Trunk for a Tourer

OK y'all, I have a 98 Tourer, it has a passenger backrest but my wife has mentioned wanting something along the lines of a trunk like on either an Interstate or Electra Glide Ultra. I figure it's cheaper to get something added to my current ride instead of buying a new (to me) bike.

What's out there? What can be rigged? I like the idea of more room myself. I've seen those cheap trunks on ebay for $75-80 but they don't wrap around the passenger like I want.

Links will be appreciated as will other suggestions for a solution to my problem. I don't really want to go "cheap" but low cost is what I am working toward.

They're a bit pricey, but if you want one that looks really good, and fits perfect, you can't beat a trunk off of an Interstate. That's the route I went on mine, and my wife loves it. In fact, she's so comfortable that sometimes she falls asleep.

I just waited until I found one that was complete, and grabbed it. Most of the time, they sell the mounting brackets separately, but they're usually pretty easy to find.

There's one on eBay right now.

That is what I'm looking for...wish I had the money for it right now...doubt it will be there in a couple months  :'(

Showed my wife an interstate the other day and she said that bike has wrap around speakers, I want wrap around speakers.  And I told her that for about $1500.00 I could put one of those on for her. That conversation came to an abrupt stop.

When I converted MGM to a Trike, the cheapest I could find a I/S trunk for was just a tad less than $1800 shipped.

Instead I bought a Harley box.   It looks good and works like a charm.

Market price for a used Interstate trunk is around $1000.  Adding the mounting hardware normally bumps it up by $200 to $300.

That's more than you're looking to spend but it is the best fit.

I mounted one of the cheap eBay trunks and like it fine.  I did get the rack and wrap around backrest option, think the total was around $150 after shipping.  I did have to go to the hardware store to find some better mounting brackets.

When I go on long trips I put this hideous thing on. Type "givi monokey topcase" into
Amazon to see several sizes and prices. It uses a mounting plate (bought extra), I hooked
the mounting plate to my OEM sissybar rack. Carolyn has Ultimate armrests, another
$150 or so. The monokey topcases snap off like luggage. We think it is a deluxe
setup, just ugly is all...

That one may not be there, but they pop up pretty regularly. My wife and I discussed getting one, including what all it would cost (cost of the trunk, brackets, re-painting etc....), and once we made the decision to go ahead, I just watched eBay and waited. Once I had saved up enough money to buy one, it took a month or two for one to come up which was what I considered to be a good deal. Once that happened I pulled the trigger, and bought it.

If you decide to go this route, after saving up about $1,000 to $1,250, just be patient, and wait for the right one to come up. Depending on the color of your bike, if you're lucky, maybe you can even find one that's already the right color and won't need re-painting.

Just go to eBay, and create a couple of searches. One for "Honda Valkyrie Trunk" and "Honda Valkyrie Interstate Trunk". You can set up the search whereas it will send you a notice via email any time something is added that meets your criteria.

I was able to get my trunk off of eBay about a year and a half ago for around $900.  It cost me $400 to get the paint matched to my bike since it had already been custom painted.

On the Friday before Mothers Day I semi-joked to Sue that I wanted to buy her a Bark-o-lounger.   Then I showed her a picture of a 2003 Goldwing for sale.  She went for it.  The Wing being less than four miles away, I had to look at it.  The seller had replaced this Wing which had 85k miles on the odo with a newer Wing.  I did not come away with it, and it was quickly sold to someone else.  I knew it would not last long, could have had it for $8500.  The seller also had a '99 Valkyrie Standard in the garage NFS.

Before adding a trunk, I would permanently convert the Valk to solo and buy a Goldwing for two up.

get a Givi Trunk.  You can't go wrong.  Affordable, useful, easy to remove, easy to install.  Seriously, its the way to go.

1998 Standard with a 2001 Interstate trunk... After buying and painting I've got somewhere around $1,300 in it.

I've seen alot of people that thought they were cool , but then again Lord I've seen alot of fools.

I guarantee that a Givi trunk will not be as comfortable and provide as secure a feeling to the passenger as a stock Interstate trunk.

You can try adding a tourpak from a Harley to the back of a Valkyrie like the Valk owner from Ohio (I think).  He used to call it a Honda-Davidson because he also added Harley bags.  I am sure someone will remember who I am talking about.

there is a simple and cheaper solution. when I built my trike I found several interstate trunks off of 100 and 1200 goldwings. bought a really nice one for $50.00 and modified the mounting brackets to work on my trike. painted it the same color and it looks great, has the backrest and elbow rests, for a total investment of less than $100.00

I have a black interstate trunk that is spotless, has some pinstriping added, rear speakers installed and includes all hardware including Interstate struts that I will let you have for $900.  PM me if interested.
Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

Magellon

Myself and a friend of mine had one of these plastic ones.

Mine lasted about a year, his less than that but he had more miles than me. They both started to crack at hinges and other places and the weather strip was worthless. It peeled off then all I heard was "rattle rattle rattle" over bumps. Also the lock was crap. I got what I paid for. I do have a set of their side bags which have done well.

Next i bought one of these.

Love the box but I mounted it to the stock standard rack like the little plastic one before but the rack arms cracked and I almost left my box and an extra helmet and a camera behind on the freeway. I made a new heavy duty rack and no problems since. If I had to do it all over again I would have NEVER wasted the money on the little plastic one, I would have waited to buy the one I have now or one from and Interstate.

I got one like magalones and mine is still in great shape. Weather stripping is still there and I've painted it bout two or three times along with my bike had it for bout four or five years now. No problems with lock or cracking. Much bigger than most trunks and wife loves the comfort. Looks great on bike too. Think it was round 150 or so. I couldn't complain bout it. Other than prefabbing some of the mounting hardware. Bit other than that I can't complain. Imo.

Hey Mike, are you able to open the lid with the backrest on the bike? Can't see the height and fitment in the pic  I had a Givi on my FJR and the quality Is very good.

Mike, are you able to open the lid with the backrest on the bike?

I added a board into the mix that extends the OEM sissybar rack, and
bolted the mounting plate to it. I actually have two racks, two boards and two
mounting plates... When Carolyn goes with me for an overnighter, I use
the rack with the longer board, when I go long distance for days, I use
the rack with the shorter board.

Got it, thanks.  I might just have to save some pennies and get the I/S trunk.

Dave, I wish I had the money right now. I'll get back to you to see if you still have it when I get to where I'm going to buy. I really would prefer to get a Interstate trunk but can't afford it right now
