Not all trigger/timing wheels are created equal (long)

I installed a 6 degree trigger wheel on my 98 Standard a couple of years ago.  Bought it online, don't know what brand but it worked great, no issues.  I seemingly had all the benefits that were talked about on this board i.e higher gas mileage, more low end power, more butt dyno  .

I had a Dyna 3000 on hand and started reading about installing the Dyna with the 6 degree wheel and the settings that would be required.  It seemed to be a simple and effective solution that would incorporate the best of the trigger wheel and the Dyna by using the retard function to limit the total advance at higher revs.

So, I installed the Dyna and tried to start my bike.  No luck.  The LED would flash once when the key was turned on, but would not flash when cranking the engine.  Well, the instructions say there is either a slow crank (i.e. bad battery) or the factory pickups are not reading properly.

I had already noticed it was harder to start the Valk recently and was planning on buying a new battery, so I did.  OEM Yuasa.  Reinstalled the Dyna and still no start.

I ended up pulling the timing belt cover and removing the trigger wheel to take a look.  Sure enough, comparing the aftermarket wheel to the OEM wheel the tabs were rounded off instead of square.

Reinstalled the OEM and the Dyna and started her up on setting 1 (supposedly stock advance curve).  All is well.  Changed the setting to 5 to get the maximum advance for a stock bike and WOW!!  That is what I was looking for!  I hope to have the performance of the trigger wheel without the dead spots at higher rpm.

Perhaps I will start looking for an Air Lake 6 degree wheel that is more compatible with the Dyna but for now I plan on leaving as is.  Of course I will carry the OEM ICM in my saddlebag!

I probably should not ask you. You allready cost me plenty, I got the King Big Boy anfter sitting on your bike. My ride home was a lot more comfortable.

Brian, great to meet you and Regina at Inzane!  Sorry that I cost you some bucks but I could tell by your size you would like the King Big Boy better   .  I bet your next purchase will be some Longhorn offsets   .

I can't tell you if the Dyna is worth it yet, just got it up and running today.  Keeping the stock ICM just in case.  It only takes about 5 minutes to change out.  I'll let you know though!

BTW I added some more bling since Inzane so you need to keep up!!  I bought a chrome backrest insert from Big Mike and also added some velocity stacks   .  Can't get enough safety chrome.
