I've been a member of a sports facility for a number of years.  sometimes my wrist and arm get sore when I write the check for the dues.  :uglystupid2:  I do usually ride the bike over to drop them off though so this is Valkyrie related.

In my youth I use to build. Lifted for 7 years once. Took a year off and when I went back I tried to lift like I always had. Destroyed a shoulder in the process. Take it slow and easy at first. And if I might add a suggestion. If I had to to it all over again I wouldn't lift heavy. Lighter and higher reps would be the way to go especially in the older years.

What is this "gym" thing of which you speak?
I can't help about the shape I'm in
I can't sing, I ain't pretty and my legs are thin
But don't ask me what I think of you
I might not give the answer that you want me to

personally I'm doing machines only, and 20 reps and only 2 sets.

I'm tired but not sore.
on a side note I'm shocked at the number of people that have no idea how to properly lift weights. most of the gals do it mostly right, but the don't get the benefit of the negative. the guys on the other hand love to strain and flop, strain and flop.   the negative is your friend!

I'm not a large man, but at my prime I was very strong for my size. I hated gyms and the dorks that come with them. I hated working out next to the groaners. I hated it when the dropped the weights.

I saw a guy using straps with dumbbells, and making a ton of noise in the process (hey look at me). He was probably 220lbs. I at 170lbs walked up right next to him  (looking at him the whole time) unracked a set heavier than what he had, put a nice set without making any noise, stood up and racked them with ease and walked away.

To this day I don't think he knew what was even going on.

I would love to start lifting again, but kids, jobs, and bikes take up too much time.

Only my right arm gets exercise. Those 16 oz drafts can get heavy after awhile.

I've always been fairly active, but hadn't lifted since shortly after I remarried which was in '94 at age 55. About 18 mo. prior to my major attack in 2012 I had joined a small gym and went back to regular visits. As stated, high reps and reasonable weight have done the trick. And at my age, I'm not out to look like Arnold, just want to keep what I have in fairly good shape. The dr. told me one of the things that pulled me through the attack was my overall health and condition. Another guy 30 yrs. my jr. came in the same night, smoked so much the surgeon told me his skin smelled of tobacco. Plus it appeared his major exercise was pressing the buttons on the TV remote. He was about my size but extremely overweight, was just 44, never got any older.

Having said that, I'm not any where near the shape I was in at 55. But, when I look around the gym, the majority of those in their 20's & 30's is pretty pathetic. Talking to the trainer recently about working with him for a month or two and doing it in concert with another person my age. He told me he doesn't have anyone my age that is in my condition, only persons close would be a couple guys about 55-60. Now that made my day, even though I'm still heavier than I want to be. I have a grandson in Green Bay that is always flexing for me when we're on Skype and I always have to go along with it. Can't wait to arm wrestle him this summer, he'll be 17 and young Robert is in for a surprise. He's a great kid and fun to mess with.

The plonkers that cheat by swaying around look so ridiculous.

Doing bar dumbell curls and simply rocking back and forth, so silly.

I love doing Arnold single hand bicep curls with 100lbs next to these twits. And that's way down from my best 30 years ago. Growing older  sucks  >:(

I stabalise myseilf with the passive hand flat on a bench.

Work up to it. Get the muscles heated up.

2 20 lb dumbells to start.

one in each hand  ;D

Do 6 reps lifting to the across the body to the opposite shoulder.
6 reps lifting up to same side shoulder
6 reps lifting up to same side shoulder and twisting the wrist inwards 90 degrees at the top.

Repeat 3 times.

Then keeping a really flat back with passive hand flat on bench.

12 each side 45lbs Arnold curl

Then 12 each side 65lbs Arnold curl

Then 10 each side 85lbs Arnold curl

Then 10 each side 100lbs Arnold curl

Then 12 each side 65lbs Arnold curl

Then 12 each side 45lbs Arnold curl

Then call for medics

On an off day I can only do about 6 100lb Arnold bicep curl

On a good day I then do 21's with a 35, 45 and 75lb bicep curl bar.

21's Bicep Curl

..

Nearly forgot.

On a REALLY good day

Then seated with a 20lb bicep curl bar.

Good straight back and no upper body sway cheating.

Upper arm vertical. Lower arm at 90 degrees bang out 25 reps lifting the bar up to chin height as fast as you can.

3 sets.

Don't hit yourself in the lip. It stings and you'll be talking with a lisp for a coupla days.  :D

When standing doing the first sets above I have a bench against my calves so I can make sure I'm not swaying my body thereby cheating.

I have worked out in one form or another since I was a teenager.   Swam my way thru High School and College.   Not World Class, but got my fair share of first places.   Lifting weights during my swimming time was not to be done, my how times have changed.   I have/do workout with weights 4 time a week, plus do quiet a bit of walking.  This has been going on since my mid 40's, long time ago.  No I am not a candidate for body builder of the year, nor do I ever want to be.   No impressive lifts.   Just move iron.  some lifts are high in reps, some are not.

I just move iron to keep what muscle mass I have, keep strong enough to keep my Valk upright, and enjoy life.

I also enjoy watching folks who think they are really moving iron with poor form.   Wonder how bad they are hurting their backs.  I have seen my share of them over the last 30 years.

We are such strangers that I still have to call it going to the "James".

cookiedough

take it slow the first few months, not just weeks.  do very light weights and higher reps although I think reps of over 15-20 are not needed ever.  3 sets of each should be sufficient.  I have not lifted weights in over 20 years when in high school being the strongest in my dinky school at the time which really isn't saying much really.  Everytime you start off, or at least for me, I developed by mostly doing bench presses free weights bruises under my shoulder blades.  Definitely don't do free weights like squats right away unless you really want to hurt yourself and pull a butt muscle or two (don't ask me how I know).

Right now I'm a big wimp am sure as compared to most high school kids lifting weights now and no way could I get back in the condition I was in high school at about 70 lbs. over ideal weight now.
