here is an app to calculate.  I am predicting more than half of VRCC is over 25.  Good thing we have a lot of power.

28.7 :tickedoff:. Would it be OK to increase the power on the bike instead of going on a diet? :2funny:

I re ran the calculation with my old weight, and as of October of 2013 my BMI was 37... Little more accurate I suspect for Valkyrie riders in general... :)

Its not accurate at all, its a average and if you have muscle or big bones or a stocky build it will be way off. I have never been inside these measurements even when I was weight lifting and had a true measured bmi of 18. Some weight lifters will have a bmi of 16 just like some athletes but with this average they could be considered bmi of 25.

have to agree with that Robert.  I am big, 6'4" muscular, 62 yo old guy so maybe not accurate.  ;D  but just curious and thinking that we are old, fat f..cks.

I tell you start to get out and exercise again and you'll find out real quick just how far off you are.  :2funny: I have started back at the gym and cardio in the am and the first couple of days were not pretty.  ;D I have truly missed it and am happy I am getting back but boy I had forgotten just how much I hate doing legs. :o It's hot down here in S Fla so at 5:30 am is the only time to start to do cardio outside I have never liked the running machines in the gym. Besides I melt really easy and am embarrassed when I have to clean the machine after using it. Now you got me interested I will have to have a true BMI measurement at the gym. Thats one of the things that being in Cali you have a real advantage, its always beautiful to go outside and do things.

31.4   I have not gained any weight since I retired 22 years ago.

I'm not really worried about it. The 'new' bp suggested is 110/60. At various times, the medical profession has raised hell about eating eggs, red meat, and a bunch of other no no's .  They have proudly prescribed statins which can damn near wreck bodily functions, etc.  They prescribe chemo which kills both cancerous cells AND healthy cells.  They might try but they still 'practice'  medicine and are human like the rest of us.

So far, I eat eggs and red meat and I'm 86 so I don't need an overweight physician to tell me what to do.

I like health professionals but it's still my bod. I exercise regularly and lift weights. Keep active and riding is the way to go!

Hey Donaldcc what's yours since you started this thread? ;) ;) ;)

John Schmidt

I have to agree with Robert, anyone that has a fair amount of muscle mass will check in high on that scale. Mine was 30, but I also know I'm overweight and could stand to lose about 20. If I were to drop to the suggested weight for my age(76) and physical size, I'd look like I was out of a concentration camp.....all eyeballs and teeth with sunken cheeks and no energy. If I dropped to 195 it only drops my BMI to 28, only 2 points. They say to exercise more, eat less and better. What they(whoever "they" are) don't remember these old joints are just that; old. I'm fighting a major pain in the hip due to an old torn cartilage and some arthritis so riding my bicycle is out, as is some of the exercises I was doing in the gym 3-4 times a week and playing a few rounds of golf. The weight has stayed fairly constant, just drives me nuts to not be able to get out and do stuff. I'll get back down nearer 200lbs. which is a good weight for me considering my build, but that BMI will still say I'm obese. I wonder how many people I met at InZane thought I was obese, that would be interesting.  ;)

YoungPUP

According to that I'm the resident fat ass at 6' 4" and 326#  bmi of 39.7.  But that doesn't take into account general health etc.  I may be "obese"  (their term not mine) but maintain a BP of 110/60 and can pass a respiratory test (spirometer [Fire Dept.]) with NO problems.  That's why I do not agree with these classifications of size= health.  There's no place in them for just being a Big man.

Wow was just playing around with this and if a man born in 57 weighed 140 with a height of 6 feet then he would have a BMI of 18.  :2funny: :2funny: :2funny: :2funny: I guess they consider starvation a good thing. That is just ridiculous and yet this is more than likely what the new rules on O care are saying. Yup be prepared to spend more on health insurance considering all of us are severely overweight.  I would be unhealthy at that weight and to a point of starvation. Where the hell do they get these numbers from? Did you hear about the young girls that came home from school because the teacher sent a letter home telling them they were fat when their weight was no where near a issue? I get a bit outraged when I hear the lack of caring in applying the numbers to people without true consideration of their body types. Some it hurts and it does not take into account the varities of people. Its the usual you have to fit into a mold this is what I say is perfect type of bs. The only place I guess you could consider a healthy place by this measurement was Auschwitz
'Fat Letters' Spark Outrage Among Parents
One mother is fighting back after her daughter was labeled overweight by her school.
http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/video/fat-letters-spark-outrage-parents-20503592

While most put on weight in the stomach it is only one point of measurement for BMI. Also with the new machines out there its even easier to truly measure BMI. Its a measurement of fat on more than one place on the body and places like legs usually dont have much fat on men. So it averages out.

Be prepared everyone this is from the Mayo clinic and they do not pull stats out of their hat. Even the schools sending letters home about BMI, just a coincidence or is this really what the new health care reform is trying to tell us or make us do. I have heard alot about overweight and trying to shame people into losing weight on the news. Well here we go with the propaganda on how we should really be. I am also getting tired of those that in the know supposedly telling us how things should be without any care to reality or people. Brainwashing at it finest courtesy of the health care system. To give you a idea how unreal this really is my father in law who has cancer who they gave 6 months to live, 6 years later would be classified as obese when he is just trying to put on weight being eaten up by cancer. He is on a vegetarian diet watches what he eats like a hawk and tries to exercise as much as he is physically able to do. To look at this man from how he was to how he is pains me. The only good thing is he is still around, thanks be to God.

But a paper published today by the American Academy of Pediatrics argues that weighing and measuring the height of schoolchildren and sending letters home with overweight kids is an important tool for combating the obesity epidemic.
NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. (WHDH) -- Schools in North Andover are trying help students dealing with obesity issues, but some families say the schools are going too far.
Cameron Watson, 10, isn't just a strong athlete; he's also a tough fourth grader who didn't let a “fat letter” sent to his home get him down.

Who the hell are these people? I think they should be put in prison for trying to brainwash kids or even adults into thinking their fat. There are some cases but the majority are no problem. The real question here is BY WHAT STANDARDS? If the goal is to have a long life then this is creating alot of damage over miss information on one possible standard if even done right has dubious consequences at extending life or quality of life.

Yeah, it doesn't make sense.   Everyone is different and very few fit the mold that the medical profession wants them in.

That's why you must be in charge of your own body. The Docs try to treat everyone like a car. If it's a Mazda for example, then all Mazdas must have the same attributes or problems.  Pure BS.

I have seen 68 years happen.  Stand 6' 3" (shrank an inch) and a very happy 220 lbs.  That's around 27.5 on the BMI.   I have nearly a 49" chest and 35" waist.  I do lift weights and do cardo.  I do not think myself as being over weight.  I always wanted to do one of those percent fat procedures where they put you in a water tank to weigh you.  Supposedly a true measure of fat percent.

I suppose if a person has a desk job and no exercise, the BMI would make sense.  It just does not, nor can it work for individuals who workout and have more than average muscle mass.  It also does not nor can show what kind of weight one has,  is it fat or muscle.  On the scale is impossible to tell the difference.

That's also my story and sticking to it!  >:(

YIKES - I am so far the highest number at 40.2.  At least my BMI is still below my age of 44?  :'(

I recalculated and even right out of high school at 210 lbs. and 5'10",  it still says I am OBESE at 39.1.  Has to be off somehow since I felt although a little chubby right out of high school, NO way would I consider myself OBESE.  Now is a different story of course.  :(

Your waist-to-hip ratio can be more accurate and telling than BMI for those with increased muscle mass such as athletes. This link http://www.bmi-calculator.net/waist-to-hip-ratio-calculator/waist-circumference.php has the calculator and explains how to measure it, what it means and what you can do about it.

Out of curiosity I tried different weights but kept my age and height the same. Turns out I'd have to weigh 175, means losing 37 lbs. to get to a 25 BMI. Ain't gonna happen in this lifetime, I'd look starved.
