I'm 6'3" and 250lbs.  According to the Mayo clinic my BMI is 31.2 and I am obese   :tickedoff:!  In order for me to be in the "normal" range I would have to get under 200lbs.  I went on a workout kick maybe 8 years ago and got down to 205 with 10% body fat and my abs were showing.  People thought I was sick because I was so skinny and I had bones sticking out.  That chart is not for me.  I need to lose 20-25 lbs to be where I want to be.
The problem with Socialists is they eventually run out of other people's money to spend!

Some people are too stupid to realize how ignorant they are.

Soon, you'll have to meet BMI, glucose, BP, and cholesterol numbers of a 20 year-old athlete to get medical insurance.

My company will hit ya with a $2400 per year fine if you  don't meet the specs...

The company that I last worked at started doing that in 2006. After one year if your BMI did not meet their prescribed standards, you were refused insurance.

I was "let go" due to chronic medical issues. It hurt my pride but, "to every thing there is a reason, turn, turn, turn". God has looked out for me, and I've had many more issues, but I'm still here. And I've lost more than 60 pounds in the last three months.

WHAT IF, the new standard in BMI makes getting insurance impossible because of price or uninsurability so under the law you are in violation of not having insurance. So since you make to much money and cant get a subsidy, so you get fined. Still cannot afford insurance, still the same BMI, now paying a fine what do you do. The easy thing that the insurance co's could do would be change the unrealistic numbers or give a true BMI test that accurately reflects the true BMI of your body. Just a thought.  :D

same here same height and age from 280 to 210 lbs. was only a few points difference around 40. I find it hard to believe 5'10" and only 210 lbs. is obese or almost obese.  Is there a category for NEAR DEAD?

I think these BMI guidelines are made up by the health care insurance companies so they rake in the money calling everyone darn near overweight and obese thus lining their own pockets.

Don't care what anyone says,  the entire health care system is a scam when it comes to billing and basically everything.

My wife's employer charges a huge amount extra if a smoker for health insurance and if it ever comes to have a BMI decide our premiums or other factors in terms of wellness,  it will be the end of health insurance in America because almost right now no one can afford it the way it is and what you do get is overpriced if don't use it.

This BMI chart is full of crap.  It takes no account of muscle.  Even when I was on active duty in Special Ops.  I was NOT overweight then at all.  I weighed 165.  This chart puts me as overweight at 165.  I recently lost between 10 and 15 lbs and now weigh 180.  I can wear most of my clothes from military days and I am happy with my size, weight, blood pressure and the way I feel.  Yes I could agree that 5-10 more lbs would be realistic to lose.

Who doesn't have 5-10 extra lbs hanging around.....This thing says I need to be at 160....There is no way on Gods green apple I am going to lose 20 more lbs.

Gryphon Rider

I think there is a lot of self-delusion going on here.  There is a difference between normal and healthy.  The US has the second highest average BMI in the world, second only to Kuwait.  I know I would be way healthier if I dropped from 200 to 173 to get me into the healthy category for my 5'10".  That would still be 18 pounds more muscle than when I got married, and I didn't have sunken eye sockets then.

I was on the road the last few days and did not respond to this earlier since I hate trying to type on a phone.

The average numbers that you are seeing are what BC&BS tried to shove up my a$$ 2 years ago and then drop my coverage last year. At 5'10", 225 lbs and 58 years young the insurance charts say I am obese. Okay, I work in a physical occupation, go to the gym at least 5 times over a two week period (every other day) where I spend 30 min on weight machines, 45 min on the elliptical, then another 20 min or so swimming laps. When I started this program two years ago I weighed in at 235, went all the way down to 215 before the muscle mass started started to add weight back. I was 6' even when I was 45, before I had 3 vertebrae fused and a total of 7 knee surgeries over the years since. No chart will take this into account.

I now go to a M.D. for a BMI reading to turn over to the insurance (protection racketeer) companies. When I was told this year that if I did not go to the "health fair" to be evaluated by the same people that tried to deny me insurance last year, I asked the insurance hack if he would like to do lunch with my attorney while I shop all my coverages. A medical report suddenly is good again.

I would never suggest that I couldn't be healthier. But since even with bad wheels I routinely out produce 20 something kids (and usually end up firing them) I wonder what the racketeers......er, insurance industry is up to.

By the way, I am self employed and have to pay 100% for my insurance, all of it, including liability. workers comp, unemployment (2 that I cannot claim), self employment, as well as all the other insurances/taxes that we all carry/pay. In over 30 years of carrying health insurance both as an employee and as employer, I have met my deductible only twice as a family and you wonder why I might think required insurance is a scam. :tickedoff:

Thinks I'll stick mine on my dogs collar every night.

To answer the original question: My BMI is 30, I'm 6' tall at 221 lbs and 55 years old. 44 inch chest and 34 inch waist. I could maybe drop 20 lbs but that only brings it down to a 27-28. I don't put much stock in it but my HR department does.

Can't argue with that :cooldude:

As has been previously stated, using the straight math formula is not very accurate. That way I am 27.9, but using a body composition monitor that sends a small electric current through your body when you grip it, you get a much more accurate reading that takes into account the fact that muscle mass is denser than fat.  Using that method I measure 23.1. I check it every 6 months at the gym to make sure my workout routine is working.

there are a lot of holes in this. my score was 34.5. I am 66 years old, retired from the militaty and went on to retire from law enforcement, I have been working out all my life because of what I did for a living. I weigh 240 pounds, have a 38 inch waist, wear a size 52 jacket in an athlete cut because I have 18 inch biceps. age, weight, and lifestyle may mean something if you are fat, but these figures do not take into account someone who is in top shape. I believe riding bikes keeps one in good shape. the mental ability to ride and react in bad situations keeps your mind sharp, and where your mind goes your body follows. at 66 I can ride 900 miles a day across the desert, I take one pill a day for heartburn and otherwise am in top shape. never listen to things like this, if you ride you are probably in pretty fair shape, if you sit all day and eat cookies, well your probably not.

So we can see with some of the stories and the school kids that this is being used as a reason for charging more for insurance, declining insurance, stopping employment and trying to unjustly motivate people to do something about, in most cases nonexistent weight problems. This negative unjust motivation generally puts a negative feeling on those who's weight is normal and creates more eating disorders. So why isn't their a reasonable standard instead of trying to push a bad standard on people and brainwashing them that their fat. We can go to the moon, develop self driving cars, build tall buildings but we cannot have a true BMI standard. So who is behind pushing this and who is the one telling kids that they are fat and making them cry and for what reason? Naw nothing to see here move along folks, its just one crazy person doing this.  :2funny: But just remember next time you go for your physical to declare if you have guns in the house also.

Robert, I don't think there is any denying that as a whole we are getting fatter. This BMI test is just a quick check to see where you are at. There are definitely more accurate tests. BUT we are getting fatter, we can stick our head in the sand, we can blame somebody else, we can dream up conspiracy theories BUT we are getting fatter. (Myself included)

not to seem paranoid, but this all sounds like the insurance companies again. I got a thing in the mail from state farm telling me I could save money if I had onstar installed in my vehicles so the insurance company could keep track of how many power starts and hard brakings I made and adjust my rates accordingly. I understand several ins. companies have gone to similar systems. I disabled onstar in my pickup, suv, and corvette after my service manager asked me how it felt to go 150 mph in my corvette, he knew it because onstar told him, it also told him where I was out on old hwy 50 in Nevada when I did it. too intrusive for me guys.

Your waist-to-hip ratio can be more accurate and telling than BMI for those with increased muscle mass such as athletes. This link http://www.bmi-calculator.net/waist-to-hip-ratio-calculator/waist-circumference.php has the calculator and explains how to measure it, what it means and what you can do about it.

I agree. Nobody takes the BMI as a serious indication of health any longer and haven't for year. It is however a guideline.

I'm 6' and in good shape but weigh 225. According to the BMI calculator that puts me at a 30.1 and on the border of obese. In order to be in the "normal" range, I'd have to lose 50 POUNDS!
