Slow jets?

I have been working on a friend's 97 std. with 19,491 miles on it, that has been setting since 2005. Did the final drive, tires, fluid flush, plugs, etc. etc. I have run a bottle of seafoam, then a 1/2 bottle of Berryman's B-12 Chemtool, each with 2 gals of fuel, running mostly under the 2K range. I still have cylinders #3 and 5 plugged up (pipes are cool and some fuel dripping out of drain tubes). The bike runs like a bat out of hell above 3K, so I know the plugs are firing ok.

Question: Can I pull the slow jets from 3 & 5 without removing the carbs from the bike?

Just take your time with the bowl screws, they are pretty soft.

Don't forget to drain the bowls!  (don't ask)  :tickedoff:

I picked up a set of JIS screwdrivers from amazon, what a difference!

olddog1946

I just ordered a stubby JIS screwdriver from Amazon.. thanks signart..also made a philips bit into a JIS, for use with a 1/4" socket and ratchet . (at least I think it will work ok, seems to fit nice and tight into the carbs). I'm going to hold off on using it, put a few more miles on the bike today, choke on and off, rpms under 2K most of the time, with occasional burst up to 4 grand. Ended up with a great improvement, no longer bucks and snorts under low rpm acceleration. So, will let him run a tank of fuel and cleaner through it first.

just keep using the B-12, it will clean them out. see their website.
seafoam is ok for carbs but its low temp old tech oils (pale oil) in it will solidify on the back side of the hot intake valves, thereby lowering HP and mpg. PO does not readily ignite in an IC engine, cause of white smoke and hence potential for hydro lock at higher concentration levels.

:cooldude: A full can of Berrymans  to a tank of gas and run it out.

Yes, you can pull the slow jets while the carb bank is still in place. My question is why? It is unlikely that you can clean the affected carbs well enough to not have to do it all over again soon. The special words used while working in tight quarters won't help either.

I dropped the bowls and replaced the slow jets with carbs in bike. Still runs great 3 years later.
