Mayfly hatch - WI - so bad roads are slippery around LaCrosse

Fox news - and CBS local at noon - reported the Mayflies in WI are so bad they are showing up on weather radar like a storm.  The radar on Fox showed it along the Mississippi around La Crosse.  They said it was so bad the bugs covered everythin, made the roads slippery and caused accidents.  Just what I need before my road trip to WI.  Had a bug storm at Takhli RTAFB during the nam - really sucked, they covered everything.  This would be horrible on a bike.  However I hear the hatch only lasts a couple days or so.

Any experience, or more info, local reports on bugs?  Hate to hold up the trip but don't want to deal with slippery bug covered roads, or getting a nice bug coating on me and Deerslayer.

Comments?

It'll probably be clear by the time you get here, especially if we get some rain. Otherwise you could head northa bit and come through Minneapolis and Eau Claire instead.
When in doubt, ride.

Wow. That's crazy. Nice thing about here is very few bugs.  :cooldude:

Many years ago (about 20 guessing) we went fishing pulling our boat up in Prairie du Chien area on Mississippi river during a mayfly hatch.  Trust me, NOTHING you want to drive a cycle let alone pull a boat/trailer on the great river road and surrounding roads.  The bugs were so covering the road that if you applied the brakes normal to slightly harder, it would slide the car as if on snow (not like on ice though).  Plus, bug splats were horrible all over and hard to come off.

But like said, only last a week or so.  Best to call some local places around LaCrosse like police dept. non emergency number or dept of tourism to find out if the mayfly hatch is done by the time you pass on thru.

It is pretty disgusting to see though and sort of weird like on the twilight zone or something to that extent.

saw this on the weather channel this morn, impressive amount of bugs to show on radar!

Wouldnt it have made sense to spray at the time they hatch? Less pesticide, less area, more bugs.

I have to go thru there on 8/17.  There is already major construction on I-90 at LaCrosse.
