thinking about going to the outer banks of nc. anyone been? is it a good place to vac? I have heard that when the tide goes out it goes out for miles. Is this true and if so how deep is the water just off the beach at high tide. Thinking about staying at the lighthouse view motel. What ya think? thanks for any info or advice.

Jess from VA

I have little advice, other than this.

Do not buy nonrefundable tickets/reservations far in advance.  When the big storms come in, you do not want to be there. Have friends that go every year... spectacular is what I hear.

We went there for a number of years. Used to rent a house for a week usually during early Sept. . There is not too much to do or see there except eat, drink, fish, relax, wander around,  and be merry. Kill Devil is nice with a good aviation museum along with a nice GA airport in Dare County if you're so inclined. I never felt the tides there were too extreme.

Not true about the tides. Depth varies, depending on the beach.
We like MM 14 or so, turn left at the Dairy Queen!

It's about an hour ride from my house to Nags Head. We go a lot when company comes.

If taking kids, I recommend Kure Beach, below Wilmington, NC.

FYI, Dare County leads the state in DUI arrests.

PM me if you ride near here, I'm always up for an excuse to ride.....

Sugar wants to go to the beach this year, (said she's NOT camping on the S. Toe River this time) &
I've always wanted to ride the Outer Banks. Any suggestions on places to stay that wont break the bank. (Camping was pretty much free but......................)
We won't have any kids to concern our selves with.
Thanks for any info.
Peace, Whiskey.

Thanks for the info. I don't drink so that leaves out one of the things to do. The girlfriend likes to shop so don't know if that leaves out another. We were looking at going in sept. but that may be hurricane season :o oh well.

There are places to park along Hwy 12 north. It's possible to find beaches with no one on. Great for walking. I did that back in '93. Stayed on Hatteras for nearly 2 weeks until I got kicked off cause of Hurricane Emilys approach.

Didn't pay my bill. It stuck in my mind for years.

Went back 4 years later and same owner so I paid what I owed. The owner sat there saying over and over "I don't believe it. No one has ever done anything like that".
