Kind of interesting for those of us who went to high school in the 50s or 60's

and also those who went more recently.

You   should know that by today's standards none of us were supposed to ever make it.

Scenario                 1:
Jack goes quail hunting before school and then pulls into the school parking lot with his shotgun in his truck's gun rack.
1958 -  Vice Principal comes over, looks at Jack's shotgun, goes to his car and gets his shotgun to show Jack.
2012 -  School goes into lock down, FBI called, Jack hauled off to jail and never sees his truck or gun again. Counselors called in for traumatized students and teachers.

Scenario                 2:
Johnny and Mark get into a fist fight after school.
1958 -  Crowd gathers. Mark wins. Johnny and Mark shake hands and end up buddies.
2012 -  Police called and SWAT team arrives -- they arrest both Johnny and Mark. They are both charged with assault and both expelled even though Johnny started it.

Scenario                 3:
Jeffrey will not be still in class, he disrupts other students.
1958 -  Jeffrey sent to the Principal's office and given a good paddling by the Principal.  He then returns to class, sits still and does not disrupt class again.
2012 -  Jeffrey is given huge doses of Ritalin.   He becomes a zombie. He is then tested for ADD. The family gets extra money (SSI) from the government because Jeffrey has a disability.

Scenario                 4:
Billy breaks a window in his neighbor's car and his Dad gives him a whipping with his belt.
1958 -  Billy is more careful next time, grows up normal, goes to college and becomes a successful businessman.
2012 -  Billy's dad is arrested for child abuse, Billy is removed to foster care and joins a gang. The state psychologist is told by Billy's sister that she remembers being abused herself and their dad goes to prison. Billy's mom has an affair with the psychologist.

Scenario                 5:
Mark gets a headache and takes some aspirin to school.
1958 -  Mark shares his aspirin with the Principal out on the smoking dock.
2012 -  The police are called and Mark is expelled from school for drug violations. His car is then searched for drugs and weapons.

Scenario                 7:
Johnny takes apart leftover firecrackers from the Fourth of July, puts them in a model airplane paint bottle and blows up a red ant bed.
1958 -  Ants die.
2012  -  ATF, Homeland Security and the FBI are all called. Johnny is charged with domestic terrorism.  The FBI investigates his parents - and all siblings are removed from their home and all computers are confiscated.  Johnny's dad is placed on a terror watch list and is never allowed to fly again.

Scenario                 8:
Johnny falls while running during recess and scrapes his knee.   He is found crying by his teacher, Mary.  Mary hugs him to comfort him.
1958  -   In a short time, Johnny feels better and goes on playing.
2012 -  Mary is accused of being a sexual predator and loses her job. She faces 3 years in State Prison. Johnny undergoes 5 years of therapy.

This should hit every email inbox

to show how stupid we have become!

PS:     Please if you are going to bitch about this, please go else where to do it.
Thanks.    Peace    RJ.

I remember in 1972 taking my pocket knife to school so my shop teacher could sharpen it for me.

Sad but true. Stupid people making mountains out of mole hills.
Needs to go back to the way it was. The common sense way.

Troulble is, there's 150 million liberals out there that won't see anything wrong with the 2010 scenarios.
I can't help about the shape I'm in

I might not give the answer that you want me to

Yup RJ sounds like the small town school in East Texas I went to back in the 40s and 50s.  I even had a year in South East Colorado that I attended a one room one teacher all grades school. It was out on the prairie and miles from the closest town.  Cant believe the junk the kids have to endure these days.  Just saw where some kid was suspended for pointing his finger like a gun.  How stupid is it going to get before the pendulum swings back toward common sense?  Or is it already too late.

Heath it was still like the was you posted for 1958 in the early 80's when I got out of school.  I won a shotgun and three knives as prizes in FFA and was they were given to me in home room and I walked around in the halls with a shotgun all day that was in about 1980 before I drove to school. We all had guns in our cars as we hunted before and after school. If a teacher needed to cut something they would just ask one of us boys to borrow our knife, nothing was ever thought of it. I even had one teacher that used to trade knives with us :) like was said if there was a fist fight when it was over it was over no cops or parents or teachers it was settled between the two parties involved and that was that.

:cooldude: Your right on .I went to high school in the late 50s and got into fights and other stuff . You have a fight , take it outside and later you were friends.  I remember when my teacher brought to school his new car and had to show everyone, it was a 59 caddy ,WOW it was big. Teachers even had a sense of humor then . They could joke around and not get in trouble. I do miss those days.

Life is like a hot bath. It feels good while you're in it, but the longer you stay in, the more wrinkled you get.

Same for the 70 and 80's as the 50 and 60's.

Something went wrong in the 90's I believe.  :'(

Played mumbly(spelling??)peg in grade school. ALL the boys played it and we all had our own pocket knives. I'm amused at commercial places of business here that don't want me to carry my pocket knife.  :crazy2: Punch ups and knock downs came after school was out-3 P M.  ;D And most everybody knew who what when where and why!!  :-X In high school in metal shop used lathes welders(gas and electric)and drill presses and hammers etc etc. Wood shop we had MORE sharp tools-in fact we were taught HOW to sharpen saws chisels knives scrapers drill bits and anything that required a sharp edge. I remember a kid in high school his senior project was a WORKING replica of a bowie knife-that cursed thing was HUGE. It was kept out in the open so the other 3 high school grades could track his progress. With the(your description here)currently in charge I seriously doubt if a young person would be 'allowed' to turn out such a "weapon" of destruction!!  :2funny: RIDE SAFE.

In high school in the late seventies.  We had several bomb scares.  Everyone was evacuated and all were back in school in an hour.
I was worried they were going to find my stash of fire works in my locker.

Fire works are illegal here.  I got the stuff out of Texas and sold it.
A lot of gun powder there.   They didn't have bomb sniffing dogs here at that time.

Good post, RJ. It does seem like the more Big Government gets involved, the more they screw things up.

1971, Boys health class. Mr. Williams, gym teacher, (pretty cool guy). What would you expect to study in class in the late fall of the year? Hunter and GUN safety! I remember walking into class, Mr. Williams was still in the gym office. 4 different guns sat on his desk. Everyone passed by the desk, NO ONE touched anything, a couple of conversations started about scope type and other "hunting" topics. This was suburban Detroit  Mi. Not a rural area, But yet, everyone knew where their place was and what you do and do  not touch! Those scenerios are SO true!!

A very different world today!!!

I went to a very large high school in Connecticut in the early 70s... Every extracurricular activity you can imagine.  Was on the fencing team and the rifle team for all 4 years.   Been a member of the NRA since 12 years old.  On Wednesdays, I would walk to school with my .22 rifle over my shoulder in it's case, put it in my locker so we could go to the armory after school to shoot...  Try that in this day and age.  :(

Ride fast and take chances... uh, I mean... ride safe folks.

I graduated in 2003. When I started high school in 99 I was on the trap, rifle, and pistol teams. We would carry our guns in locked cases to our coaches room and that is where they stayed all day. After school we would take the short bus "for those that could drive would drive" out to the conservation club and shoot. Somewhere around our sophmore year the school decided that our clubs did not benefit them any and was taking our money and putting it towards football and basketball. We got shut down but by my junior year we were back without the help of the school, we were winning start and national shoots and the school wanted their name attatched to us and we told them no way in hell after how they treated us. Then senior year was so strict we couldnt have a knife on the property. Times have changed and im sure it is not for the better.

In the mid '40's I rode my bicycle though Ft. Wayne with a .22rifle slung over my shoulder on the way to squirrel hunting in the country.

After graduating from high school, I shot pistol in a league and we met in school basements to shoot.

Good News. There is still a Lutheran high school here that has a shooting range in the basement. Our club shoots there in the winter, believe it or not!

Try that in a public school!!!!

YoungPUP

I graduated in 2000 from Lowell Hs. We were allowed to have knives with a blade of no more than 3" & long barrel firearms were allowed to be kept in our cars.  Was not uncommon at all for anyone to pull out a knife when a teacher was opening mail etc and offer it to help.  Sad where things have gone in just 14 yrs.

I carried a pocket knife from about the fifth grade (1954) on and do so to this day.  Considered it a tool, not a weapon.  Now a kid cannot even have a sharp pencil.  Wait, do they still use pencils?

Willow

In my high school the limit was four inches on the pocket knife blade.

A word of advice.  When you're opening a package holding your knife by the blade and it slips out of your hand toward the floor handle first, let it go.

Perhaps they are wiser these days.  Maybe some of us that were allowed still can't properly handle a sharp knife.   :o

Momz

Guns and knives? Heck we used to drink a bottle of Schnapps or Gin in the parking lot, smoke a doobie and then go to homeroom.

At lunch, another doobie and or mescaline, just so we get through the rest of the school day.

Maybe drop another hit and a beer or two before going to my after school job.

Those were the good old days (if I remember correctly).

Sometimes we'd just get wasted, skip school and go to the beach or a park and drink/ get higher then go to work.

The cops never hassled us and if we got expelled,.....just another reason to get high!
