Pull all the spark plugs and crank it over. See if fuel comes out any cylinders. If so, you have a stuck float in that carb.

+1 to what Sandy said. Let us know. Hopefully no damage done.
Curious. Did you just hit the starter switch once? Did the engine crank at all? Would like to hear more about the noise you heard.

TheSpadMan

Engine started up and seemed to be idling fine ... except for the noise I was hearing. I shut it down and re-started it and same noise, so I shut it off and backed it back into the garage.  :tickedoff:  Sounded more like a rattling wher.... as in a gear being stuck ??? More to the back of the engine and on the starter side. Maybe the starter not dis-engaging?? Weird !!  :o

TheSpadMan

Just relized this morning how to describe the noise I am hearing.  If you have ever listened to an open dry clutch  on an HD.... It sounds a lot like that. Something is spinning and catching every now and then, but constantly spinning. Engine starts first few seconds of the starter butten being engaged. No problem with the startting the engine....if that might be a problem. It starts on the first hit every time.... But I will pull the plugs this weekend ...

No need to pull your plugs. It would be a waste of time since it starts and runs. Not sure how to address this. Pull the starter and push start it? See if the noise is still there? Just running some thoughts by you. Perhaps you could post a video to youtube with the bike running and the sound?
Not a bad idea to check the oil level. Make sure the bike is standing straight up to do this. If on it's kickstand it will give you a false reading, and will cause you to want to overfill it. Dag from Norway just had a sound near that area. Couldn't identify it. Some suggested it was the oil pump chain. Turned out to be the alternator. Everything was working as intended, just making noise. Keep us posted.

If this noise happens after the engine is started, it might be that your starter button is sticking and needs cleaning up.

Not so, Gryphon.  With a properly functioning starter you should be able to push the start button while the engine runs without activating or engaging the starter.

Well, maybe mine isn't functioning properly, but when my engine is running and I turn my bars to the right and the start button is depressed by my tank bag, I can hear the starter motor spinning.  Been that way as long as I can remember.  Check yours and see if this is true.  Maybe this is another difference between an Interstate and other Valkyries?

BTW, my Valkyrie is Gryphon, and I'm its Rider.  :)

End of Story .... I had just checked the oil, befor starting the engine, and thought it was fine. Went back and checked the oil again, and added half a quart. GUESS WHAT ???!! NOISE STOPPED!!! :uglystupid2:  :uglystupid2:

I own both Standards and an Interstate.  None will engage the starter while the engine is turning.  Yours has something wrong.

I was speaking to the Valkyrie.    ;)    ;D

I suppose it wasn't you that changed the oil last.  Because if it was you and you knew you put in 4 qts, then you wouldn't be putting in extra oil.  If it truly used a half a qt then there is something else definitely wrong.

I have heard a sound like that upon start up, and the bike turned out to have a couple broken teeth on the starter gear, caused by a hydra-lock.  It was not a funny noise, it was a sad noise!   :-[  Hoser  :o

This is interesting. I have read that you can press the starter button while going down the road to 'flash' your headlight (on/off/on) at oncoming traffic. Obviously this would not work for the people whose starter tries to run when you press the starter button.

Somebody please tell me where the interlock is on a Valk that keeps the starter from running when the engine is running. Is there a circuit that blocks out the starter button when the engine is running?

If I recall this right, when the engine is running, is in gear with clutch engaged, the starter will not turn when the button is pressed.

If the engine is running and the clutch is dis-engaged or in neutral, the starter will spin when the starter button is pressed.

I know I've had the starter spin when the engine was running and clutch lever pulled in.

I know it doesn't spin when clutch is engaged and I'm rolling down the road flashing my headlight.

Mike you are correct.

Gryphon, I stand corrected.  I tried it on mine.  Obviously I have never pulled in the clutch while depressing the starter button with the engine running.  It's the clutch and in gear switches that stop my starter from turning.

P.S.  Tell your rider you two were right.   ;)

It takes more then that to mess with my head; usually it takes a woman.   ;D

Usually when my tank bag pushes the start button it's when I'm backing up, so I'm either in neutral or my clutch is in.
