Fork seals

Please I need , I'm changing front fork seals and when I took the forks apart I think they were put back together wrong, what I have is the spring up on top of the tube and looking at the book and other pictures of the forks it looks like the spring goes on the bottom of the larger tube, does this sound right? So putting back how should I do it? Insert the spring first then slide the tube with the bushing on the bottom in then the long skinny tube that the cap screws on too? Any help PLEASE.

Oh yeah I'm working on a 1998 tour model and it's the right tube

The spring goes in from the top. That right side is a pain in the -ss. I made a compression tool out of an auto steering wheel puller. It did the job..not real well but good enough.

there is some posted pics of spring replacement in the tech section somewhere. I'm not sure how you're doing the job, it can be done without removing the forks from the bike or taking out the springs. This is also posted in the tech section.

Yes your fork was assembled wrong. Go by the manual diagram. Add fork oil before inserting the spring. Measure down from the top 5.3 inches to the oil level. Then add the spring, spacer tube and draw up the damper rod and get the split washer under the small nut. There should be a 1/2 inch between the nut and the end of the threaded rod. Screw on the fork cap and snug the small nut up against the fork cap.
