My friend with Spina Bifida needs your vote.

Please follow the link above and search for "Ted Pence". We met in school and have been good friends since. He wrecked his car a few months ago and is looking for a van for himself and his girlfriend Wendy, who also has Spina Bifida. You will see more details about them in the story that Ted's niece wrote to nominate them for the contest.

They both are very independent and have always found ways to make the cheap cars they could find work for them. The last car was a 99 Malibu that had a lift installed in the trunk so Ted could load Wendy's wheelchair after she slid into the passenger seat. With them being a little older now it is getting more difficult to use a normal car in this way. So they have been looking at Handicapped vans.

I have found them a few on Craigslist, but there is always some sort of catch to the ones I find that might be affordable enough. It is difficult to find one that is designed for two people that both have a disability. It needs to have a lowered floor so the doorway is high enough to roll in and the ramp or lift needs to be wide enough for Wendy's chair because it has power assist wheels. Then the driver's side needs to be equipped with hand controls for Ted....etc. All hard to find in a used vehicle.

I actually thought I had an affordable solution when I found a wheelchair lift online that was made for a standard Caravan. I bought it very reasonably and started looking for a cheap van. Well it turns out with a standard floor Caravan the doorway is not high enough for an adult to roll in. That particular lift was made for a child to use. So back to square one.

Then we found this contest to win a Mobility van. So I thought I would ask you guys to help out with the voting if you would. The rules state that you have to be in the top 10 percent at the end of the voting(May 9th), then a panel of judges picks a winner from those entrants.

You can vote once each day and you can get another vote each day by answering a question correctly about mobility awareness.

The only catch I see will be trying to pay the taxes on it if they actually win. But we'll cross that path if we get to it.

I figured out today that you have to do the extra question before you do the normal vote. If you do the normal vote first the link goes away. The answer for today's question is "true" on the question about steering controls.
