Veterans Day 2014

They held a Veterans Day observance at the Willow Springs High School gym today and I elected to attend. I'm glad that I did. War II Veterans Korean War Veterans Vietnam Veterans And Iraq/Afghanistan Veterans were in attendance. I was standing with some of the other Vets shooting the bull when the young folks and their teachers started to file in. Most of the guys were members of the local American Legion Post and the local V F W Post. After the presentation of the National Colors and the Pledge of Allegiance music was played and songs were sung and before long the program was history. 2 Korean War Vets an Iraq/Afghanistan War Vet and myself were standing in the hallway off to the side still shooting the bull. A lot of the young folks and a few of the teachers came up to us and shook our hands and thanked us for our service. One or two of the young men threw us a snappy salute!  The old gnats are hovering around my puter as I try to relate this story. As they-the children and teachers-were filing in it dawned on me like a flash-these children and teachers-although from a different era-were/are the WHY of me going into the Navy and doing my bit of service so these kids could grow up in a FREE Country. 4 years of my life to help keep the U S of A a better place to live was well worth the effort involved. I have NEVER reggreted one thing I have done while in Uniform. GOD bless America again. RIDE SAFE.

Thank you for your years of service! 

I also attended our small K-12 school Veteran's program was well done this morning.  A poem was read by a senior I know and brought a small tear to my eyes about a young child in school missing her father overseas while all the other kids had their fathers present.  Very touching indeed.
