10 years to complete desmog!

I originally desmoged my bike right after I bought it ten years ago, but just capped the chrome tubes rather than eliminate them. No problems with that, but got tired of looking at those tubes-to-nowhere, and the rubber caps I used were looking pretty sad. After going to 5 (FIVE!) auto parts stores finding 9/16" freeze plugs (What vehicle is this for, sir? Arrgghh!) finally got her done. I thought I would have to remove the exhaust to get the pipe mounts off the bottom side, but was not necessary.

Anyone that did a quickie desmog like I did I would recommend taking the next step-looks much nicer!

It does clean up the engine quite a bit. !
I've done both our bikes & they turned out real well.

I am hesitant to do anything but maintain the smog stuff as there has been some discussion here in the southern half of State of Jefferson of going to smog testing on motorcycles.

Being involved in emission testing from its on-set and involvement in the resulting state[NY] law suit against the morons within the EPA I can confidently state that emissions[tail-pipe] testing today is an absolute joke..Any state considering the testing of motorcycles will be done purely as a matter of additional income for that state.. OK,sorry, I'm done for now..

Well the southern end of the State of Jefferson is Northern California.  And, CA is looking for any revenue source that it can identify.

What I don't understand is why everyone ( seesm that way so far by picts) is they have to cut the tubes

why not save them if need em later ? 

my guess is it is a pita to get them off  in one piece ?

Only the bottom tube is hard to get off. When I did both our de-smogs I reused the "foot" as a block off plate for the bottom ports. I cut the tube off about 1/2" from the "foot", squeezed it flat then welded the flat part shut. Reinstalled the "foot" as a block off plate.

It was  actually a PITA to cut the one tube out, I used a Dremel and went thru about 8 disks. They break so easy. The front tube runs between the block and timing belt housing so I think you would have to take the timing assembly off to get it off in one piece which would be a bigger in the arse. The memory is fresh because I did it this weekend, my hands are still sore but it went well , started right up. It is pretty amazing how big a pile of stuff you have afterwards. I finally found 9/16 softplugs, bought vacuum plugs and a new petcock vacuum hose from Redeye (as well as the fuel disconnect he sells) and followed the Quexpress write up. I also reused the foot as Tropic described only I filled it with JB weld. I also procrastinated for two years but read everything I could on the subject. The airbox reinstall wasn't as bad as I feared, I used the method someone described where you "hog-tie" all of the hoses together towards the center and then cut the strings when you get it in. I took off the exhaust and don't regret it. Don't know why anyone would want to put it back on, so many potential leaks. It sounds like an inspection would not tell the difference between a stock Valk and a desmogged Valk, I will take my chances.
