Been 160 in a '67 Shelby GT 500 Mustang once.  Car was still pulling.   :)
I can't help about the shape I'm in
I can't sing, I ain't pretty and my legs are thin
But don't ask me what I think of you
I might not give the answer that you want me to

rocketray

well   look up "BIG BEND OPEN ROAD RACE"   I finished less than a 1/3 of a second of my precise time at 135 mph and got 15th place!!

Serk

I would LOVE to do that, but... not in a Vette... would be too worried about something falling off...

Broke 160mph in a 66 sport furry, had to come home and do the gear ratio and rpm math because the speedometer was pegged.

Been 180 on my ZX14, was still pulling, but was fast enough for me and wont ever do it again.  I am sure it is capable of 200 but I am not as young and foolish as I used to be.  Pretty sure that was a fairly accurate reading, as it is equipped with a Speedohealer calibrated for gearing and tire size.  My Bud runs his Busa to 170+ quite often.

While visiting my daughter and son-in-law last x-mas we rented an Audi A4. The tires were rated @240, which I had to push it to several times during the week. Of course that is kph on the Autobahn in Germany, high speed is a rush! HT

Did 125 on Kansas black top once on my Valk.  Just once!   :o  Hoser

Give me the same blocked road with all the permits necessary and no police... Duh!  Heck yeah I could do it... and since they won't ever do that for me... I'll just continue to do it on the runway at the airshows with an FAA permit!!!   :cooldude:

Yeah, I could do it...Did a certified 154.92 on a one mile oval at Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet, Il. a couple years back. That's all the car had. I was into the Rev limiter. Another 50 on a straightaway would be a piece of cake.

I have done this and it was a hoot.

Talladega.

It has a Indian Curse on it, a burial ground. Where the track was constructed.

Was there, and I did 181 on the back stretch, or the Driver did, I was on a ride along.

Did a ride along in Las Vegas and got to 170, but not 200.  Then I drove a sprint car on the track at a Richard Petty Driving Experience and was allowed to get to a 144 average on the "follow me" drive, although now they limit you to 140 top speed.

The ride at 170 was more than fast enough.  Don't think I'd like to be driving at 200 - things just happen tooooooo fast.

Looks like that last 15 mph took some oommph to get that corvette to it's top speed of 200 mph, doubt it had much left in it.

I am sure I could easily, with the right car, drive 160 mph but 200 mph highly doubt it beyond my nerves in a car.  135 mph would probably be my limit on a cycle.

If you do some research,  the new corvette coming out is one pretty awesome machine going to put the old corvettes to shame let alone any other factory car on the market to date.

Also did the Richard Petty Driving Experience at Daytona a few years ago. We were limited to 134 mph as we had to follow the lead car. The first time into turn one at speed it looked like you were running  into an asphalt wall.  :o I had a great time.
And yes, I'd give it a try.

With that car, on that road, under those conditions.....why not?  I would love to!

I remember a day when a long and fairly straight road in colorado served as the path for my cut down '34 Chevy truck to push the needle to 160.  That was an exciting time!  Specially when I realized the front wheels were no longer in contact with the ground.   :o  I quikly became a believer in proper air management for speeds much above 100.

I've been over 500 knots.... but the 8 G turns made me woozy.

Open speed challenge in Nebraska once a year.

For the first time ever a "One Mile Shootout" was held on a closed public highway in 2002.  This event is now an integral part of the SORC and creates great excitement for drivers and more than 1,000 spectators each year.  The shoot out format has now been copied by several national racing organizations.  The current speed record for the one mile is 224.77 MPH set in 2009.
