Hi Guys,
I have owned and rode a 1997 Honda Valkyrie since 2012. I also bought a 2006 Kawasaki Vulcan 1600, and a Triumph Rocket 3 at that time.

I was awarded 100% total and permanent disability, and went crazy on motorcycles. I rode around 40,000 miles before reality slowed me up. I have Gulf War Illness, yes it is a very real neurological disease caused by pyridostigmine bromide, Pancreatic cancer, Myasthenia Gravis, Non-Alcoholic Steateohepatitis caused by heavy exposure to trichloroethylene as an F-4 Phantom Jet Mechanic, tumors in my liver, spleen, thymus.

The VA Doctors want to carve me up like a Thanksgiving Day Turkey, but no thanks on that plan. I am going to have metal electrodes implanted in my spine to help control pain. Currently I cannot sit. Remaining in the sitting position for any length of time is extremely painful.

Wish me luck on the electrode surgery, and check out my website. The dogs are one of my proudest accomplishments in this life. They are my family.

David Scott Doutit

Some have lost recently and are greatly missed.

Others who bravely fight on beating the evil disease
and living the best they can
and not just riding on Valkyries either

If riding makes you happy keep doing it

May the Lord continue to grant you the strength and courage

Oss,
A few years ago, before all hell came down on me, a liver transplant was something that was discussed.
I did honestly consider it. But, after having brushed up against the veil of death, I totally reassessed this strange world we live in, and my place in it. Death is the escape hatch, not something to be feared. After a person passes away, and it is said, "They're in a better place now", that is more than just hyperbole. This is hell. And human beings have made it that way. At least that is what the ancient Gnostics believed. The animals are not responsible for following instinct, but we who have eaten of the fruit of the knowledge of good and evil are. There is a way that seems right to a man, but it is not the way of God.

Who could honestly argue that many of the actions that get a person ahead in society aren't actually  evil?  Who could honestly argue that the Earth is not actually a carnivorous food chain? Who could honestly argue that War, Control, and Manipulation are not the sad history of Earth? Who could  honestly argue that the difference between spirit and matter is not the same difference between alive and dead?

I do appreciate the comments and prayers on my behalf. I hope that I can be more pain free someday. I hope that I can straddle a motorbike for a decent ride someday. In many ways I am still a lucky guy. I love to go for walks by Spearfish Lake. I love to spend time with my Family and dogs. But to tell the truth after 48 years I have had enough of the "way it is". And all the Kings horses, and all the Kings men, couldn't put Humpty Dumpty back together again.

It sounds like you have been thru a lot and still are. Far be it for me to tell you how to live your life. But I do believe it's not time for you to go now. You evidently love motorcycles. There are a lot of us here that do also. You may not be physically able to ride now but we all love to talk about riding here. Any stories of riding are always appreciated here.  Take care my fellow riding buddy  :cooldude:

I can only speak for myself, but my gut looks like a highway road map from being cut open so much.

I'm not supposed to be here, but I like this side of the dirt much, much better.

I've survived TWO bouts of renal cell carcinoma now (starting back in 2005).  I'm still recovering from my surgery this past July.

When I finally woke up in the hospital (they chouldn't get me up for several days), I woke up virtually paralized.....legs didn't work, arms didn't work...couldn't do anything on my own or for my self.  Today, I can walk without my cane (graduated from a walker).

I was in the hospital for about a month...don't have any memory for about 2 1/2 weeks....gone, nadda, nothin'.  Lungs colapsed, kidney almost failed....not to mention a 2 foot long scar that hurt like hell.

There is NO cure for renal cell carcinoma and it doesn't respond to any known cancer treatments.  However, I'm still not letting it slow me down or hold me back.  As far as I'm concerned, it was just something that I had to get over....like a bad cold.   ;)

I hate hate hate hopitals  >:(, but I love what the doctors have done for me.  I'm still here....AND...I'll be able to get back on my Valk pretty soon.

It's your decision, and I won't pretent to tell you how to live your life, but don't be afraid of the surgerys.

Besides, I hear that chicks dig scars (you'd think I'd be pretty popular by now ;) ).

I was unable to keep up with a heart transplant patient
on the way back from GOTF (well once he slowed down and pulled over
for the rain I did pass him)
Had a friend go thru 2 liver transplants and still rode his gold wing
an 82 model
He had 10 yrs after the transplant and then got the 2nd one and more years
Another member I have ridden with got a kidney from a wonderful vrcc member
within the year.
He now has a new Valkyrie too.
I stayed at he and his wife's home back in April
He has more guts than me without any question in fact they all do

We have free choice or so I believe

I hope your choice works out for you

Live the life you want, its yours after all

But folks here will still pray for ya if'n thats ok

BF,
You are a tougher guy than me. You are begging for more punishment than I could take. Just so you know this is the chronological sequence after my last surgery, six weeks later deep vein thrombosis and a pulmonary embolism, four weeks later a diagnosis of myasthenia gravis, an extremely rare and potentially fatal autoimmune neurological disease, but this is the stinger five months treatment with a drug called pyridostigmine bromide which made me go insane, but the VA doctors didn't notice even though my wife told them repeatedly. The thing about going insane is you don't know you are insane yourself, so I always adamantly denied being insane. But I did go to the VA and told them change my medicine, because this crap caused some nasty side effects like chemical paralyzation, intense adbominal cramps for days, night sweats for days, I could not longer eat or crap, and they put me in the VA nuthouse, but did not change my medicine which was the cause of the insanity. I eventually tried to kill myself because I actually thought I was the only human being left on the planet. It did not work obviously. When I threw away the medicine the VA told me I needed to live, I started getting better, and saner. But it took me a whole year to realize I had been insane, and let go of all the delusions I experienced. When they are your own thoughts you tend to believe them no matter how ridiculous. But I now have chronic intense nerve pain all throughout my abdomen 24/7 365 days a year. Believe me the mental load that puts on a person's mind is beyond imagination. When I did go to private practice doctors it was easily discovered that my esophogus had massive ulceration the VA just let go.   I could go on and on but I think I made my point. Good luck and keep riding safe.

Oss,
I am into talking with God, but I do think the conversations are more for my sake than his. I wasn't implying that I wanted to just for the sake of dying. To be clear, I was saying there is a point a human being gets to when death clearly looks like the best outcome, and sometimes it really is. There is also a point a human being gets to when the veil is lifted and a person is honest enough to see people for what they really are. In most cases that is not very flattering for the people.

meathead,
Here is a motorcycle story. I am riding down the coastal side of hwy26 in oregon. My wife is on the back. We are in the passing lane moving 80mph. I am having a good time. It is absolutely beautiful with all the evergreens set against a rugged horizon. All of the sudden my left eye rolls back about halfway into my head. I can now see two distinctly different frames of vision. I rub my eye thinkin' it should go back. I had never had anything like that happen before. It does not go back. I just keep my eye closed so I can work my way over to the other lane and get to the shoulder. My wife asks whats the matter? I lie and say nothing the matter. But my eye will not go back into correct vision. We are about 30 miles out of cannon beach. I ride one eyed, but my equalibrium is totally off. I would never have my wife on the back with my vision or equalibrium off, but I had no choice. When we get to cannon beach I am hoping my eye goes back. It does not the first day there, or the second, or the third, until it is time to go. I am forced to tell my wife I cannot ride any motorcycle. I had kept my sunglasses on, and made a bunch of excuses about something in my eye and stuff like that. I did not want to worry my wife because she has been though a lot. So I tell, and we take a cab to the portland oregon VA hospital where I have to stay. My wife had to go home to take care of kids and animals. How is that story meathead?

The emperor has no clothes

Compelling !!! That's what it is. You are a good man for taking care of your wife. I'm not sure what to say except that you have my attention . I hope you stick around here. I think you can add a lot to our little community. I don't begin to have any idea what you are going through but I hope to know you better :cooldude:

BF

I'm not tough by any means.....just lucky I'm still alive and glad to still be here.   ;)

btw....I can totally understand the mind thing.  I had serious doubts about myself coming out of the surgery.  When I started to finally come around to some sort of consciousness, and for about 4 or 5 days there, I had some serious hullucinations.  My mind was playing some serious head games with me and for a time there, I had doubts of my own sanity.  I'm still questioning some of the stuff that went through my mind.

My wife can verify the crazy crap I was spitting out.   :crazy2:

I echo what others have said to salute you for your service to our country. And wish for you the best in your battles against the maladies you mentioned. Medical science is a wonderful thing, and we need more like you around for a long time to remind us of how petty most of our squabbles are compared to the real struggles many are going through in their lives. Whatever your decision, make it with all the information in front of you, with your family, and all those that love and care about you.

Take this advise from someone who knows...Start living and quit dying!!!

Best advice you will ever get.  I have been fighting two different cancers since 2004, the latest one is an extremely rare and fatal type I was diagnosed with in 2007.  It usually kills In a few months.  Attitude is everything, never embrace your illness, don't ever call it my cancer, take a personal role in your treatment regimen, don't settle for bogus advice from doctors, and don't give it an inch.  Truly believe you can beat it, and a good church full of prayer warriors on your side is also a great help.  Find the experts on your particular disease, and go to them, even if its on the other side of the country.  You wont be sorry.  Here is good thoughts and prayers for you for the best outcome possible.

Remember the scene in Jaws where Quint and Hooper are comparing scars while swapping tales about shark attacks, and Brody finally looks quietly at his appendix scar? Wow! That's sort of how I feel. Dang! My hat is off to you guys. Not that you had these problems, but that you just dealt with them and got on with living life to the fullest. You guys really are inspiring.
Having said that I do know that, with some people at least, God gets ready to call them home and prepares them for it. I've never personally known anybody happy to leave this world, but I've know several who were at piece with it. I'm always sad to see a good person go.

Then some other guys come on tellin' how tough they are, comparing scars, or cancers, or whatever. I can tell none of them have "been there". At least not where I have been, or anywhere near it. You  know I posted a similar intro on the Rocket board and got none of the bullshit.

I am not looking to join cliques on either board, but after some of the things I have been through (please don't tell me how many cancers you have had at this time) I thought I might try socializing with people again. I have not give up on the idea. But if you are an asshole, please don't post on my thread.
