CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) -

Motorists traveling in Wyoming will soon be able to go a little faster on certain stretches of interstate highways.

On Tuesday, Wyoming Department of Transportation crews will begin changing speed limit signs along three sections of Interstates 25, 80 and 90 to 80 mph.

The higher speed limit will not be the entire length of the highways, but only in areas where WYDOT has deemed it safe.

The 80 mph limit will be posted along a total of 268 miles of I-25, 116 miles on I-80 and 104 miles of I-90.

The 75 mph speed limit will remain in force until the new 80 mph signs are in place.

WYDOT hopes to complete sign changeover work by the beginning of the Fourth of July holiday weekend.

Happy riding

There are gonna be some gas stations in Wyoming that will be seeing more motorcyclists.

Did Wyoming ever have areas, that had no speed limit, or was that Montana?

You're late Wy., we've had 80MPH speed limits in The Great State of Texas for some years now, between San Antonio and El Paso. We now have an 85 MPH toll road between George Town and San Antonio. The first is for something over 4-500 miles of high speed riding and plenty of gas stations to boot.
Not rub it into Wyoming, but we have Farm to Market roads with 75MPH speed limits.

If you are riding  and it is a must that you keep your eyes on the road, you are riding too fast.

Back in "the day",  Nevada had R&P speed limit.  I was tooling along in my Chevy deuce coupe at 140 and had a state trooper pull up alongside, from behind.  Surprised me, didn't expect anybody from behind.  He wagged his finger at me and pulled away like I had the brakes on.  Don't remember what he was driving, but I would have liked to peek under the hood.

that's pretty darn fast.

Pretty much any vehicle over 80 mph will greatly reduce mpg

I'm a wimp, only been over 100 mph only twice in my life and both over 20 years ago when  young and foolish.

There is something just warm and fuzzy about being able to legally
tool along at 75 plus on a 2 lane in the panhandle of Texas.  If you are doing 80 in a Valk its really 75 anyway as the speedo reads high.   Riding with Bonzo (me on the calibrated speedo of the police bike) I saw the Valk at speed is at LEAST 5-7 high

Thanks for the information, I did not know R& P speed limits existed in Nevada as well as Montana

Our state government caved to pressure from the fed for highway money years ago. :tickedoff:  :tickedoff:
but as long as your not acting like a moron the state troopers will leave ya alone. I run 80-85 in the cage and bike all the time even on two lane highways. only  performance award I have gotten was in town 49 in a 35 OOPs cost me $60.

I did get failure to conserve energy ticket in the early 90's they cost five bucks and payed the trooper. thats what the used to give you back then instead of speeding tickets. I think if over 90mph they would write for wreckless and speeding under that just the $5 ticket. I used to keep a five in the glove box just for that. I wonder how many troopers pulled someone over for lunch money?? :2funny:

R&P was the rule in Kansas when I was a little kid, not many cars would go that fast without breaking down.  I remember my dad rebuilding the motor in his 49 Ford flat head several times.  Mom was not happy.  ;D  Hoser

Montana had R&P speed way back.  I was there in the middle 60's and that is what was there then and it had been that way for decades.  Day time R&P, Nighttime was another matter.  Lot slower.

Lots of places have 70 or 75 on two lanes in the west, except for Oregon.  As far as WY getting 80 mph speeds, most folks are driving 84 mph or so now  (speed before they pull you over), they are just trying to make it legal.  I lived there for 22 years and drove I-80 a lot.

Why is that, I have never ridden a Japanese bike that the speedo was not off about 10% to the high

side?

The Harley has a reputation of being dead on.

Are the German bikes off as well?

If so why?

That has always bothered me, the speedo discrepancy.

I know the Japanese can build accurate equipment. They are all off to the high side?

Doesn't the Japanese build the speedos for the harleys?

While stationed at Havre AFB, Mt (75-77) another enlisted and I had to go to Great Falls for a Physical. We started out in  a military sedan but only got a few miles down the road when we got a strong smell of hot oil. Afraid to drive that vehicle 300 miles round trip I took it back to the motor pool and went home an got my 240Z and hit the road, leaving an hour late. I put the petal to metal and made the trip in 55 minutes. Even had a trooper follow me for about ten miles, I guess he didn't think I was driving too crazy, lol.... I loved that car..but sold it before heading to Germany.

The Japanese have long built in a 5% error into all speedos simply because the fines for importing bikes into the US with bad (incorrect the other way) speedos is huge.... and maybe per bike.

The only problem I have with high speed limits is the quality of the drivers.
Most roads were built even in the 50s for 80 MPH traffic. People just can't seem to handle those speeds.
Maybe though, we have just gone to the metric system and no one has bothered to tell us about it.

cookiedough

speaking of metric system and speedos' being set too high about 5 mph,  it also applies to my Kymco scooter made in Taiwan, not Japan.  Biggest issue for me is the kmh is the LARGE numbers on speedo that I can read vs. the very tiny mph in very fine print below.  Makes me smile seeing 120 kmh which is around 75 mph which I routinely drive day to day but since the speedo is set about 8-10 mph too high according to my hand held GPS I have held onto while driving at that speed, is really only around 65 mph.  Not sure I would like going 120 mph on my scooter let alone over 75 mph which is my top speed floored.   People may laugh at a 280lb. guy on a 249cc scooter, but I routinely catch up to most of them on the 55 mph hwy. usually passing some as well.   I just be careful who I can pass since they can easily speed up to 75 mph and I would be toast if oncoming traffic is coming my way which I have experienced once.

The wife says the first time I get a ticket for speeding on the scooter is the day I have to sell it.  So,  I'm glad my speedo is set near 10 mph too high as well as my Valk being around 5 mph since I daily drive 65 to near 70 mph shown on the Valk speedometer knowing it is at or below 65 mph in a 55 mph zone.  Most police officers do not stop someone in a 55 mph zone unless going 65 mph or over that since I think 99% of drivers do 63 mph all day long in a 55 mph zone with no issues being pulled over.  I have driven that speed at 63 mph in my vehicles I know are no more than 1 mph off and never been pulled over for speeding seeing 100's of police officers on the road.

BobB

I celebrated my independence today on a short ride by doing the ton.  To make sure, I pushed it up to 115 indicated in a 55 zone.  Please keep this quiet.

MP

The law mandates stiff fines for them if they read low.  So, to account for tire differences, etc., they set them slightly high.
Thank Big Brother.

I was young enough to enjoy the r&p in Montana. Had a sports car that liked 140 mph. Now I enjoy the 85 limit in parts of Utah and Idaho. Older and slower...  ;)
