Earthquake!

I thought I'd share this with you guys because this is our weather here in SoCal. Instead of spring, summer, fall and winter, our seasons are Earthquakes, Mudslides, Fires and Riots. This quake kicked the hell out of us, it wasn't a big quake by SoCal standards but because of its proximity, less than 10 miles it shook the crap out of my house.

What was really fun is Damon (Misfit) got to experience it, though he was in Colorado at the time he heard all hell break loose, as he was on the phone with me in a way he witnessed the roar and it is a roar as the house shakes so violently and he heard the dogs go nuts. My pre-civil war and Grand Father clocks that we haven't wound or ran in years set to running.
Because it was the Puente Hills thrust fault the quake was up and down instead of side to side although after the quake the earth swayed for about another 2 minutes it felt exactly like sitting on a surfboard as the swells go by, awesome.



For those who are still reading this post the local news: The earthquake struck at about 9:09 p.m. and was preceded by two foreshocks registering at magnitude-3.6 and magnitude-2.1. Nearly 40 people spent the night at a Red Cross shelter at the La Habra Community Center in Fullerton, however, 25 homes were red-tagged after the earthquake.

Preliminary data suggest Friday night's 5.1 magnitude earthquake occurred near the Puente Hills thrust fault, which stretches from the San Gabriel Valley to downtown Los Angeles and caused the 1987 Whittier Narrows earthquake, USGS seismologist Lucy Jones said. "It's a place where we've had a lot of earthquakes in the past," she said. The 5.9 Whittier Narrows quake killed eight people and caused $360 million in damage.

"We felt a really good jolt. It was a long rumble and it just didn't feel like it would end," he told The Associated Press by phone. "Right in the beginning it shook really hard, so it was a little unnerving. People got quiet and started bracing themselves by holding on to each other. It was a little scary."

Reports of natural gas leaks began flooding in to officials once the shaking stopped, Los Angeles County Fire Department Dispatch Supervisor Ed Pickett said Friday. Southern California Edison officials reported about 2,000 customers were without power late Friday as a result of the earthquake.

Some people ask why I moved to Iowa after I retired.

Now, you know why, I hate those firkin earthquakes.

Especially if they wake you up at night to dishes rattling and things falling on the floor.

I happened to had been test riding my Valk now that the 6 to 6's are installed.
So, when it happened I thought it was the rumble of the pipes. I am 8 miles from downtown LA.
Didn't feel a thing.  Found out about it later in the news. Bummer, I missed it.

There are folks across the street visiting from back east. They arrived three days ago for a two week stay.
They were dinning at a restaurant when the quake struck.. ??? Short vacation. This morning they scrammed to the airport.

Didn't feel it here much in Moreno Valley, east of Riverside. My brother told me a story about a fellow he was talking to about tornado's while living in Ohio. He said at least you have some warning and can take cover. My brother said that he as lived in SoCal all his life and has never even been inconvenience by an earth quake. I haven't either for that matter and I think more people have been killed in the US by tornado's than earth quakes. I may be wrong but I'm sure someone out there has the facts.

Was there an earthquake? I live in Whittier and hardly felt a thing. Miriam is now a true Californian, she has been through her first earthquake and she didn't like it too much. I have been here all my life and remember all of them and to me it's no big deal.

We felt it last night up in the High Desert. We turned on the news for about 10 minutes while the news

people went bonkers. Turned off the news and went to bed. Been there done that.

  definitely felt it here in Rancho Mirage about 120 miles east of LA. gentle shaking that lasted a while.

 I lived I bay area when the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake occurred.  I was at work and pretty violent shaking.  I got down on my knees in bathroom.  knocked our water heater off in garage (fortunately on a hill so all water ran out down hill), all items in kitchen out on floor,  7' china hutch crashed down.  neighbor lost chimney.

 and now I live a few miles from San Andreas fault.  exciting.

That was cool Oz. It was as close as I have ever come to experiencing an earthquake. It was exciting hearing you explain all that was happening at the time with all of the lights swaying and stuff shifting around. Glad your property didn't sustain any damage. The dogs were sure fired up.

I'd rather deal with our hurricanes thank you very much.  Plenty of warning and I can always get out of the way. 

Eathquakes....ya never know.

We just deal with the tornadoes here, not as much warning as a hurricane but a lot more than an earthquake.

gee, i wish our winters were as long as those earthquakes.  i can handle 30 seconds of "what da fu*@!!" it's the 6 months of steering out the window, watching the streets and mail boxes disapear under frozen sheets of ice that i can't stand!!

Just read this morning that there have been some 30 plus small earth quakes since March 20th around the Mtn Hood area (Northern Oregon).   Maybe the mountain is going to wake up again.

On a daily basis, there are hundreds of earthquakes in California. We don't hear about them nor do we feel them. They are too low on the R scale.
