Here's a short article celebrating (or not) its demise...

We have a big tax at the gas pump, collected to pay for roads, but
used for whatever they feel like  :)

as they do in Europe. Their pump tax is a LOT more than here.

From 23 March 2011 the UK duty rate for the road fuels unleaded petrol, diesel, biodiesel and bioethanol is GB£0.5795 per litre (£2.63 per imperial gallon or £2.19 per U.S. gallon).[9]

Value Added Tax at 20% is also charged on the price of the fuel and on the duty. An additional vehicle excise duty, depending on a vehicle's CO2 production per kilometre, which depends directly on fuel consumption, is also levied.

Some states charge for a yearly inspection sticker which I believe is similar to the Brit MOT certificate. No inspection here in Georgia.

Some states charge an "ad valorem" tax every year on vehickes.

Serk

Here in The Republic of Texas at least we have gasoline taxes, annual vehicle registration fees/stickers, annual vehicle safety inspections and the most insidious of all, a massive increase in the number of toll roads. *Spits on the ground in disgust and embarrassment.*

(Not to mention the "It's not a tax" tax of driving performance awards being handed out by the local Revenue Collection Force... *Spits on the ground in even more disgust.*)

Never ask a geek 'Why?',just nod your head and slowly back away...

In Canada, the provincial government issues licence plates when you register a newly-purchased vehicle, regardless of whether you purchase it from a dealership or another individual.  The following applies to Alberta. I'm not familiar with the registration processes in other provinces, but they are probably similar.  We can transfer a plate from one vehicle we own to another, saving us the trouble of having to memorize a new number if we are simply replacing a vehicle.  Every year (or two, for slightly less than twice the fee), we pay to renew the registration of our vehicles.  This gives us a new document and a new sticker to put on our plate.  I don't know if the costs only cover the expense of the registry system or if it produces extra money for the general expenses of the province.  There are fuel taxes that are collected by the provincial and federal governments that go into general revenues.  General revenue pays for road construction and maintenance.  Many provinces require an annual vehicle inspection and all require proof of insurance to renew vehicle registration.  Some provinces have provincially run insurance and combine insurance and registration into one fee.

gas taxes are radically different from state to state, which is why I tried to never buy fuel in Cali, or NY. I always topped off in Missouri  :cooldude:
