Don't like shooting at a 45 degree angle on the ground . Ricochet could hit your daughter. I would say shoot at his feet, stop him and no worry about a bullet hitting the girl in the body.

The rushing is good.  Shooting while running is not recommended without A LOT of training.  What I would recommend is a much faster rush (because you are not thinking about shooting) get closer to him, that way if he tries to shoot you, you are moving faster (harder to hit)

Then hit the ground aim and carefully take out a foot or a leg...if you have no shot shoot anyway at a fence post or something safe but like he said, SHOOT and get his scared up.

The man was shooting at the perp's feet trying to assure the bullet impact beyond either person and hoping that maybe one will contact the perps foot/leg. But, basically the shooting was used as a distraction.
I think I can honestly say I wouldn't have shot because I wouldn't have thought quickly enough about that, but, I would have gone thru the window after the POS. Probably in real life, you wouldn't have a gun in your hand at that time. I know I don't have one in my hand every waking second.

I wouldn't shoot if he had the child near his body no way too dangerous.  Even at a 45 degree angle no way.  Up in the air shoot, definitely though is what I would do while rushing him.  If he shoots me then I go down and he runs and I shoot him then if able.

I wouldn't have a gun handy loaded anyways but I have an aluminum baseball bat very close by that I'd beat his brains out until nothing left and wouldn't leave it to judges to decide whether he lives or dies or rots in jail.  He'd be gone as long as he didn't kill/shoot me first. 

I wouldn't trust NO ONE in today's world too many loonies out there even here in small town USA.

the 2nd story window to pull his drowning (niece?) out of the pool...

I carry a gun at home. I wouldn't have shot through the glass. If he was 2' from the glass, maybe. The farther from the glass he is the more severe the bullet deflection. Same with shooting through brush.

I would have rushed him and shot when my muzzle entered his mouth or just before it touched his neck. You have to be sure no pressure is against the muzzle if it's a semi-auto because pushing back against the slide will trigger the disconnector. No such worries if it's a revolver.

Shooting at the feet would have been a good technique for those who are good at shooting while moving. That's not me. I'm an old fat guy who mostly shoots standing still.

If he had got to a car before I reached him, then I would have shot through the glass.

Truthfully, I would have probably been too angry to pull a gun and feel pretty certain I would have beaten him to death if possible. I kill deer and other game animals I respect with firearms, and I try to do so humanly.

People who hurt children are the worst form of evil and deserve no respect.

However, there was NO 911 call to report the possible drowning.

And, he is cited in a police report as a robbery suspect for a robbery taking place at the same time!

I live rural. Folks who arent local are always scrutinized. If they come through scoping during the day, then back at night they usually have a red dot on the windshield so they can pray.
Too many dogs, neighbors, too far to the paved road.
Actual situation, shoot the feet. Either he cant walk, or she's too hard to drag.
Fire up the back hoe and after an hour of digging your new pool, decide thats just not where the wife wanted it. Fill the hole. Have a nice breakfast and go to work, in your new car,that you can leave in the badder side of town. BTW, I have never done anything like this before.

My pistol would be in the pants behind my back.  The perp is armed and I don't want him to start shooting the moment he sees a gun.  I would run out, hands exposed-out, and try to engage him in conversation or anything to slow his leaving.  I might yell to my child to bite that man as hard as you can honey, kick and fight(distraction).  I would continue to move sideways and closer to him, looking for a clear shot.  As soon as I got it, I would draw and shoot.  If he opened fire, I go prone and shoot for the legs.  You cannot let him get her in a car and leave.

But preferably, a double tap to the groin, then a double to center mass.  Then, in case anyone is watching, I make it look like I am rendering first aid, but don't (and especially do nothing to stop blood flow).

My youngest daughter is thirty years old.  They all left on their own.  Well there was helping influence.  I didn't shoot any of my sons-in-law.

I think it's good to plan for and train for the unexpected.  That's a scenario I'm not going to spend a lot of time practicing (nor am I going to waste rounds into the ground).  Best preparation is hone your marksmanship and develop the mindset that will allow you to point a gun at someone's face and pull the trigger without flinching.

That mental trait is more rare than you might guess.
