Subject: Who was Thomas Jefferson?

Awesome man except for the fact that he was unable to live within his means.  Having visited Monticello, Poplar Forest and the University of Virginia several times, and Colonial Williamsburg 20+ times,  I've probably read each of these at some time or another, but never collected as below.  Remarkable, indeed!  We are witnessing proof of his opinions.

Thomas Jefferson was a very remarkable man who started learning very early in life and never stopped.
At 5, began studying under his cousin's tutor.
At 9, studied Latin, Greek and French.
At 14, studied classical literature and additional languages.
At 16, entered the College of William and Mary. Also could write in Greek with one hand while writing the same in Latin with the other.  (I wonder what he could write?)
At 19, studied Law for 5 years, starting under George Wythe.
At 23, started his own law practice.
At 25, was elected to the Virginia House of Burgesses.
At 31, wrote the widely circulated "Summary View of the Rights of British America? And retired from his law practice.
At 32, was a Delegate to the Second Continental Congress.
At 33, wrote the Declaration of Independence.
At 33, took three years to revise Virginia's legal code and wrote a Public Education bill and a statute for Religious Freedom.
At 36, was elected the second Governor of Virginia succeeding Patrick Henry.
At 40, served in Congress for two years.
At 41, was the American minister to France and negotiated commercial treaties with European nations along with Ben Franklin and John Adams.
At 46, served as the first Secretary of State under George Washington.
At 53, served as Vice President and was elected president of the American Philosophical Society.
At 55, drafted the Kentucky Resolutions and became the active head of Republican Party.
At 57, was elected the third president of the United States.
At 60, obtained the Louisiana Purchase doubling the nation's size.
At 61, was elected to a second term as President.
At 65, retired to Monticello.
At 80, helped President Monroe shape the Monroe Doctrine.
At 81, almost single-handedly created the University of Virginia and served as its first president.
At 83, died on the 50th anniversary of the Signing of the Declaration of Independence along with John Adams.

Thomas Jefferson knew because he himself studied the previous failed attempts at government. He understood actual history, the nature of God, his laws and the nature of man. That happens to be way more than what most understand today. Jefferson really knew his stuff. A voice from the past to lead us in the future:
John F. Kennedy held a dinner in the White House for a group of the brightest minds in the nation at that time. He made this statement: "This is perhaps the assembly of the most intelligence ever to gather at one time in the White House with the exception of when Thomas Jefferson dined alone."
"When we get piled upon one another in large cities, as in Europe, we shall become as corrupt as Europe."
-- Thomas Jefferson

"The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not."
-- Thomas Jefferson

"It is incumbent on every generation to pay its own debts as it goes. A principle which if acted on would save one-half the wars of the world."
-- Thomas Jefferson

"I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them."
-- Thomas Jefferson

"My reading of history convinces me that most bad government results from too much government."
-- Thomas Jefferson

"No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms."
-- Thomas Jefferson

"The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government."
-- Thomas Jefferson

"The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants."
-- Thomas Jefferson

"To compel a man to subsidize with his taxes the propagation of ideas which he disbelieves and abhors is sinful and tyrannical."
-- Thomas Jefferson

Thomas Jefferson said in 1802:
"I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies.

If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around the banks will deprive the people of all property - until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered."

I wish we could get this out to everyone!

His followers are also clueless.

Regarding our founding fathers, I tend to prefer Franklin with Jefferson next in line. Jefferson was a brilliant man, but, changed drastically once in office. He was also one that ended up disliking slavery, but, as others, still found it too profitable to free those he owned. He also had an 'affair' [ a polite way to put it] with one of his slaves for 3 decades. So, it just shows that even great men are flawed, all part of being human I guess.

Very good and well done a great argument for being a citizen since O has a totally different angle of the US since he looks at it As a colonial power  suppressing him and parents instead of a country trying to find its way and blessing it's people. He has a plan and purpose it is not to have a love of a country you want to change otherwise you may not do the things needed. It's willfully being ignorant

Great point about all men being human and being "susceptible" to flaws, corruption, and, and temptations of power. If the few dozen men in that room, who started the war, were the only ones who had to fight that war, there would be no wars. War is too easy to start when you are sending everyone else's sons and daughters to do the fighting and sacrificing.  This is why government must be kept small.

An American President, and The Biography of Thomas Jefferson. Also the Library of Congress viewable online. It is the oldest and largest library on earth. The article started out as a research project.

I'm sure it was very well researched and is some interesting reading.

One small correction is in order.  The list makes reference to the Republican party.  Jefferson belonged to the Democratic Republican party which many consider a precursor to the Democratic party of our day.  The political party we know as the Republican party was not founded until some thirty years after Thomas Jefferson's death.

He was indeed a great, great man and many political and cultural factions of today strive to claim relationship to him.

Thanks for the post

I don't think we will see another like him, nor the likes of Franklin and Adams

Just never get tired of reading all I can about those men and the ideas
that got bounced around from 1760 to 1790

An amazing time that kids today should really be required to understand

Drove by Washington's Tappan NY headquarters today, the 76 house where Major Andre was

The folks who served in WWII were great, take nothing away from what they
accomplished beating back Hitler and Japan and boxing in communism, but IMHO the folks who gave birth to the USA were the greatest generation

if he was a man who found it hard to live within his means, that would explain the nod toward the democrapic party. BTW, I AM NOT A REPUBLICAN.

If o had to pass a history lesson first before he was allowed to be the American president, we would have been out of this recession, Putin would never had the balls to do what he is doing, the Middle east would look much better today, health care would be much better, and the economy, jobs and unemployment numbers would all be better by far. He couldn't pass a basic history test.

The folks who served in WWII were great, take nothing away from what they
accomplished beating back Hitler and Japan and boxing in communism, but IMHO the folks who gave birth to the USA were the greatest generation
Thank you. We are a lot alike. How about the part where o flunked basic american history?

Please don't draw that conclusion.  Politically the Democratic party of today has very little in common with the Democratic party of seventy-five years ago, let alone over two hundred years gone by.

One thing held in common by the Republican Democrats of Jefferson's time and the Democratic party of fifty years ago is a very strong holding among the southern states.

There are plenty of very smart people in this country but the problem is that none of them are stupid enough to get into politics let alone run for president.  By the way was George Jefferson from all in the family a relative of Thomas Jefferson? Ha Ha

Another thing that is interesting to see is the lack of comments about how the president can't pass a 2nd grade history test and has managed to surround himself with others who are just as ignorant as he is. It was the vs part of the title. Lets talk about that. He is just making things up to look good and his CNN MSMBC pocket media buddies never call him on it.

Depends entirely, doesn't it, on the fifth grader?  I'm sure, based upon past experience, that this administration/organization can put together a team of fifth graders that will make the President look good.   ;)

Over stay his welcome, I agree with that. I think he'd like to be made king for life. I never wanted to make him welcome though, ever.

But, still as far as impeachment. I'm wondering just what good it does. Two presidents have been impeached and both were acquitted. The House impeaches and the Senate acquits. I don't know how it affected Johnson, but, it hasn't seemed to affect Clinton. He seems just as, or more, popular as ever, and, they are some that even think he was a good president.

Willow

Impeachment isn't the answer even if it were possible.  Our problem is not so much the man in office as it is the electorate that put him there.

I just can't help but think how impeachment results in Joe Biden.   :o   Anyone who thinks Barrack Obama is not intelligent just wasn't paying attention when he chose his running mate.   ;)

Joe would only hold the office until the end of the term.  It would take just about that long to impeach so Joe would maybe have the reigns for a few days.  Cant be worse than what it is now.
