doing my new tire solo.....I knew it'd be a little more aggravating, but I had to get it done for the Fall Color Ride......100, 931 Mile Valkyrie Rear End Maintenance and new Tire......

I took a 150 mile ride yesterday to get the last few miles out of this tire.....I think I did ok....6,452 miles on this tire..... :cooldude:

Here's the drive shaft end that goes into the pinion cup.......just a little wear on that one side of the teeth....not bad for 100,931 miles....?? :-\

I plan on replacing the driveshaft and pinion cup the next tire change

the other end looked ok.....I cleaned it up a little better and re-greased it...

the teeth on here look pretty good........I replaced all the O-rings and MDP'd everything before I put it all back together.....

Getting the wheel back on while trying to line up the axle and the brake rotor was a PIA......but I got it all back together and didn't have any parts left over....... :cooldude: :D ;D

Oh yeah.....I also changed the wheel dampners......hadn't been done since around 70,000ish miles........at Smokin Joe's house.....the weekend Old School had his fatal wreck...... :( :(.......
I've noticed a slight "sloppiness" as of late, and they were pretty loose with lots of shredded rubber in the holes.......new ones went in very nicely....

Good job. Gotta tear mine down now too for new tire and all that goes with it (lubing splines etc.) . Did my dampners last change so can skip that hopefully.  :cooldude:

Stanley, have you replaced your splines? They show no wear at 100k? Look like new.
If you can't be a good example: be a WARNING!!

Good job Stan.....as long as you got the axle then immediately the 4 bolts thing right, you really cant screw it up.  Im sure you used some good grease, those two things are critical, the rest is just so many nuts and bolts

Yeah, that's tough sometimes... people have been suggesting to get it all back together,
axle and everything, without the caliper... then slip the axle back out an inch and
slip in the caliper... I think that's it... I'm going to try it next time...

You left out that you changed the tire yourself too...  :cooldude:

I was 'hesitant' to open this post. We KNOW you my friend!  :2funny: Splines look pristine. Mark T gave me a suggestion I'm passing on to you for the next service of the splines. A 1" ratchet strap thru the wheel opening and over the fender on the reinstall acts as your 3d hand. First couple of spline services it fell back together-THEN I ran up on the spline service from hell!!  I am also approaching the 100000 mile club on my Phatt Ghuel. Again-insides of that spline P-cup area lookin cursed good. Sooooo afraid too ask BUT did Cousin Cletus get laid??  RIDE SAFE.
Today is the tommorow you worried about yesterday. If at first you don't succeed screw it-save it for nite check.  1964  1968 U S Navy. Two cruises off Nam.

It ensures that everything is lined up properly before you push the wheel into the pumpkin so that you don't pinch an o-ring, especially the big one behind the flange teeth.    Without doing it that way your first sign of a possible broken o-ring is a lot of grease slung out on the wheel, especially after the first ride and wipe off, if it keeps getting slung out.

Last not exactly right.  Next after axle is the time to do it to insure best alignment of the drive!  :cooldude:

You'll know soon enough and if unlucky then get to pull things down and do it again.   It's a lesson that doesn't take more than a time or two to learn.   8)

I was going to ask Santa for one this year, but i haven't gotten anything else I've wanted....I built a home made bead breaker, but otherwise use the 2-3 harbor freight tire irons and power it on....wasn't too bad ....used dawn dishwashing soap
