow the river to Marshall and pick up Hwy 25/70 west to Hot springs. In Hot springs pick up Hwy 209 south to I-40 and back east to Asheville. Hwy 209 is a roller coaster. Hot Springs is a good place to get something to eat and look around. All day ride.

South on I-26 to Hwy 25. Then pick up Old Spartanburg Hwy 176 to Saluda, Tryon, Landurm then pick up Hwy 11 west in Campobello. Hwy 11 west will turn into Hwy 276. Take Hwy 276 north to Hwy 64 east back to Hendersonville or 280 back to the airport and I-26. Make sure you stop at Caesars Head State Park look out. A good 6 hour ride.
