i have a 99 valk. that has had that annoying "POP" on deceleration since I bought it, its only on the right side and only on deceleration. I have tried every fix posted on the forum over the years, only to have it return.

I had lunch with damon from colo. spgs. a few days ago and we discussed the problem, I had decided it was being caused by dry rot to the little hoses that go from the anti backfire valves to the vaccum side of the carbs. these are the little 3 inch hoses you can see on the left sides of your carbs.
the plastic valve the top of the hose is hooked to is the anti backfire valve.

today I got an iced tea, and armed with a good pair of skinny forceps, and a lot of patience, I took all of them off and replaced them with new hose. not a real hard job if you hold your mouth just right and take your time. a drop of oil in each side of the hose really helps get them on.

took a ride just now and guess what ? no more popping, not at all, not ridden hard or easy, hot or cold, just no more popping at all.

at least in my case the problem is finally solved. these hoses have no clamps on them and are tucked up where all the heat and wind hits them, all 6 were cracked on the ends.

Cool... I stared at those tiny hoses a few times... glad you found it to be "doable"
to replace them...

I'm gonna give that a gander!  Pop is on left side for me.
"No, that's not a car motor..Yes, Honda made them that way...."

Backfire is generally from a vacuum leak causing a too-lean condition.  Desmogging will fix the leaks from those hoses permanently.  Frankly I think it sounds cool.  Reminds me of a hot rod. Sounds powerful.

But you don't want to desmog away the little hoses on the cut valves...

i was told to use a little isopropyl alcohol when you slip a hose onto metal.  when the alcohol dries it doesn't leave a residue on the metal preventing them from slipping around.  makes a better seal.

anyone else ever hear that suggestions?  haven't done (or looked) at my hoses, but if it works i'll be doing mine ASAP 'cause i can't stand that "popping" noise!!

No, I'm not doing the de-smog.  Don't like messing with something that's "suppose" to be there......

let me know if your fuel milage goes up any.

it may suppose to be there for air pollution concerns ...  :)
but it doesn't need to be there and is a source of air leak problems ...  :-\
de smog will remove many air leak concerns ... no ?    ???

Did it do anything to help that annoying hesitation right off idle? I did the desmog and the pop still there, mostly right side so, I will replace thosel little devils you speak of.

And if the hoses don't get it, you might have loose nuts holding your exhaust on. After putting new gaskets in, they'll probably need retightening in a hundred miles or so. Mine was popping after putting Marks exhaust on and running them a while. Retightened them and the pop is gone.

It's been awhile but I'm pretty sure the only black rubber hose I still have under the airbox is the vacuum line from #6 to the petcock, and the fuel lines.  The others - all gone and not going to crack and leak.

Each of our carburetors has a "cut valve" on it, with a little piece (one or
one and a half inch) of tubing connecting the cut valve to a nipple
on each carb... if the little tubes weren't there it would be bad...

Different but same. Ever seen those sling-shots with the hollow rubber tubes? We used to call them "Wrist Rockets". Well, if you dip the ends of the tubes in some iso alcohol they slide right on! Let set overnight & you're good to go. The broken ends would hafta be cut off next time.
