The hunting Gods smiled on me today

The day started off kinda strange but sure ended on a good note. Arrived at my hunting spot shortly after 8AM and realized I had left my hunter orange at home. Thought it was kinda funny after the recent conversations here about wearing hunter orange.

Drove back home, grabbed my hat and headed back to the woods. Just as I got to the top of the ladder before even entering the stand I saw a nice doe at maybe 120 yards and shot her while kneeling on one knee with the other foot still on the ladder. 3 minutes later just as I sat down in the stand to catch my breath a nice buck stood in the same place and I shot again. The buck is a nice 9 pointer. The doe is huge.

The buck traveled about 35 yards and the doe a tough 100 yards from where she was shot. For some reason I decided to hunt with my single shot encore in 460 S & W mag today instead of the AR in 450 bushmaster.

Although this is the largest racked buck I have taken I would have let him grow another year if I saw him at camp, but for close to home he's good enough. The doe is, I'm sure, the heaviest deer I've ever taken and far out weights the buck. When I was walking up on her and realized how big her body was I was really worried I might have shot two bucks.  :-[

Luckily, a family member was cutting wood no more than 3 miles away and drove his old truck across the creek and back to where I was to help with the retreive. It would have taken all the rest of the day for my old self to drag them all the way to the road alone.

that's a very nice rack on a somewhat smaller bodied buck.

Me and my dad shot 15+ years ago same time the biggest does I have ever seen as well, one had almost black hair, the other very lightly tan.  Took us all day to drag both back since my dad couldn't walk too well let alone carry both of our guns while I went back and forth every 100 yards for each deer to drag back about 4 miles.  When I got back I was close to dead and ringing wet of exhaustion/sweat.  The entire back of each doe was completely gone of hide down to the skin in a 6 inch wide path.   That was in my 20's and fit, no way I could do both now, only one.

nice rifle !! I have the same one in 45/70. I debated getting it in 460. I still may one day in a pistol barrell to add to the encore.

" He's good enough "  Ya, I'd say so, nice deer.

Its pretty neat when a day that starts bad turns out good.

.460 mag, you must really hate them deer! Nice shooting!
Woops, I'm sorry.

Well done Kemosabe.   :cooldude:

Do you chop them up or take them to someone?

My buddy called me about 9:00 AM and wanted to know if I'd go over and hook onto his ATV trailer and meet me at a given point in the gravel road not too far from his house.

Told him yes, went and hooked up, wow it had a nice BIG Polaris ATV on it, even had a roof and seat belts.

He drove down to where his buck was already gutted out and kind of hung on a tree limb.

Backed up under the deer, dropped him on the back of the ATV and proceeded back to the road.   Found his pickup and loaded the deer onto it.    I took the ATV back over to my truck and the trailer.    He headed for the Butcher shop, and I headed for his house.

Last I heard the Butcher was in the process of making him steaks, sausage and etc.   Should fill up his freezer for this winter.

Wow, look at those monster brow tines. Kind of reminds me of my big guy. Wasn't as clean of a kill as yours. It was raining and I had water in my rear sight and water on my glasses. It came down to me holding him down with a foot on his antler while I put my last 44 in his chest. It almost came down to a knife fight, but he's on my wall.

FryeVRCCDS0067,
Nice day, nice deer, good shooting. Wow can't get much better. I will be out here in Wisconsin Saturday and hopefully with the same results.
Good job,
Thedon

Thanks guys.

Jess, I take them to a processor unless it's a really small deer. Our local processors all charge a flat fee per deer. That makes it too expensive to have small deer processed.

Good deer, the brow tines are ridiculous  :o I have been hunting a 14 point this year, have seen him twice but always out of range. Saw him saturday morning at 140 yards through the woods. Found his left shed from last year and my buddy that is a state scorer scored it at 82 3/38. That puts him at close to 200 inches this year. Hope I get a chance at him soon. Been passing up several wall hangers just for my chance at him.

Both nice in my opinion, nice work.
And, that's 2 more that wont be causing another deer/motorcycle collision.
