Local dealer matches internet pricing...

After the last 80 miles of my return trip from InZane being done on a trailer, I've started getting ready for the repair...

Went to 'PartsFiche' on line and got all the part numbers for everything necessary to replace my broken U-Joint (all the clips, spring, oil seal... associated with the drive shaft).  Then, I contacted my local Honda dealer (Action Power Sports, in Waukesha WI), and asked them to check availability.

He looked, and said he could have everything 'next day'.

He asked for an email, with everything I needed, and a link to the prices I found.  I did that Wednesday morning, and picked up my parts yesterday.

Without the price match, my bill would have been $218.96...  After, it was $159.06, including tax    That's a savings of $67.62...

This dealer has price matched on other parts and tires, in the past, but the moral of the story is 'It dosen't hurt to ask'

My local dealer (Rosenau Powersports, Dearborn Hts., MI) always beats the online parts retailors. Plus they have parts deliveries on Wednesdays, so you can pick up your parts on Thursdays.

I'd recommend getting to know your local dealer's parts department counter persons and always ask for discounts (AMA member 15%). I won't let them work on my bike though.

.....I ordered a new timing belt from the "new" HDL on Monday. Guy said it
would "probably" be here Wednesday...Thursday at  the latest. Here it is

I know that I'm a bit of a cynic and most don't think of it this way, but doing business with someone who will match prices is like having the business say to you, "I'm willing to overcharge you unless and until you catch me by showing me someone else that will overcharge you less and then I'll come down to the price I can really sell to you for."

I'd be inclined to do business with the one who presented the lower price first off.

I am glad it worked out for you, Steve.  Oh, and I do understand my perspective is not completely correct in that some businesses have to pay for having a brick and mortar site available.

Glad you pointed that out...  My guy said he wasn't making much on my sale, but it got me in the store    Many of the internet vendors are 'middle men', and have nothing in stock (thus the long wait).  I couldn't have gotten my parts any faster (24 hours) no matter where I went.

He said that they do that because once a customer comes in, the 'may' purchase something they had not intended to buy...  Kinda like that Black F6B that I sat on while I was there

I usually go to the same dealership that Momz was talking about. A little while ago I asked the guy at the counter about I/s carb springs. He gave me a price of $4.65 each which with tax comes to almost $30 after tax. I told him I could get them online for about $15, he went back on his computer and came up with a new price of $16 and some change. They lost some profit on it, but they know that if they don't compete they will lose out to the online stores.

I have loyalty to small specialty shops, like gun stores.  I have loyalty to my lead tech, and tip him whenever I take him work, but not the dealer.  I deal directly with the tech, not the dealer and not the service mgr (who is OK).  The tech is always pleased I bring all the right parts with me I need, they are almost never in stock.

I used to price match with HDL all the time, because I always got good quick service, and the right parts (unlike having to deal with the seller at the cheapest price I could find for different things all over creation, if there was a problem).  With HDL, you had recourse if there was a problem.  I have pretty much given up on HDL now.... we'll see next time I need OE parts.

Yeah, it does leave me a bit torn on my viewpoint, but by telling you he didn't make much on your purchase, he was telling you he was willing to make about $70 on your purchase if you hadn't caught him on it.

It is a good business strategy for the exact reason he quoted to you.
