1500 IS. I have a grinding noise in the rear end only when moving (obviously). Could it be the U joint?

Could be. or it more likely is a wheel bearing. The only way to know for sure is to teat into it and inspect :cooldude:

The last day of a 2500 mile trip I heard a small grinding sound in the rear. Sounded more like the brakes were draging a little. But did not change when the brake was applied. It turned out to be the left side rear bearing. I replaced both bearings in the rear.

Thanks, David in Fletcher NC.

Bearing makes sense. How hard is it to replace.

If you have or can get hands on a heat gun, it's real easy..heat up the wheel around the bearing, get it good and warm (while doing this put the new bearing in the freezer), tap the bearing out from the back side. With a new cold bearing and a hot wheel the bearing will just about fall in. I used the old race  to tap the new one in solid. Not a hard job.
