Thanks to Dan Meyer and his tech sessions at the last two Inzanes, I decided I could do this. So far, no major snags. Even popped the pumpkin and shaft back on with no problem thanks to the "lift the swingarm and shake" technique. Looks like I should have ordered a damper set. Local stealer has none, claims the closest are in Michigan. I'll order a set before the next tire change. Good time to install the new shock bushings I have too. Hopefully the tire gets put on tomorrow, then it's re-assemble and start on the front wheel!

Those gears look mighty good to me.  Nice to see a lot of grease in there and no rust.

Puts the mind at ease now just knowing that it is good to go.

just remember how greasy they was..   grease is cheaper then parts .. cover them parts well .. grease rags are cheap parts anit..    nice to do you own work you know its right

They look pretty good but doesn't it look like there is some abnormal wear on the drive hub close to the oring? Or maybe it's my old eyes and monitor.

The grease that was in there was kinda dry and real hard to remove. Not sure about those drive splines. I kinda see what ya mean but they're all the same and it looks to me like that's how they were cut, not worn to that shape. Might be lint from the q-tips too...

HOLY MOTHER OF CHEESE! What a wrestling match it was getting the wheel back on. I have even MORE respect and admiration for Dan Meyer. Putting that wheel back on, holding everything together while getting shaft, spacer, and brakes lined up is a job and a half. However, after 3 rounds the score stands: Biguglyman 1, Valkyrie 0. A win is a win...now on to the front wheel!

I agree with Meathead, there is a little wear.  Those teeth were born looking the same on both sides.   Shouldn't be a problem as long as you keep good grease in there.  Ive seen much worse put back together and work fine.  Good Job!

Today's discovery: the front wheel is much easier to take off and put back on. Here's a few more pics to document my "vacation"...

And although there is still a bit of groove left, I replaced pads while I had the front wheel off:



Here's the pile of old parts, as well as my caliper piston compression tool... oh, and the speedo works now with the new gear:



All in all: two days out in the garage, two new tires, rear end maintenance done (including pinion cup and shaft), new shock bushings, new air filter, new front pads, new speedo gear, and discovered my petcock needs a rebuild...but that's a job for another day.

I'm fixing to dovalve stems (steel) and the spline lube on 2 valks. Wish me well.

That air filter appears to be a K&N... clean/wash, oil and re-install it's reusable. Good Job
