My daughters used to joke about it with their friends. When asked if any of them had ADD, they replied "it wasn't allowed."  Seemed to work for them....all were/are successful in their own pursuits. I'm sure it's a real thing, but another reality I feel is the parenting in many cases. In most situations, youngsters will exercise whatever they feel they can get away with.

When my youngest was in first grade the school officials tried to tell me he needed medication because he was too hyper. I told them No! Next time at his Dr's appointment I inquired to the doctor about ADD and hyperactivity. He said stop giving him sugar in his food. so we changed a lot of the things we were feeding the kids. Stopped his so called hyperactivity. At the next parent/teacher conference his teacher made a remark about his "meds" working. I called her a lot of names and said things to her in my "outside" voice about her hyperactive stupidity.

In the late '60's the teachers at the elementary school we went to decided my younger brother was hyper and needed to be medicated. After the (insert favorite adverb here) quacks put him on a sedative and couldn't figure out why he was climbing the walls, my parents went to a real doctor that explained that yes, he is hyperactive and that sometimes means the body chemistry is reversed. That medical professional suggested a cup of coffee in the morning might do more good than meds. Long story made short, it worked, my brother is a successful businessman approaching retirement very comfortably.

P.S. my brother hates coffee in the morning now. Grin
